View Full Version : Meal time twice a day?

Now that Brutus isn't a young puppy anymore, I give him two meals a day. I read somewhere when he was a puppy that you should feed your lab twice a day rather than once, because they enjoy eating so much!

I was curious if anyone feeds their dog only once a day? and why.
More than twice a day? and why.

If you do feed your dog twice a day, why twice?

We always feed twice. Hard to say exactly why... I just think they'd get hungry if we fed everything all in one meal and they had to wait 24 hours for the next one. I know I wouldn't like that. As for why not three-- it just wouldn't work given our schedules, plus the dogs get treats during the day, so I doubt they're starving. Two meals a day has always been my preferred feeding method and is the standard the kennel at our clinic uses unless an owner requests otherwise.

Twice a day for ours. Once a day just seems like so long for them to wait, plus I wouldn't want them eating 2 meals worth at one time.

Twice a day for Puck--why shouldn't he eat more than once? It's more balanced. He sometimes gets a midday meal, but only he he's just gone swimming--I figure I'm always hungry after swimming, so I bet he is too!

Don't have labs but I feed my setter boys and my spaniel mix twice a day and I'll never forget because I'm always reminded that it is meal time! Actually Logan is now getting an extra meal and/or snacks mid-day because he needs to gain a little weight for the BOB ring.

Twice a day when you feed kibble - not because the dogs enjoy it but because smaller kibble meals help prevent bloating. A large kibble meal all at once may contribute to bloating.

We feed raw and only feed once a day because the dog needs to feel full (they don't eat much on raw). We always fed twice a day on kibble.

Twice a day here as well--- for all the reasons above

2x per day helps prevent bloat

I agree with this statement. If/when I fed kibble it was always 2 times a day and never less (to try to prevent bloat). Now that I feed raw I only feed once a day.

When we only had the one dog, Molly, I fed once a day. However, she seldom if ever ate it all at one setting. In fact, most of the time she would have some left at the end of the day. Now that we have two, we feed twice a day. Molly inhales her food and is staring at Ava to see if she drops any. I'm also having to cut back on what I give Molly...because she is cleaning her plate I've noticed she's put on a couple extra pounds.

Ours eat twice a day, because once a day feels like too long of a time between meals.....and they would probably drive me crazy begging for a meal!

3x a day because we got into the habit when Kelly was alive. She acted like she was STARVING 24/7 and this helped. We haven't changed for Bailey since it had been her schedule for so long.

Twice a day here...but Ritz is considering a move to Kattzoo's place because 3X a day sounds good to him!:thumb4:

We do twice a day too, with a midday snack of carrots or some other fun treat. Our first lab was on a once-a-day feeding schedule when we adopted her. Her dinner time gradually moved from 4:00pm to a noontime meal because she was always looking for her dinner.

I've always fed him twice a day, because it works with my schedule so well. I am out of the house from 7:30 to 5:30 (will be 6:30 in the fall), and while my mom does take him for a quick walk while I'm at work, I wouldn't ask her to feed him for me.

Same here. We feed raw once a day (used to feed raw twice a day, but recently switched to once a day and it works out much better).

3x a day currently, but trying to switch over to 2x. I'm curious what times you feed? I think it would be around 7am and then again at 7pm. This sound about right? Or do you think we could start to see some overnight poo accidents?

2x per day for life. 3x per day until about 6 months old.

I feed 2x a day - usually around 5:30/6:00 and 4:30/5:00pm ...later in the evening if we hit the dog park then he gets fed after we get home. I fed 2x as others have said I think he'd be hungry and looking for food anywhere.

We do twice a day because have a lot of pills to get down her on a daily basis at 12hr intervals...once a day wouldn't cut it. :)

I could have stuck to three times a day because I'm home for lunch MOST days. I switched to two times a day because weekends I didn't wanted to be hindered by "I have to be home at 12:30 to feed Lucy."

So i guess my next question would be: How do you phase from 3x to 2x a day? I would guess reduce the amount of food given on the 2nd feeding of the day gradually until you completely phase it out. Is this what those who used to feed 3x a day did?

That's what I did....over the course of about 5 days (one work week).

Buddy eats 1x/day per vet instruction.....he eats at 5pm.

Hunter eats 2x/day.....somewhere around 5am and then with Buddy at 5pm.

I feed Dakota twice a day. I know that I would definatly want to eat more than once a day!! I just make sure I measure his food so that he is not overeating.
