Well, this past Saturday (24-July), my brother's lab mix girl, Misty had to be put down. She lived a week and 2 days past her 15th birthday. My sister-in-law and I had picked her out of a litter way back in Aug. 1989 (a year before they even got married!). My brother had always wanted a dog of his own so for his birthday, we went and found Misty (we belonged to a litter that someone we both worked with had). He had wanted a boy dog, but she was SO cute, we just had to have her. She was so little when we brought her home, I could hold her in 2 hands behind my back. My brother didn't know what to expect (I had kept her hidden at my house until his birthday). That was the first time I ever saw him cry - when he saw this cute little puppy. Over the years, she grew into a beautiful girl. Very playful and ever so watchful of his kids (they are 9 and 12 years old now). She always played with all the dogs in their neighborhood (very friendly) and always had a wag or a kiss for whoever got near her. Even when she broke her leg and ripped a tendon (she was about 18 months old and back then it cost my brother about $700 to have it repaired), she didn't cry or anything, just tried not walking on her leg. After it was healed, you could never tell anything had ever happened to her, until arthritis set in during her later years.
It was time to let her go, as painful to us humans as it is. Her back legs stopped working for her a couple of days before. She had been in failing health for the past year, but she always rallied.
At least now, she is pain free, running and playing with my Reggie again (she used to tease him like crazy because they were about 7 years apart in age and he was very mellow when she was a rambunctious pup!).
Saturday, was the second time I saw my brother cry.
You will be missed Misty girl - you and your love of tennis balls!
RIP sweet girl!
