Hello, I am a new member. Just curious as to how much Pro Plan I need to be feeding my Lab? He is 13 months old and weighs about 75lbs. The bag says 3 and 3/4 cups. But he is still hungry. He looks like he is very healthy. I can only see his ribs when he stretches.

Any suggestions?

Hi,
I have been feeding Zeus (9 Month Cholate Lab) Pro Plan since he was born Zeus weight 82 pound field lab so he is a little on the slim side. Anway I feed him two cups in the moring one cup in the afternoon and two cups for dining. 5 cups aday. He looks great. If you are feeding your dog 3 3/4 cup now I would suggest that you increase his feeding by 1/2 cup see how he is doing. If it is fine and he is looking too skinny increase it by 1/2 cup again. It all depends on how skinny you dog looks. Some dog need alot of food orther dogs do not.

You will probably hear this a lot on this board, so I will be the first - change to something better than Pro Plan. Why?
Problem ingredients include Brewers rice (missing many of the nutrients contained in whole grain rice), Whole grain wheat (wheat is a known allergin), Poultry by-product meal (what animal? + by-products can vary drastically in quality), Corn gluten meal (an inexpensive by-product of human food processing), Beef tallow (what Pilgrams used to make candles with), Whole grain corn (corn just goes right through a dog), Corn bran (a cheap source of fiber to add bulk to poor quality dog foods), Fish meal (what kind of fish?), Menadione sodium bisulfite ( used as a feed supplement for livestock - unnecessary ingredient for healthy dogs).
Please don't feed your dog anything you can buy in a grocery store.

If your dog is doing well on Proplan I wouldn't rush out to switch brands. Each dog is individual. Of a couple of different brands we tried, Toby did the best on Proplan (yes there are better foods out there but FYI you can't buy it in a grocery store.)

If you decide to increase the amount of food you give, definately do it gradually. If your dogs looks good, you don't want to give too much food and possible make your dog overweight. Toby currently gets 1 3/4 cups Proplan twice a day. We were giving 2 cups twice a day but he was putting on too much weight. Toby will sometimes act like he is hungry, but I think that is just an act. :)

But he is still hungry.

Hi there and welcome :).

I make no bones about it, lol, I'm not a fan of Pro Plan or any other poor quality pet food.

The reason why he's still hungry is because he's not getting the nutrition his growing body needs out of the Pro Plan.

From the link, which one do you feed your pup?

I am feeding him the Pro Plan Large Breed Adult. If Pro Plan isn't a good food, what do you suggest?

Ok. I know it's old news that everyone has differing opinions on the food issue. I am currently feeding Pro Plan Chicken and Rice because it was RECOMMENDED by a good friend's vet. This good friend has a yellow lab, same age. We purchased Moose's food, etc. before we picked him up from the shelter. Around here, you cannot buy Pro Plan at the grocery store. You have to go to Petsmart or someplace like that and the nearest one is 1 hour away. So we are already going out of our way to get this food and it's not the cheap stuff either. I'm sure there are better brands out there, but if my dog likes it, that's fine with me. I hate switching brands around anyway. It makes them sick, diahrea, etc. Plus it was recommended. When we picked him up at the shelter, his coat was all dull and flaky. It is so shiny now! Moose does seem hungry, but I think I figured out what the problem is. We give 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups at night but Moose and I take 20-30 minute walks twice per day so I think maybe he's getting more exercise and not enough calories. I may have to increase it a cup.

Also, not everyone can afford some of the brands listed. If what they feed is vet recommended and the dog likes it, does well, etc, I don't see the problem. Many people would love to have just Kraft Mac N Cheese too, but when money's tight, a lot of people have to buy another brand.
