View Full Version : My New Foster Boy

Gunnergirl

'Leaner' as he is temporarily being called was picked up by Animal Control last week and released to me on a medical pass because of his condition. I picked him up today and off to the vet we went. He is of course positive for heartworms and has a terrible eye infection that I think may be causing a bit of vision loss for now. Our Vet bathed him for me (he literally had the smell of death-was awful!) and off we came to my house where he has eaten 3 small meals happily and is going poop and pee normally. Poor boy is weak and can only walk for so long before wanting to curl up in his crate which has a huge comfy comforter in it for him to lay on.
Despite his condition he is SO darn sweet as can be!! :)

awww - that poor baby!!!! It's a good thing that I will never meet people that do things like that to dogs (or any animal for that mattre) or I'd be sentenced to life in prison.

I'm glad he's got a great foster home with you. Can't wait to see pictures in a few weeks.

We send him hugs and kisses - and an extra milkbone!

Leaner boy is doing well on day 2 at my house. I think he's so thankful to have a warm, safe place to sleep at. He eats, goes potty and curls up back in his crate. Poor baby doesn't have much energy at all...hopefully in a week or so he'll show a bit of weight gain. I don't want to feed him too much at once so I'm sure it'll be a sloooooooow process. Will keep yall updated. :)

He is such a sweetie. The sight of him really hits home because his face reminds me of my boys. I'll bet he turns into a beautiful boy with some TLC. It must be very rewarding to foster this baby. I'm so happy he's in your care now.

His face reminds me of many dogs on this board. He truely has a gorgeous, HUGE block head...it just needs some more meat on it to fill out more! :)

 How could somebody do that??!!! I just don't understand.
Tammy, how old is he? I'm having visions of myself flying to Texas to scoop him up and bring him home to sunny Hawaii :p:

I can't wait until I can get back to the mainland and foster. Thank you for taking care of this sweet boy!

Gunnergirl
02-04-2004, 06:16 PM
We aren't exactly sure on his age at this point. We'll know more as he puts on weight and becomes more active I think.

Hawaii?? Well, only if I am able to fly him over and take a vacation all at the same time.

LessLethargic-heartworms are contracted from mosquitoes if a dog is not kept on heartworm prevention. Here in Texas, it's best to keep a dog on prevention year round because we always have mosquitoes...you may not have them up in Colorado! Dogs can be treated for heartworms however treatment is very hard on the dog as well...I prefer a holistic treatment but it takes alot longer than anything else.

Oh that poor baby. You are wonderful to take him in to foster. I hope he recovers quickly. I am not familiar with the holistic treatment of heartworms. Please tell me about it.

Well, I just looked at the new quarantine laws. :( Assuming that you have no record of rabies shots for this beautiful boy, it would take approx 7 months to get all the clearances needed to bring him here without going through quarantine. By then I may be back on the mainland! Well, I'm sure you will find him a wonderful loving forever home, but I've never had my heart strings tugged so hard by a rescue before. Bless you Tammy!

Good News! Leano-Leano has gained 5 pounds as of yesterday morning! WOOHOO! I knew he had definitely gained because his belly is finally pooching out a bit but I didn't think it'd be more than a few pounds.

The Holistic Heartworm treatment is made up of Black Walnut Hull and other things that my brain will not let me remember right now, LOL! Anyhow, there is a vet in Florida that sells the Holistic treatment-it's called paratox and is all natural. Given for a couple of months and the dog should be retested 6 months later. It doesn't always work the first time from what I understand however I used it on Oscar several years ago with perfect success. The plus is that the dog can remain active the entire time unlike the treament w/ Immiticide where they must remain crated for 4 weeks straight...and it's terrible for their systems.

Yay for Leaner! I'm sure he getting healthier by the minute in such good care. :)

Also good to know about the holistic heartworm treatment, I'll store that one away for future need. Thanks for taking care of such a sweet boy!

You all had the opportunity to meet me (well, meet my picture anyways) several weeks ago after I joined the STLRR program as a skinny sack of bones.

It's ME, Leaner Boy..A.K.A. Leanie, Leano, Leanio, Leano-Leano Bo Beano!!!

See what a little bit of food can do for a guy?? Little did my foster mom know that I am a ball player and enjoy trying to shove as many balls, kongs, sticks, etc...into my mouth at one time as possible. AND I like to steal the toys from my 2 foster sisters who think they are all that and a bag of chips. Yea, not anymore. Leanie is in town now girls so watch your toys!

I think mom maybe had a few panic attacks yesterday when she let me out to romp for the 1st time since I joined her (since I have so much more energy now!). I don't know WHAT the problem was-is it really a big deal that 3 Labs are chasing her around throwing objects at her for our enjoyment?? I don't think it's that hard to pick up 3 objects and throw them for 3 dogs all at one time...geez! (rolling eyes!)

At the rate I'm going, I'll be ready for heartworm treatment soon and then hopefully a new home w/ sisters that don't try to pounce on me all the time! :)

Eat your heart out ladies...I know I've got it goin' on!

Your Friend,
Leanio Leaner Boy

Thanks everyone! It REALLY has been so rewarding to see him out and about yesterday. I've only been walking him onleash outside to potty, then back in to his crate since he has had so little energy. When I let him out yesterday-he was like a totally new dog running around in the sunny weather. It was great for him!

I didn't realize what big change he has had already until I looked at the other photos again today-wow!

Great job Gunner. People like you there are just to few of.

I gotta start doing something. I talked to my wife a couple of years back about fosterig but she said she would never be able to give them up. That is just the way she is. Ohh I just figured it out what I can do. Maybe be a hitman for the pityful excuse of human debris like these owners.

Miss Lisa, Leaner is doing GREAT! He is having a few issues at the moment though that are keeping me awake all night! The female pit bull I took in 2 weeks ago is coming into heat and poor Leano is miserably whining alllllllll night long because of it! He's not well enough to be neutered yet and she wasn't going to be spayed until after heartworm treatment BUT the vet has allotted for her to go in Monday to be spayed-THANK GOODNESS!!

I'll get some new picts. this weekend of Leano Bo Beano! :)

With all that has been going on. How is Leaner?

Gunnergirl
03-08-2004, 09:21 AM
Leanie is doing okay although over the last few days I've come to the conclusion that his heartworms may be more severe than the vet originally thought. His weight keeps going up and down (although NOT down as far as he was of course!) and he has been coughing alot lately which is a tell-tale sign of severe heartworm infestation. I'm going today to get him somer herbal therapy things today in hopes that it will help him gain strenghth and eventually be strong enought to treat for heartworms.

Other than that, he's doing well! Morgan and I were TRYING to practice throwing for her softball yesterday and it was a bit difficult because Leanie was trying to steal the ball and would stand in front of us making it hard to play! :)

Gunnergirl - just started reading this thread today. It made me sick to think someone spent good money originally for this dog and then "abused it" so. You are a wonderful, caring person and I thank YOU for what you have done for Leaner.

The vet started Leanie on a low dose of predisone which he will take for a few weeks. It seems to have already helped out so much since last week because his appetite is back and his cough is a bit less. I also started him on about 9 different Herbs plus vitamins to help strengthen him up...so far so good. He is SUCH a doll face! :)

LOL! Oh, I know! Last time I brought up the subject (last Friday, maybe?), the dh said "We'll just have to see... it could be next month or it could be a year..."

Java is 1 YO today. We'll be out of town the next two weekends, but after that all bets are off. :p:

But, seriously, I don't know how I'd feel about bringing a dog from so far away when there are SO many here in NC that need homes...

Leaner really is a handsome boy, though. So is Big Red, can't leave him out!

Gunnergirl

Thanks everyone! :) It is so rewarding to see him actually SMILE now and he has the cutest bark/howl that he does when he wants attention or food, lol.

I'm thinking he's definitely a more senior boy as I think he is a bit senile at times. He'll put his toy on me and pick it up w/ a piece of my jeans/shorts/whatever in his mouth and won't give it back! OR occassionally he's latched onto my hand and I think he thought it was a toy because he'd hold on rather tight and not want to give it back either...but he's such a doll that I can't get him in trouble!

I'm so glad he's putting on weight again-I was really worried about him a week or 2 ago when he quit putting weight on and wasn't really eating. :(

Leanie Beans update (I think I have a new name for him w/ every post, lol)

Leanie Beans is doing well. I have finally come to the conclusion that he is an old man as we had originally thought. By his condition when we got him, it was hard to judge how old he may be. Leanie is a very sensitive crotchety old man...gotta love him! For some reason, he would rather sleep on the floor in my room than sleep in his crate-what is he thinking??:D

If anyone knows of anyone that would be interested in a beautiful and ever so loving sweet senior citizen, please send them my way.

Will get new picts this weekend for you all :)

I get tears in my eyes when I look at the picture. How terrible to see a dog in this shape. I had never heard about a holistic treatment for heartworm. I have heard that the general treatment brings a dog close to death.

I sure hope this one does well, he looks as if he has suffered so much, but you can see the forgiveness in his eyes.

Please keep us up to date on his progress - we'll be pulling for him here.
