We adopted our Velvet from Lab Rescue.
When we first saw her, she was a tall, skinny, purebred Lab. She had come from a home where she was tied to a tree, broke free & wound up in a kill shelter. The family scraped together the $65 to get her out of the shelter, then gave her up to Lab Rescue.
Who would have thought that this throw-away dog would one day receive the NJ Veterinary Award for her service in New York after 9/11!
She walked with me through the streets of NY in the early days after Sept 11th, over sand bags, past National Guard with rifles drawn, Black Hawks flying overhead, into the Family Assistance Center where they were processing the families of the victims of the WTC.
We met celebrities, families, even the Mayor of NY. Working sometimes 12 hours a day, she would walk through the crowds of people there, giving comfort, a pet here, a smile there, and tears, lots of tears.
And to think, that for the lack of $65, she could have been put to sleep.
I applaud anyone who has the courage to adopt a Lab from rescue...sometimes, you get much more than you're looking for
