View Full Version : NB D&P - Neo is turning up his nose at it now
We have been feeding Neo the Duck and Potato pretty much since we got him. Over the past week, he comes running when I tell them it is time to eat and stands there wagging his whole back end while I am getting it ready. However, when I put the bowl in front of him, he sniffs it and looks up at me as if he is saying, "But I don't like this stuff. Give me something else." If I spread it out on the floor he will eat it slowly. I have also tried letting it soak in water for five minutes. I finally bought a few cans of the D&P and have been mixing it in with the kibble and he gobbles it all down.
Do you think that he just doesn't like the food? Should I try to find him something else? Should I just elimate the kibble and go for the canned food alone? Is there anything special that I should do if he is eating just canned food?
Note: He has been acting normal - with normal stools. The food was out of two different bags so I can't say that it is due to a difference in bags.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
TrackingHunter 08-29-2005, 08:43 PM Smack him on the butt and tell him dogs are starving in Africa.
Seriously, I don't have a whole lot of advice. Hunter has been on a food RAMPAGE ever since I put him on the D&P.
For those of you who don't realize, that first line was a joke. :D
lovefor4labs 08-29-2005, 08:45 PM You could try soaking it, or heating it up.Spoiled puppy!I see you already soak it. Sweetpea will not eat hers without the canned either.

You mean to heat up the kibble itself? And yes Neo is dang spoiled!
lovefor4labs 08-29-2005, 09:01 PM Yep. Soak it with a bit of water, and heat it up. Sweetpea and Mags won't eat the canned if it is not warm. They are not spoiled :)
Heather 08-29-2005, 11:39 PM I just had a difference in bag issue- Annie got diarhea the day I changed to the new bag. I guess it could have been coincidence but I still sent an email to them anyway. I know that my kids are typically hungry when they get their kibble. I do mix it with warm water and usually put in a tbsp of yogurt, cottage cheese or D&P canned. They seem to gobble it up that way!
:) I think its perfectly normal that your dogs are spoiled! Would NOT want it any other way! ;)
Jenna 08-30-2005, 05:29 PM I have also yet to figure out why Jackson took a instant dislike to his duck and potato, I am resorting to adding things and stirring it up to get him to eat it, but the little bugger knows how to sift through the food to get to the good stuff..
iLUVmySH 08-31-2005, 04:49 PM Bella won't eat it.. i have to play with her like parents do with babies to get her to eat it... she would barely even eat 1 cup in the mornings (if anything at all) and OCCASIONALLY she'll eat most of it her second feeding time at night... hmmm...
Purrygirl 09-06-2005, 01:55 PM The food was from two different bags? Did you mix the bags together? How are you storing it? If it has been in too much warm weather, maybe it went stale? Sometimes in the summer food gets stale quicker, so my guess would be that you need to try a fresh bag and keep it in the fridge or somewhere cool and see if that works. I keep my lab's food in the fridge in the summer, as it can get hot here, and foods that are naturally preserved might not hold up to the heat.

The food was from two different bags and we didn't mix the bags together. We store it in an airtight container inside. Somehow I don't see putting a 20 or 40 lb bag of food in my fridge :D I am thinking that there was something "off" with that bag. We got another new bag yesterday and he ate that up without a problem.
Heather 09-07-2005, 10:34 AM I wrote Natural Balance and asked them about their ingredients after the Annie episode. Not only did they send coupons but they sent FEDEX, a 30# replacement bag! I was FLOORED!
Awesome customer service, that's for sure!
jcatkc 09-07-2005, 08:37 PM Yes, while it seems that Natural Balance has great customer service - they seem to just send coupons, instead of replying to valid and urgent questions about their waivering quality control.
There have been several threads started on this board in the past couple of months about the fact that one day a dog is loving the food, then a new bag is purchased and the dog either quits eating it or vomiting it up.
Several have emailed or called the company only to get the run-around, but they do send out those coupons (sounds like hush-money!!!).
No amount of coupons or the sending of replacement bags should make up for their very uneven quality control.
ZacksPa 09-08-2005, 02:45 AM Since you brought it up, I had a can of NB that made an "oil can" noise when pressed. I have never had a can do this before, so I contacted NB. I also inquired about the "differences" in kibble that some owners are experiencing of late. The rep I spoke with(Jennifer) told me the can was bad. Probably a production flaw. She was adamant that the difference in kibble was caused by variations in potatoes, which doesn't explain why dogs should get sick. I persisted and she stuck to her guns. She did ask what chat board I got my info from. Good news though, she is sending me coupons for free canned dog food!!

Other members in the past were told that differences they were seeing in the kibble from one bag to another was due to the oil sprayer breaking down at the dog food plant.
