View Full Version : NC members- let's get a date/location set!
Bella & Mari 03-19-2008, 05:13 PM Hi all!
I know you all tried this a few months ago...so let's try again because I am out here now and who doesn't want to meet me? :p: Does anyone know of a great place/park/dog friendly area in NC to hold a get together?
How far is everyone willing to drive?
Are there dates in the next couple months that DON'T work for people?
I am willing to work to get this put together if we decide on details. :D
Luc-Luca-Lucas 03-19-2008, 08:20 PM I'd love to do another Labfest some day. I'm slightly traumatized over breaking down on the way home from our last one though. :floor :floor And now, no DH here to take over the situation. :D But definitely, if it's not too far I'd love to join in! I know nowhere in NC though, sorry. Hopefully someone will have ideas! The month of May is out for me as David "should" be here for R&R (too early!) but other than that, I'm pretty much free for the next 14 months.
Labradornut 03-19-2008, 08:53 PM There are 4 dog parks around Charlotte. Right now they are for members only, but July 1st, they will be free to the public. I know that's a little over 3 months from now, but we could start planning for then unless someone knows of another place to have one.
At the last one here, there were 17 dogs, so we need a big place.
thndrkttn 03-20-2008, 05:21 AM Ditto what Becky said. I am a member to the Mecklenburg Parks but there is a stiff penalty for bringing non-members in. But as Becky said, come July, they are open to everyone. The Ramsey Creek Park is really nice. It has bathrooms and 3 picnic pavillions right next to the dog area. Nowhere to swim though.
Bella & Mari 03-20-2008, 05:57 PM Becky what about that hydro therapy place? I wonder if she would rent it out for a nominal fee...Not that I know for sure that any of you want to contribute. lol
Luc-Luca-Lucas 03-20-2008, 07:18 PM My only problem with the summer is that I do not do well in the heat. :floor :floor I tend to stay inside 90% of the summer months because being out makes me feel sick. :( Damn humidity!

What hydro therapy place are you talking about?
Bella & Mari 03-21-2008, 07:31 AM What hydro therapy place are you talking about?
You'd sent me a link awhile back about a lady who started a business for dogs who need hydrotherapy...or I'm crazy. :floorThat is probably more likely.
Amber do you know of any parks we can go to that don't require the membership. I am fine driving a little ways...

I have no idea? There aren't any around here that I'm aware of, sorry.
But, you guys are always welcome to visit us! :D We have a decent sized backyard.
CaraBella 03-23-2008, 01:48 PM Keep me posted on when & where....I am about 4.5 hours (give or take ...74 is two lanes in some places with 35mph speed limit) from Charlotte so would have to figure something out....thinking it would be too much for a day trip.
ZenCat 03-23-2008, 02:01 PM It would be AWESOME if we could find a place where the dogs could swim. Grip hasn't been swimming for nearly two years, since we left CT. But I think we've been trying to solve the Great Piedmont Dog Swimming Dilemma for awhile now with no luck ;)
I'm in provided its fairly local. I hate to drive on highways anymore, but I'd love to come.
Bella & Mari 03-23-2008, 04:45 PM Ok so this may be a LONG shot but I had looked at this guy for training and was thinking maybe I would ask him if he would be willing to rent it our for a small fee.
http://www.oakridge-kennels.com/facilities.htm
ZenCat 03-24-2008, 06:44 AM Looks like a nice place!
gadgetgrrll 04-02-2008, 08:49 AM We'd be interested. Looking at the link you provided, it looks like it'd be a 2 1/2 hour drive for us, but worth it.
Bella & Mari 04-02-2008, 09:57 AM That guy won't write me back....grrrrrrr. Any other ideas?
gadgetgrrll 04-02-2008, 10:02 AM There's a place near Raleigh that has an area with a pond, that might be an option. Never been there, but I've heard about it.
http://www.dogtrainingraleighnc.net/doggieswimmingpond.htm
rubysmom 04-03-2008, 10:41 AM That place sounds awesome!! I'm in.
seniorpup 04-06-2008, 08:16 AM Hi ... I'm new to the forum but would love to get together - just let me know when and where...
Joanne, Sam and Duncan
Bella & Mari 04-06-2008, 08:45 AM That looks nice! I will work on that place this weekend to see what we can do. What dates work?
gadgetgrrll 04-06-2008, 02:46 PM We're pretty much open through most of April and May.
ZenCat 04-06-2008, 02:50 PM The only confirmed time that would be bad for me is June 16-30th when my inlaws will be here from Scotland for their annual visit.
That place looks perfect!!! I'm estimating its about an hour from us, which is fine.
ZenCat 04-06-2008, 04:59 PM Just found out that it's actually 3 hours each way - not 1 - which would make it hard for me (I'm not comfortable with long distance driving anymore and Grip is a spaz in the car)
:(
But it still looks like an awesome place, even if we can't attend.
rubysmom 04-07-2008, 09:06 AM Sweeeeet!!! It's probably 20-25 minutes from me!:thumb4: I'm pretty much wide open.
Luc-Luca-Lucas 04-07-2008, 10:44 AM I just mapquested it to be about 1-1 1/2 hours away which isn't too bad at all.
rubysmom 04-07-2008, 01:30 PM ZenCat, sorry for my post................I must have missed your post because when you said you were about 3 hours away my post below it said
"Sweeeeet!!! It's probably 20-25 minutes from me!:thumb4: I'm pretty much wide open."
I wrote that because it would be so close to me, not because you can't come.:o: (lol) Maybe we can find a place more central to everyone if this seems off the beaten path to some.
Bella & Mari 04-07-2008, 02:41 PM It is about 3 hours for me too...and will be for anyone coming from the Charlotte area. Hmmmmmmm
rubysmom 04-07-2008, 05:30 PM I think I need to get a map out and also figure out what area everyone live in. There's got to be a reasonable distance that is centrally located to everyone. Since I'm kind of new to Chapel Hill, I'm not sure where in relation to that everyone lives.
ETA: I agree a three hour drive would just be too much.
CaraBella 04-07-2008, 06:00 PM :cry2: :cry2: I live far away from everyone.....:( :( Charlotte is 4+ hours, Raleigh is 2+....but I think most board peeps are closer to Charlotte
Luc-Luca-Lucas 04-07-2008, 07:39 PM :cry2: :cry2: I live far away from everyone.....:( :( Charlotte is 4+ hours, Raleigh is 2+....but I think most board peeps are closer to Charlotte
Charlotte is about 3 hours from me but quite a few made it last time, so I assume Charlotte is good for most. We went last time but I don't plan on driving that far this time. :p:
gadgetgrrll 04-08-2008, 08:00 AM Maybe we can find something in the Winston-Salem or Greensboro area? That seems to be right in the middle for a lot of folks.
Bella & Mari 04-08-2008, 09:08 AM Maybe we can find something in the Winston-Salem or Greensboro area? That seems to be right in the middle for a lot of folks.
I was looking at that last night too. I can't find any with swimming but perhaps someone else knows of something. Or we can erase the swimming plan and just go to a regular dog park in Winston-Salem or Greensboro.
Here's the Greensboro park: http://www.gsobarkpark.com/
Here are the two in W-S:
http://www.co.forsyth.nc.us/Parks/horizons_dogpark.aspx
And one in Washington Park in W-S that I can't find a link for.
gadgetgrrll 04-08-2008, 09:31 AM These look like some great options. I'd be fine erasing the swimming idea if it gets more people from around the state there. :)

I agree! :thumb4:
Amber and Zen...would these work for you?
Luc-Luca-Lucas 04-08-2008, 10:17 AM Greensboro and Winstom-Salem are 2.5-3 hours away from me. I think it's at least another hour and a half longer for Steph too, as she's in Wilmington. I don't know that there is a place central enough to accomodate everyone though?
Bella & Mari 04-08-2008, 10:19 AM What about the NC/SC border? Since I just moved here, I am no help at all.
Luc-Luca-Lucas 04-08-2008, 10:37 AM I've lived here two years and I'm no help either. :floor I haven't ventured outside of Fayetteville much.
Labradornut 04-08-2008, 12:14 PM Maybe we can find something in the Winston-Salem or Greensboro area? That seems to be right in the middle for a lot of folks.
And here's where Teresa (Decker's Mom) is supposed to post that she would love to host a lab fest because she lives in that area!
:shout: OH TERESA!!!!
Bella & Mari 04-08-2008, 12:36 PM Ohhhhhh Becky...I love you for that idea but Teresa may hate you. lol

Brat! Don't make me feel bad. :p: You know I'd want you there. (Plus you weren't one of the ones who said you couldn't drive that far- or maybe I just ignored you when you said that because I knew you'd come!)lol
I would let people stay here but my 1200 sq foot condo is already kind of small with my two dogs, my brother and me.

:floor No worries...just told Trey ..he said he was sure his Dad & SM would be ok with it...but I would probably have to feed the girls outside & be ready for ?????:floor :floor
Bella & Mari 04-08-2008, 07:44 PM Didn't think of me either :frown:

;) I was picking you up on my way and stuffing harley, Moose and Porter in the back with Bella and Mari. Can't you picture it now. Us in the front seat and 5 dogs in the back of my Honda Accord.
Seriously though woman! You know I want you there too.
From now on, I am NEVER mentioning names. :p:
CaraBella 04-08-2008, 07:46 PM Didn't think of me either :frown:

I didn't think you were that far away
Do we know where everyone is?
I am in Wilmington ....the end of I40 ...far away from everything
Bella & Mari 04-08-2008, 07:52 PM I think Zen, Becky and I are really close. A couple in Raleigh area and then you and Amber...
And Ash even further.
Ok I just said I wasn't going to name names again and there I went and did it again. lol

kallie 04-09-2008, 12:52 PM When are you guys doing this? Heck I'm 10 hours away, but DH and I could take a few days and drive up..I'm sure they have pet friendly hotels around:)

:D I'm here!! :D
I'm near Greensboro. Let me read up on this thread and see what's happening...:D
I'll be back....
Decker's Mom 04-09-2008, 08:12 PM And here's where Teresa (Decker's Mom) is supposed to post that she would love to host a lab fest because she lives in that area!

I'm here Becky!! ( I love Becky!!:D)
Ohhhhhh Becky...I love you for that idea but Teresa may hate you. lol
Nope, Becky has a very special place in my heart....:D Ok...let me see what I can do here...I have "some" land, at least enough for a "small" labfest at my home. The neighbors behind us own a nice 3 acrea pond/lake where we take my boys swimming every now and then. I have thought about asking them if we could use the pond and acreage for a labfest. I am pretty sure they would not mind, but I am sure they would not allow drinking on their property. Let me see what I can work out. We are suppose to have a new patio put in this spring. I would love to host a labfest here, so, don't count it out!!:D
CaraBella 04-09-2008, 08:13 PM
Decker's Mom 04-09-2008, 08:16 PM
Does that mean you would make the drive Steph??:D

less than 30 minutes from my house!:D
kallie 04-10-2008, 07:51 AM That would be awesome!! :thumb4: We don't have a date set. What WOULDN'T work for you?
I'll let you know after this weekend, as my sister is going out of town for 2 weeks in June, and I have to watch her dog, and she would be the one watching my other 3 dogs when we are gone:) My DH works two weeks on, and one week off, so naturally it will have to be the week he is off:)
I say 10 hours, as that was a guess..LOL What city in NC, as I will map it and see how long?
Bella & Mari 04-10-2008, 08:08 AM Yayyyyy Teresa! I know you love Becky :) Who doesn't?
Jen, if Teresa hosts (which would be awesome and great) it would be Greensboro, NC.

YIKES I just mapped it, it is almost 12 hours.. This may take ALOT of convincing on my part to bribe my DH to drive this..:(
Decker's Mom 04-11-2008, 04:46 AM Ok, be paitent with me...I am working on some things...maybe sometime later in June or July? I'm having some work done on the backyard and that has to be completed before we have a certain date set. I know people need time to get arrangements made to come also.
ZenCat 04-13-2008, 08:49 AM Standing by for further developments :)
HBDunn 04-13-2008, 02:34 PM I am moving to Seagrove, NC on July 1st (so close to Greensboro!) and would love information as well if it is after we move.
rubysmom 04-14-2008, 01:24 PM Wow! This is awesome. Greensboro is only about 45 minutes away from me!:thumb4:
KileyEmmie 04-14-2008, 02:34 PM I live about 30 minutes east of Greensboro near Burlington. I am a newbie to this board other than lurking for the past year or so, but am also very interested in attending.
Just an FYI, I am a member of another lab website and we have a LabFest in Patrick, SC on the last Saturday in September. I mentioned this so hopefully this date will not run close to the other and people can attend both. That's my plan.
Decker's Mom 04-14-2008, 05:35 PM Ok, trees were trimmed today...Now, if we can just get the "patio" man to get here and work on the patio we will be another step closer.
Keep checking back everyone!:D
CaraBella 04-14-2008, 05:37 PM   So excited ...Thanks Teresa.
I think I found a place down here we can do it if we ever need to :D

Yayyyy...I'll definitely keep checking Teresa. :thumb4:
And Donna (KileyEmmie for those that don't know her) I'll make sure this board gets their ear full of the SC lab fest.
HBDunn 04-18-2008, 07:06 AM I cant go :( but thought I would pass the info http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/Park+and+Rec/Parks/Dog+Parks/Bark+in+the+Park.htm
Tarheel 04-19-2008, 09:54 PM I am moving to Seagrove, NC on July 1st (so close to Greensboro!) and would love information as well if it is after we move.
Okay, I joined this board, although I do lurk from time to time, just to ask what in the world brings you to Seagrove? I was born and raised there as were my parents and grandparents. I know that not many people relocate to Seagrove, so I was dying to know. Even more specifically, where will you be living? My parents and sister actually live in Whynot. By the way, Meg will tell you I'm not crazy. She knows me from mostlylabs.
rubysmom 04-20-2008, 05:08 AM Just checkin'! I'd love to meet everyone. Alot of you are close to me!
Decker's Mom 04-20-2008, 06:21 AM I am hoping that the Patio man will be coming this Friday to put in our new patio! If anyone wants to give me some "good dates" for them, maybe we can see which dates are good for everyone.
May would be nice, probably not as hot as June or July would be.
Bella & Mari 04-20-2008, 08:37 AM I agree May would be much better temp wise if you are ready by then Teresa. :)
If we push to June or July I am open except for the weekend after July 4th. Which I assume wouldn't work for many people anyway.
Decker's Mom 04-21-2008, 12:04 PM Well, if the patio man gets on the ball and puts the patio in soon, (like next week) we can shoot for later in May. If not, we may have to wait until June.
I'll continue to keep everyone posted.
clear 04-21-2008, 09:47 PM Hi i am new here, but i have a yellow lab little over a year old named Ben, we live a little east of raleigh. I would love to come to a meet! but Charlotte is way to far.

A couple of reasons I am moving to the area. I was accepted to the Zoo & Aquarium science program in Lexington. The reason for Seagrove though is that all of my bf's family lives there. He was born and raised in that area..I believe the name of the road is Erect??

Honestly I laughed a lot when she said no one relocates to Seagrove :) I have thought the same thing over and over :p: I keep telling myself I can go east and see ocean and go west and see mountains I am in the perfect spot!! Well it does help me sleep better anyway.

OMG, that is so funny. I know exactly where Erect is, not to mention, I'm surprised no one had a comment for that one. Most people laugh hysterically when I name that town. Whynot, where I lived, is actually between Seagrove and Erect. Congrats on getting accepted to the Zoo program. I had no idea that even existed. Our zoo is pretty well known. I always have to reference my hometown as "10 minutes south of the zoo on highway 220". I must know your boyfriend, as everyone from Seagrove knows everyone else (and their business :) I guess I shouldn't have said no one relocates to Seagrove, but it's not that close to any large cities, so not alot of people come for business. I thought maybe you were getting into pottery or something. You are completely right about having the beach and the mountains. That is one of my favorite things about living in NC. You'll have to keep me posted on your progress. Honestly, you can't live more than 5-7 minutes from my parents and my sister once you get moved. It's such a small world.
Tarheel 04-22-2008, 05:05 PM Don't let her fool you...I don't know that crazy lady Tarheel. ;)
Hey you, you better watch it. You are close enough for me to come and get now. I can't believe we still haven't worked out a weekend to get together. We are slack, huh?

His family is the Dunns/Kennedy's..I am sure you do know them I think they have lived their forever. I think he has an aunt into pottery there, I have heard its big business in that area. I am so excited about the zoo program it seems to be taking forever until its time to go. I am still looking for a rental there that accepts pets seems to be as hard to find that as it is here. We plan on building on his families land but need to rent until then..we can stay with his family but I am not sure I am ready for that ;) It is a small world..let me know if your in that area this summer and our dogs can play!

I do know some Dunns that are potters. The ones I know have triplet boys. I grew up in church with Dunns and Kennedys. I have no advice on renting as everyone there has just lived there all of their lives. There is a house for sale on my parents' road. I wonder if she would be interested in renting for a while. I know her very well, if you exhaust all of your options. I know there aren't any apartments within 20 minutes of Seagrove, are there? Of course I'll be home. I go home once a month and take my choco lab. My sister and BIL also have two choco labs. We have several ponds on our property. Maybe you can pm me and let me know more later. I can't pm yet, I think I have to get one more post. I only joined to talk with you. This board is just too big for me. I get lost :)
Tarheel 04-29-2008, 04:35 PM Any updates on dates or locations?
Decker's Mom 05-02-2008, 06:48 PM Any updates on dates or locations?
I am currently working hard to have the labfest at my home. If the weather continues to cooperate and I get my patio put in next week, I will start a thread and check everyone's dates and see which weekend looks good to everyone. Reidsville, NC will be the location. Keep checking in!:thumb4:
clear 05-04-2008, 08:44 PM reidsville is a little to far for us to drive with gas being $3.60! i hope everyone has fun tho!
Avery&Todd 05-07-2008, 07:20 AM Ive been posting on this board for a month or so, but mainly on the Fire Hydrant, and was thinking "why dont they have a Lab Fest in NC"??
and WAM!
there IS one, I just needed to look!!
WAHOOO!!!
Count me in...
(if you dont mind a party crasher...:brow:)
Boxorox 05-14-2008, 09:52 PM I'm new to the board, but definitely interested in a meetup.
If I'm not on my way to the beach I'm on my way to the mountains so anywhere in NC is fine w/ me.
I'm in Hope Mills, NC.
Decker's Mom 05-16-2008, 04:12 AM :shout:Ok NC peeps! Will be finishing up the firepit this weekend!! ONCE I KNOW everything is done, I'll be posting a thread to see what weekend works best for everyone. So far, it looks like it would have to be later in June. Possibly towards the end of the month, maybe June 26.
CaraBella 05-16-2008, 04:55 AM June 26...isn't that a Thursday  or am I looking at the wrong month on the calendar. Sorry...I can only do weekends :(
Avery&Todd 05-16-2008, 05:21 AM June 26th is definately a Thursday...and as much fun as it would be to skip work, I would have to pass on a Thursday....:D
and now that Im thinking with a clear head, Im not sure if I can do the end of June - my sister is expecting her first baby June 28th, and Im supposed to be there to "catch it" or at least watch... Her DH is not one for "bloody/gooey" things, and a birth can be a little of both...:o:
BUT, dont count me out just yet b/c there is nothing saying that she wont go early, and then that frees up that weekend - my 2 DS were both early - 5 1/2 weeks and 3 1/2 weeks, so she could be an "overachiever" and pop her DD out early too..
Labradornut 05-16-2008, 05:30 AM I'm sure Teresa means for this to be on a Saturday - probably June 28
Luc-Luca-Lucas 05-16-2008, 05:45 AM I'll keep watching this thread to see how it goes. I'm pretty much free until next April/May aside from work, which I can make my own days and hours. :p: My only issue is driving alone but we'll see how I'm feeling closer to it!
ZenCat 05-16-2008, 05:56 AM Sadly, I won't be able to make the 28th as my in-laws will still be here from Scotland :(
If that date works for the majority though, please don't worry about me because I often can't commit until the last minute anyway due to Tom's work schedule (and we still only have one car)
Decker's Mom 05-16-2008, 06:02 AM I'm sure Teresa means for this to be on a Saturday - probably June 28
I did, I meant Saturday, my bad. I see where Lisa can't come on the 28th.:( I know the weekend of the 14th is out. Maybe June 21??
thndrkttn 05-16-2008, 06:47 AM June 21 works for me! I can't make it the 28th (DH's friends are in town and as much as I am not terribly fond of them, I still have to be there.)
 YAY for the NC labfest!
Bella & Mari 05-16-2008, 07:52 AM June 21st works for me...the 28th does too but I see it doesn't for a few people already. Yayyyyyy!

CaraBella 05-16-2008, 07:56 AM I think the 21st will work for me...will be a lot of driving since I will all ready be there for work the 18th-20th. I would not be driving home until the afternoon of the 20th, could not drive back until the 21st.....what time of day?
Plus need to make sure we can stay with FIL, once we have a definite date.
Bella & Mari 05-16-2008, 07:59 AM Steph, if you want, the dogs may be able to stay here while you work so you wouldn't have to drive back and forth!

You practically live next door! If you don't want to drive alone you can drive w/ my family and I... or we can decide on a time and you can follow us in your own vehicle.
My wife knows how it feels to be left behind during a deployment. I was a paratrooper in the 82nd ABN for 6 years.
The 21st works for me!
Bella & Mari 05-16-2008, 09:30 AM Yayyyyy another Bella! Is she a drama queen like my Bella? lol
And what a great offer for Amber! That is very nice of you. :)
Avery&Todd 05-16-2008, 11:20 AM I have penciled in the 21st on my calendar...

She is a drama queen!
I've heard the weirdest moans and groans come out of her. I didn't realize a dog could make those types of sounds...
CaraBella 05-16-2008, 03:31 PM 3 Bella's for the Labfest :floor :floor :floor or are there more
CaraBella 05-17-2008, 08:35 AM Steph, if you want, the dogs may be able to stay here while you work so you wouldn't have to drive back and forth!
