View Full Version : When to Neuter Puppy

I have a VERY dominate male puppy named Draco Terrifficus (Terrible Dragon) who we call Draco. He was born 1-12-03. He is a very loving dog who tries so very hard to please my wife and me that we just love him to death. That said, he does have some discipline issues that we are dealing with. Namely, he is getting more aggressive with my wife, i.e. growling, mounting, snapping at her, etc. We are in puppy kindergarten and it is helping a lot. The trainer(s), who are very knowledgable breeders, say that getting him "fixed" will help with a lot of the issues we are dealing with. Our vet says that she will get "fix" him after he is done with his shots. That will be next week. We could schedule to have him neutered anytime after that. So finally, the question is "is a four month old male, very large puppy, over thirty pounds but skinny looking, too young to be neutered?" Thanks for any comments!

My vet says that they can really be neutered anytime (after shots) but that the older the are, the less chance of problems with the anesthesia. My pup is scheduled to go in June which will be when he is 5 months.

Its generally done around 6 months of age. All of my cats and dogs have been done right around 5-6 months.

I do know of a few people who wait to spay/nueter until the dog is more close to a year old because it supposedly help them grow into a better looking dog or something. I don't know how true this is, but I can see how getting them nuetered later may help them grow slightly better. I'm still skeptical about waiting to have a dog fixed being I've seen number of animals fixed early - some times way earlier than 5-6 months of age and they seem to grow into one fine looking animal but then again, I haven't been able to compare one animal (of the same breeding) that was fixed at 5-6 months then another that was fixed closer to a year of age.

Our dog jack was born 1/23 so just a little younger than Draco- and they said that after both his testicles drop they can be neutered. his third set of shots are during may and thus we scheduled his appt for the end of may- so I think that you are fine- they typically say 4-6 months is when you should do it, but our vet said it was fine- so I think that as long as your vet says he has the go ahead then you should be fine.

Rescue groups and shelters around here do Pediatric spay/neuters on puppy's that are atleast 3 pounds.

My personal dogs have all been spayed/neutered after a year old.

This article isn't about neutering but I do agree sounds like he can do to loose the hormones before they actually kick in ;) I have found this article very informative in regards to the stronger alpha dogs and has good advice to establish rules and orders. http://www.sonic.net/~cdlcruz/GPCC/library/alpha.htm

My vet also recommended 6 months before neutering. Some days, when Jake is bouncing off the walls, I think that I am going to be there on his 6 month birthday. Then other days when he is calmer I think 'How can I do this to him'? Anyways just thought I would throw in my two cents.
