Howdy everyone. We visited this board several time and decided to join since we're getting a yellow lab pup in 4 weeks. We decided to name it "Molly". She's 4 weeks old right now and still with the breeder but I paid the deposit to hold her for us. :-) We are very excited to get her when she's ready! We saw her today and she's absolutely adorable and tiny! there is litter of 8 pups, 3 chocolate, 3 yellows and 2 blacks. We fell in love with yellow female since her face is so cute and cuddly when we held her. :-)

Welcome aboard! I remember waiting the last few weeks to pick up the puppy and bring her home- seemed to take forever.

Good luck with your pup!

Hey! Thanks about giving us a warm welcome to this chatroom! I can't wait to get Molly. I was down today and just wanted to hold Molly in my arms to get some puppy love from her but she can't be with us until 3 weeks... I think the wait is worth it but it gets harder because I just want to bring her home to us. Lindsay:D

Hello! Puppy stage is going to be rough but I have one question.. what is the best way to potty train a lab because many people told me not to use newspaper and I know that many of you had 3 or 4 labs all your life or even more.. I appreicate the priceless ad heheh! Any ideas or new new things that we need to learn to train Molly would be tons of help for us. Thanks again :o)

Oh Potty Training! :o Well Roxy (almost 8 weeks) is still working on it... we don’t use newspaper cause we don’t want her to think its OK to "go" in the house... ? We take her out, what feels like every 5 minutes  ACCIDENTS: The best advice I can give you is don’t let it happen! Or well try not to let it happen, if we catch Roxy in the act we tell her NO and immediately and take her out to "her spot" (I know she probably don’t have to go anymore but she needs to know where is OK to go.) But thats just us perhaps some of the Lab Pro's on here can give you some better advice. :D

PS: If you find out the best way to train a Lab let me know, we have lots to learn to ;)

We just got our puppy a week and a half ago and we let him sleep with us from day one. We only let him in the kitchen during the daytime hours unless he is laying down with me for a much needed nap! I am a stay at home mom and we found that limiting his space and keeping him with us has worked great. We have not had any accidents in the house at all and he is starting to scratch at the kichen door and cry when he needs to potty. In the middle of the night he gets in my face and cries and kisses me as if to say....Hurrrrryyy!! lol. He is doing great being with me 24-7. If you work and no one can be with her I would use a crate and have someone come in during the day every couple hours to let her out. When you are home let her be withu but limit herspace To much room can lead to bad habits if they are not caught and corrected. Ranger isa dreamand we love him so much. Congrats on your new puppy. Labs love their people so let her be as much a part of everything you do as possible and you will have a wonderful and well behave baby girl!!
All the best to your family and baby Molly!

Also remember that going outside is to do potty and come back in. Remember to praise her up and down! To much time outside and they don't get the point. We let Rangergo to one part of th yard for play time and one for potty time. That way he knows that he has a 'job" to do. I spend less ime trying to coax him. He knows potty nd back inthe house. Also use the words go potty. when she does go tell her good girl go potty! Let her know you are proud of her. Using the wrds go potty will also make it easier for yu. She will learnto go on key. We found this to be useful whenwe would go on long car rides.
sorry for the mistakes in this my keyboard is giving me truble and when i go back to correct it it erases what I wrote. I hop this info helps.
Again congrats!!

Get some rest before you bring Molly home!!!! I haven't slept past 5:30 since Jackson came home 6 weeks ago. Every day I am thankful that he is in our family, but I do miss having my lazy Sunday mornings a little bit.

My experience with housetraining was so much easier than I had anticipated. Jackson had a few accidents, but those were due to us no paying close enough attention - we simply missed his signals to us that it was time to go outside. From the get go we brought him out immediately after eating, and then every other hour or so. Also, as soon as he began to sniff around we would bring him to his designated spot and say "do your stuff". It really only took about two weeks for him to understand that outside was the place to take care of business. Now, at 13 weeks, Jackson goes to the door and sits when he needs to go out.

Good luck with Molly and send pictures as soon as you can!!!

Wow. Sounds like very easy to housebreak a lab. I hope it won't be any problem since Linds and I work 40 hours a week. 6:30am to 3:00pm. But we plan to take an hour lunch everyday to come home to take Molly out and to feed her. Plus, in mornings when we get up at 5am (that's our usual wake up time), Whenever Linds take shower first, I'd take Molly out and feed her, whenever I take shower first, she'll take care of Molly. During day while we're at work, we have this big crate to put Molly in. That shouldn't be a problem (I hope!). At night, we'll be putting Molly in smaller cage to prevent her to have room to pee or poop. The smaller cage'll be in bedroom with us so she could hear us and won't be scared. During days, bigger crate'll be in kitchen. you guys, let me know if it's effective plan or not. Please give any kind of advice if our plan might not work. very much appreciated! thanks!

Here is how we "broke-in" Jackson ....

I get up with Jackson at 5:15 - 5:30 every morning. He goes out to do his stuff and then comes back inside, either in his crate or now that he is content to play with his "dolly" locked in the bathroom with me. At 6am he has breakfast and then we go for a vigorous walk for about 20-25 minutes. Fingers are crossed that he takes care of his other business. At 6:30 I am out the door and Jackson goes back into his crate until 7am when Martha gets up. She takes him outside at around 7:30 and then again at around 8:30 when she leaves for work.

At noon I come home to feed Jackson and then take him outside to do his stuff and play. At 12:40 I am on my way back to work. I'm home for good at 4pm.

This routine was started when Jackson was about 8 weeks old. On some days he goes to work with Martha, but most days he is on this schedule.

I think that the key is consistancy. Get him on your schedule and stick to it.

It doesn't take long for them to win you over, that is for sure!! We went yesterday and saw the new puppies and I wanted to take them all home with me!!! Luckliy, the puppies are at my sister in law's house so we can go see them as often as we want to!!! We will go in another couple weeks and see if we can pick one out!! It is too early right now to see which one we really 'click' with~~
I am so excited...I can not wait!

About the potty training...

Teddy was already 10 weeks when we got him so the vet told us to take him out every couple of hours, (try to get him used to going in one certain area outside) also after feedings and after lots of hard play time. We had a treat ready in hand...we let Teddy smell the treat but didn't ever let him have it untill after he did his business. They say it's important to use the same phrase..like "go potty" or something like that because eventually they get the idea of what your talking about. Once he does his business...we give him the treat along with lots of praises (hugs and kisses). It took about 2 weeks but it worked really well and faster than any other method we ever tried with other pups. He's 13 weeks now and he goes to the coat rack and pulls on the leash to let us know he needs to go in case we forget. We are so proud of him! I am also in the process of potty training my 2 year old son....havn't had a bit of luck with him though! Any way good luck!

Too bad training your son isn't as easy as the dog was, huh??? ha ha ha
;)
Thanks for the tips! I sure appreciate them. It has been a long time since I have had a puppy so I may as well be considered a rooky!!!
Have a great day!

Where in Mass are you from. We were just wondering because we got our puppies from Cape Cod and they are around the same age. Maybe the same breed......I know it's a long shot, but it'd be so cool to find another one of Jack's sisters or brothers. (there were 9 in the litter)

Thanks....
