Check out this site.. very informative with all the links you need...

Labman 01-27-2009, 12:44 PM Chances are the absolutely the best thing to feed him for the next couple of months is whatever he was weaned on. If you look through this site, the one consistent thing is don't make any changes for a while after getting the puppy. You will find many reports of people that switched to something ''better'' and had terrible problems.
There are no studies available to the public showing any one diet is better for dogs than another. I would guess 99% of what you read on the net about dog chow is based on speculation and anecdotes. One of the few places you will find some straight talk is http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/images/nutrition-off.jpg Even that site contains links to junk science.
A few dogs develop allergies to what they eat. The most common allergies are to the most common ingredients. Avoiding the wheat your other dog was allergic to wont keep the new one from becoming allergic to whatever you do feed it. If it is going to develop allergies, it will become allergic to duck, potatoes, or free range organic lamb if that is what it is eating. So as far as developing allergies goes, it doesn't make that much difference what you start with.
One of the few things owners of large breed puppies can do to avoid health problems is keep the puppy lean and avoid rapid growth from too rich of a diet. this is commonly done and well proven by switching to an adult chow at 4 months.
My opinions tend to be a minority here. I am very skeptical of all the allegations about inferior ingredients because I was familiar with the success of the service dog programs before there was so much on the net. They have not published their results, but some of them have done extensive testing of different diets, and they are feeding common brands such as Iams, Pro Plan, Science, etc.
chocolover 01-28-2009, 10:46 AM He is just beautiful!! WOW what a face!! As far as food, i would avoid the obvious... corn, wheat, soy and by products. A good place to start might be www.dogfoodanalysis.com (http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com). The 6 star ratings are all grain free but the calcium in all of them are above 1.5% except Orijen (which is what i feed with great results) There are many good foods with good meat based ingredients without the corn, wheat..etc..... Good luck in your search. Some off the top of my head are: Eagle Pack Holistics, Innova, California Natural. Just check the ingredients i don't think wheat is in them but not sure as i feed grain free.

Ditto... minus the Eagle Pack, IMO, it's not a good buy... not saying it's a bad food, you can just get better foods for the same or less.
Taste Of The Wild is a favorite kibble over here. It's very important, despite the puppy's eagerness not to over feed.. especially being that young.
What a sweet little pup! Congrats. I'm Leah, btw, along with Maxwell the Great Pyrenees.
MySadieGirl 01-28-2009, 07:47 PM Congrats, he's adorable!
LabLoverNMiami 01-29-2009, 10:42 AM I agree- #1- He is Beautiful!! Congrats! #2 check out dogfoodanalysis.com .
Choosing a chow is a personal decison based on your pup- your pocket and conveince ( IMO). My dog has allergies so she is fed accordingly. What works best for your dog is what you'll find success with.
Congrats again!
