View Full Version : Nutritional Deficiency?

Ab likes to eat all sorts of things, even right after meal time. I've got her on TOTW, and I'm feeding according to the package. I've found rocks/gravel in her stool sometimes. She also goes after rabbit pellets, and anything else that smells bad. I know dogs in general just "get into stuff" and can eat all kind of things. However, I am wondering why she is eating rocks in particular. This in return also leads to many holes in my yard.

Watching a Dog whisperer episode once, Ol' Ceasar figured out how to get a dog to quit eating it's own stool. I'm sure he tried lots of things (don't see that part on the show) but ended up with bananas as a tool/supplement to do the trick. He said the dog had a potassium deficiency and the bananas worked. How that ties into her stool, I don't know.. Bottom line, I am wondering why Ab is eating gravel and rocks. Any ideas?

I think some dogs just like to eat rocks, especially when they are younger....this was the case with the first lab puppy I had. She was a major rock eater, but is now three years old and grew out of the eating rocks habit a long time back. And I know Tux goes to daycare with a one year old dog (golden doodle), who is a rock eater. It seems like there have been other posts where people have mentioned their dogs eating rocks...

I would be interested to see if anyone has any thoughts that maybe it is a sign of a nutritional deficiency. I saw that same episode of DW...

Sundance eats rocks, sticks hackberry leaves, and grass. I don't think he has a nutritional deficiency. I think it's be cause he's a Lab. I swear it's bread into them.

All three of my boys munch on leaves, grass, pecans, twigs, etc. they find in the yard all the time and I often find "mulch" in their poop. I don't think it has anything to do with a nutritional deficiency either.

I honestly don't think it's a deficiency. I've heard of so many dogs eating rocks. My vet was telling me about one just the other day and that dog was swallowing BIG rocks.

Charlie eats all kinds of crud. Drives me nuts. He especially likes to eat somebody else's poop - especially horse poop. I tell him to leave it and he looks at me then swallows. Little brat.

Nancy, I've been told that horse poop is a good probiotic. Not sure if I believe it, but that's what "they" say lol.
