I know this topic has been brought up umpteen times so I apologize, but since my brain is about the size of a pea I think I need someone to tell me yes or no on supplementing with vitamin E with Omega 3's.

I give Charlie just one capsule (1000mg of fish oil) each day. He is 7 months old. When he turns a year I was thinking of upping it to 2 capsules a day depending on his weight. Right now he weighs about 60 lbs. I do not supplement with vitamin E. Am I suppose to? I use Nordic Naturals which adds some vitamin E (about 15IU per capsule), but I have read that some people give vitamin E daily at 400 IU. Charlie eats Innova which has 300 IU/kg or something like that (this is what it says on the back of the bag). Is he getting enough? I have no clue.

Thanks,
Nancy

You are most likely OK not adding E because the oil contains E to balance or preserve it..and the food is top of the line and supplements with E also.. You may not even need the fish oil, but in most cases it only improves the coat and skin. Vit E is a stored Vit.. not water soluble, so too much is as bad as too little.

Thank you. My 1st yellow lab died of cutaneous lymphoma (ugly, disfiguring form of cancer) and ever since then I worry constantly about anything and everything I give my new pup Charlie. In some ways it's good and some ways it's not. LOL

Most dog chows have as much or more oil and vitamins as a dog needs. You can find one of the more rational discussions of supplements at http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/petfood.html
