We were approached by a the Dept of Juvenile Services to donate a rescue dog to their program. They are in need of a narcotics dog and they love their labs. After a lot of research, I did not want any of our dogs living in a kennel and only being let out to work, I agreed to donate a lab of ours. I asked for references..etc. (I think they are going to give me a detectives job LOL) Their dogs work and live with their handler and his/her family. They retire as family pets to the same family. Their labs go to work with them daily and home with them every nihgt...WOW. Even when they are kennelled it is in a large area where they labs get to play and bond with each other...I couldn't be more tickled.

Anyway..you all probably remember Daisy, yellow female from the Air Force guy...well as careful as I was her new home wasn't working out..change in job responsiblity, relocating.etc she was being returned and I was heartbroken. But the K-9 Unit saw Daisy and Dakota on Petfinder and were very intersted in Daisy.

What a great afternoon two officers came to evaluate the dogs. This was really cool the Sgt and the Cpl were stand up guys. I get to visit thier facility, go to a training excercise any time I want and even visit the Cpl new home. I feel so good about this I'm so glad I gave them a chance.

So who did they choose?? They were stumped...Daisy was who they came for but Dakota beat her in every single test. They told me he has every quality a working dog should have. Daisy did great too...she is overweight and was running all morning so she was tired but she passed the tests easily. They test them for focus, drive, possession and over all did a temperment test. They use balls, kongs and a rolled up towel. It was cool to watch..I'm so into all that anyway.

He ended up choosing Daisy but it was more of a personal than a professional decision. Their dogs are such a big part of their family the Cpl thought his dog Bran would prefer to have a female in the home full time...but he shook his head because "Mam Dakota is one beautiful lab and he is everything we want in a working dog or a family pet, hell if my wife was expecting me to come home with two dogs I'd take them both but I may get in a bit of hot water for that"

A few pics....just Dakota, Daisy went first and didn't think to take pics.

Deneen, this is such wonderful news, in all kinds of ways. Daisy will have so much training and attention! Her original owner will be so proud of her. The second owner (whom we might now consider a very helpful long term foster) will be so happy for Daisy. I also love that this once again proves wonderful dogs are available for adoption from rescues and shelters!

What a great story Deneen! I'm so happy for Daisy, but I'm beginning to become convinced that Dakota was meant to stay with you!

Cheers!
