View Full Version : Orijen shortage now looking for alternative

I was forced to buy a 15lb bag at a premium  due to the shortage of Orijen Adult. My internet order is on hold, so I've got a short window to make a decision... stick with this or start to introduce Jack to a new food.

Jack survived parvo as a 10 week old pup, and his digestive system is, uh, sensitive to say the least. Even on Orijen he has soft stools. We cut back on the amount we were feeding him but then he was far too skinny so upped it a 1/4 cup per day and now he is healthy again.

So I am looking for a grain-free food that is also the same price, or better yet, less expensive than Orijen Adult. Any recommendations you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Mark

Hi Mark,

The Orijen is 40% prot. 16% fat so try and stick close to that since Jack is doing well on it.

EVO is one (the one with lower fat because of Jack's issues). The regular EVOs are 22% fat. The weight mgmnt is 15% fat but higher in protein at 52% rather than 42%. The protein is turkey and chicken.

I use to feed Natures Variety Instinct and my dogs did well on it. But that too is 42% protein and 22% fat if I remember correctly.

Have a pup in pet home on EVO doing well. Others are still on the Instinct doing well.

Canidae makes a grain free but it does have chick, turkey, lamb and fish in it. Don't know if any of those proteins are a problem for Jack. Its also 18% fat which may be too much for him. However the protein is only 34%.

Canidae may be your best bet as it seems to be closest to the Orijen (other than all the protein sources)

My dogs are on a kibble rotation. I'm just transitioning off Orijen at the moment and starting Horizon Legacy grain free (another Canadian Company). I've never had such an easy transition. Protein and fat amount is similar to Orijen, but they use peas as the carb instead of potato. It might be slightly lower in price. You can see if the food is available near you by going to their site: http://www.horizonpetfood.com/retailers.html

I've also fed the grain-free Acana Provincial Prairie Harvest (same company as Orijen) but with lower 34% protein very successfully. it's a few dollar less than Orijen.

The Acana mentioned above may be good for Jack as its only 17% fat (Orijen 16) and its a bit less money. Its also chicken based which he is doing well on now.

Hi,
I've run into the same issue with Orijen (the shortage). I picked up the Acana Prarie Harvest at the recommendation of the owner of doggiefood.com where I purchase Gus' food. So far so good.
