I feel bad calling him a rescue, we think so...you can be the judge!! :)

I was looking on the web and found a message board for schnauzers. My beloved Coby was a schnauzer that had gone to the bridge 4 yrs ago, so I thought I would just read about other schnauzers. Well, there was a post by a vet tech for a 5 yr old schnauzer that had been living with an 81 yr old lady that no longer could care for the dog in Lexington, KY! How odd on the big world wide web that there would be a listing for a boy that was just 45 mins away from me! I called right away and made an appointment to meet the dog at that vet's office that afternoon.

I went in knowing I was taking this dog (you know how you do! LOL). My breath was taken away. He was so cute and looked so similar to Coby! I could see past the matted hair. He was very weird acting though. He was so afraid and shy. The little lady who owned him said that she also owned his brother, but could not afford to keep them both with the expensive vet bills. Max had an episode of vomiting. The vet had X-rayed him and did blood work - costing well over $400!

She was the sweetest little lady ever. I told her that we would take the very best care of Max. She was very happy to meet us and felt very comfortable with him going home with us.

We got him home - a huge little butterball. We took him into our backyard. He looked around in amazement. It was so peculiar. He ran to the pool, looked at it and to my dismay jumped right in and sank to the bottom. It all happened so fast! I fished him out. I later called the lady, as we planned to talk further on the phone.

Max had NEVER been outside. Just to go to the vet. He pottied on newspapers always, which she had told me, but I didn't know he wasn't allowed outdoors. She said that she was afraid that he would get hurt. BUT, without exercise he was enormous. His toenails were so long! I had a copy of his vet records and he had been seen 2 yrs before for his nails growing into his pads! She said she was afraid to trim them and was unable to get him all the way to the groomer. Bless this lady's heart. She carried these dogs everywhere around her house. They don't go up stairs, don't even know how, they don't get groomed, no toys, they eat table food. Although she is giving them the only love she knows how and loves these dogs with all her heart, they are still pitiful!

We took Max to the vet, and he was shocked. His cholesterol was so high. He was put on a strict diet and told to lose 10 lbs. That is a lot of weight on such a small dog.

Over the past months he has lost weight, runs, goes potty outdoors (he has learned to lift his leg!), he has learned how play ball, go up and down steps and eat dogfood! He is a new dog with a new lease on life. Although he was very much loved, I still feel like we rescued him in a sense. :)

He was meant to be with us. :)

Definite rescue, he would prolly be dead otherwise. He's a cutie, too. Good for you, there's a special place in Heaven for you!!!
