View Full Version : Our rescue, Hannah
I was turned onto the rescue scene while helping my sister-in-law and her rescue group...help 17 collies in need. They were living in terrible conditions and good homes were found for all of them. Despite their conditions...they were all very friendly and oh so happy to see us come to help them. This was when I decided that my next dog would be a rescue-dog. I started checking around and found a Golden Retriever group who had a litter of 3 (what was thought to be) lab/golden puppies which just came in from a high-kill shelter in Virginia. As soon as I saw their picture I knew one of them was for us. We chose a girl we named Hannah. At first she was so timid. We were told she was only 10 weeks old. When I took her to the veterinarian we were told she was really about 5 months old and very under-nourished. We were also told that she might have some lab but she is mostly a sighthound or spaniel mix...with a high-prey instinct. She started feeling comfortable with us and WOW her real personality came out in full force. She was absolutely WILD! I was almost at my wits end....my husband couldn't handle her and our daughter was almost afraid of her. I was so afraid that she was aggressive but I wanted to try and find a solution. Then, I was lucky enough to find terrific obedience classes to sign up for and she and I did them all. With alot of patience, love and understanding, Hannah has turned into a wonderful, loving and very obedient dog. We've had her for over 2 years now and I'm glad she is part of our family.
Here she is checking out the cute dog next door. ;)
oops...forgot to attach the picture.

SpideyMike 08-18-2004, 03:31 PM it's stories like these that get me right here, and motivate me to get my future lab from rescue
Black Labbies 08-18-2004, 03:46 PM Hannah is a sweetie!
Stories like Hannah's always warms my heart. Thanks for being there for her :) .
Were these the Collies that a puppy-miller was trying to get across the Canadian border, or is that another, similar story?
LindaAcup 08-18-2004, 07:00 PM GREAT story and she is beautiful. Actually prettier than some PB labs, don't you think? I love her look, very unique and so glad you didn't give up on her. There's a special place in Heaven for you.
abbychick 08-27-2004, 07:06 PM She's a doll. I always love reading the rescue stories since both my dogs are rescues. You must feel so good that you were able to give her such a good home and so much love.
Hi Karen,
Yes, every time I look at her I feel great that she's in our home. She is the sweetest thing and I just love her so much. You can just tell she loves us all too (in different ways). With my husband, she absolutely melts all over the floor when he walks in the room...it's hilarious. With my daughter she goes in her room and gives her a kiss and then walks out as if to say..."I just want to say I love you" and with me, she'll sit next to me on the sofa and lay her head in my lap.
What are your rescue stories about your dogs?

Madison's Mom 08-29-2004, 06:26 PM Great story. Hannah is beautiful. You both are very lucky to have found each other.
abbychick 08-31-2004, 02:33 AM Hi Kabob,
Sorry.....I haven't been on in a few days. Hannah is beautiful by the way. Our first rescue, a 1 yr old golden retriever/husky cross, Angel came from the SPCA. We've had her for about 6 months. Copper is our newest baby. He's a 3 yr old yellow lab/golden retriever cross. We found him with the help of a wonderful person named Natalie off this site. He'd been with his original family who decided they no longer had the time for him. He'd been recently diagnosed with epilepsy and they didn't want to deal with giving him medication!!! Oh well, their loss....our gain. He is the sweetest, most loving dog ever and we all adore him. He's by my feet as I type. I'll try and add a picture of the two of them....I don't always have much luck. I'd love to hear more about your babies.
Oh WOW! They are really great looking dogs you have. The colorings on Angel are really pretty. They look like they are best buddies. :)
You are a wonderful person for taking in both Angel and Copper...but especially, Copper.
I can't understand people that "don't have time for the dog." It's a lifetime commitment when you get a dog...no matter what the problems may be....and I'll never understand why some people don't get that concept.
We got Hannah when she was 5 months old and was expecting that she would be like our first dog, Cori...who was a calm, easy-to-train, obedient girl. Hannah was at the opposite end of the spectrum and we weren't too experienced to handle it. (She was WILD...she would bite if you didn't pay attention to her, she wouldn't listen and would run from you, she would tear up blankets and towels in anger...you name it). But I plowed thru and wanted to do whatever I could....I didn't want to give her back but I was worried because my daughter was afraid of her and my husband was losing patience fast. I found a wonderful trainer and signed up for every obedience class I could. I stuck with her and Hannah has come a long way in the 3 short years she's been with us. I absolutely love her and she has become such a sweetheart. She is very obedient and listens and has made a complete turnaround.
With our second dog, Cole...he was adopted from our vet clinic when he was 9 weeks old. He received lots of love in his tender weeks so he was much easier to handle.
Here's a pic of them.

no1utefan 08-31-2004, 08:56 AM Abbychick - I still can't believe that Copper is with you guys there, having the time of his life! He SO deserved a great family and that's what he got. He has a great sister and a great family that appreciates him for the wonderful dog he is. I just had to say what a beautiful picture that was of Angel and Copper. They look like they are the best of friends! :D I'm pretty interested in how Copper is doing so thanks for the update!
Kbob -thanks for sharing your rescue stories! I truly believe that it is SO worth the hard work and effort when you work with these rescues. You just never know what has happened to them in the past. Thanks for sticking it out with Hannah! I know that she appreciates it.
Your dogs are all just beautiful! Just like with people, sometimes all it takes is a bit of patience and love to bring out their true selves. :D Just had to say thanks for adopting these wonderful dogs and giving them the time, love and attention they SO deserve!
Thank you, no1utefan! It's nice to feel appreciated. :)
abbychick 08-31-2004, 11:44 AM Kbob....the picture of your angels is adorable. They really are good looking dogs. It sure sounds like all your hard work has payed off!!! We still have some issues to work out with Angel. She has an incredible stubborn streak in her and needs to work on her recall. I've done obedience classes but I'm going to sign up with a trainer for some private classes. Her biggest problem is her on leash aggression. I can take her to the off leash park and she's almost always fine unless someone growls at her first. On, leash is another story. I walk her on a gentle leader so I can handle her and she lunges at every dog we pass and rears up on the leash like a stallion. She looks very aggressive when she does it. I've tried different things people have suggested but nothing's worked. Can anyone help?
Copper on the other is extremely mellow and well behaved. If he knows there's a treat around.....he's not going anywhere. LOL
Natalie, great to hear from you. I hadn't noticed you around lately. Copper Dawg is doing awesome and we love him sooooo much!!!! He's a doll and him and Angel get along great. I'll keep you updated with pics.
no1utefan 08-31-2004, 07:31 PM Karen - I have been busy with school. It started back up this week for the semester so I've been pretty busy lately. I'll write more later. I'm so glad that Copper is fitting in so well with your family! You guys are awesome!
