Seems like I have read somewhere that peanut butter isn't good for our beloved friends, but a while back, before we got Jack, our friends got a dog and while they were away during the day they would sometimes give him his kong filled with peanut butter to occupy him. You wouldn't believe it but the dog licked all of the peanut butter out of the knog. I decided to try this when we first got Jack and he tore up less things in the kitchen during the day when he had his peanut butter knog, but his small bladder sometimes had trouble holding all of the water he had to drink to clear the peanut butter! It was well worth cleaning up the lanolium floor rather than buying new dishtowles! Now that he is older he is able to handle holding it until I come home for lunch/at the end of the day.

Thanks.

I've read in numerous books that it is ok every once in a while as a special treat, to give peanut butter...that the only side affect is that it is very fattening...sometimes...if Jack is extra cute, i put a dab on my finger and let him lick it off...he goes NUTS!!!...but i don't know if i would give him anymore than that...he's already a little tank at 4 months 35lbs....and solid to boot!!

You just have to be careful with the peanut butter thats all. We were giving Cooper too much, went for a regular check at the vet and he was overweight. He came back to normal after we stopped the daily Peanut Butter Kong.

Now we just use it as a treat every so often.

Yep. Peanut Butter Kong is an every-so-often treat in our house. We just can't seem to put weight on Jack though. He eats twice a day but doesn't seem to be HUNGRY and much of an overeater (when we were just leaving food out at first). Anyway.

Jack decided to eat the end of his kong and now he has half of it left. This is gross but we found it in the yard the other day.....if you get the gross drift. It is hard to miss bright blue kong.

YUCK....

I just went out and bought my puppy a miniature kong. It's red :p:
But anyways..I don't exactly intend on filling it with Peanut Butter right away. Peanut Butter IS very fattening to dogs and puppies.
I bought this set, where the kong came with this liver flavoured filling spray can. There's liver flavored foam inside the can, and you fill the kong with it.

A way to give your dogs the flavor of PB without giving them too much is to put a little bit (1-2 teaspoons) in a small dish and microwave it until it's really soft (20-30 seconds), then mix a little kibble with it, and stuff the Kong with that mixture. That way the pups are interested, because they smell the PB, but they're not licking straight PB out of the Kong.

Another idea is to grate a carrot and combine it with a tablespoon or so of PB, and use this mixture to stuff the Kong. That way it'll taste like PB, but again, you're diluting it with something healthy so they're not getting so much. Store the unused carrot/PB mixture in the fridge.

btw, this carrot/PB idea is also a great way to "sneak" veggies in to your kids' diets! They won't even realize their PB&J sandwich has been altered, but they'll be getting a little extra fiber and vitamins. :)

Canter:

Those are great ideas. I'll have to try them out. I haven't tried carrots yet, but I bet he will like them.

Thanks.

Yesterday I ran out of peanut butter after making the kids' lunches, and I gave Jessie, our lab the empty jar. Boy did she have fun! There probably wasn't a teaspoon left in the jar, but she worked on it for a good 45 minutes. What fun!

Haha -- we do the same thing with Molly, and she loooves it! She works on it forever, too! The only thing is that we have hardwood floors, and that jar was LOUD bouncing around! But she was so cute to watch -- I love when she gets really interested in something and gets that cute labby intelligent look on her face. :)

Today I replaced our jar of peanut butter with one of those new Skippy Squeeze tubes. Can't wait to see her chewing on that when it's empty. Ha!

I fill my kongs with pb and other treats to fill them up and not have so much pb. one great thing to do is to freeze the kong with the stuffing inside over night. they treat will last 2x longer!!! I have a couple kongs with one always frozen in case i need some undistracted quiet time.

yup ! Sonny & Cher love their PB Kong. Once or twice a week is all though... No fat pups arounde here.. they run around too much and keep each other slim.

They have their own jar of PB.
