View Full Version : Please Help Me Pick a 1 Protein, 1 Carb Food

I've been feeding my labs Canidae Lamb and Rice for awhile now. The older of the 2 (one is 3 and the other is 1) has some allergy issues that we solved when he was a puppy by switching to this formula. When I got the younger one, I started her on the same food. They've both been doing great, but this new formula is wreaking havoc. I want to find another 1 protein, 1 carb food, but with all the brands out there, I don't know where to begin. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I'd like a food that's as high quality as Canidae. I don't want to say that money is no issue, but when it comes to my dogs, I'm willing to spend a little more to ensure that they're getting quality food that'll keep them healthy. Thanks in advance!

Dan

I feed Canidae ALS which both of your dogs could eat. The Lamb & Rice might be too rich for one or both of them. I know Hershey doesn't do well on Lamb so I avoid it. He does great on the ALS. Try that first and maybe you will have some luck before changing to a new brand.

We use Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato. It works fantastic for us!! Here's a page of all of their allergy formulas - each with one carb and one protein.

http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/allergy.html

Our girl has awful allergies so we made sure to pick a novel protein (one she hasn't had) and a carb that wasn't a grain (for example, potato or sweet potato). This was a recommendation from board members here, our regular vet, and Annie's dermatologist. They were ALL right...she has done great on this very very simple food.

The Canidae ALS is a great food, but it might be difficult for an allergy dog to deal with because it has 4 different proteins, 2 different grains, and flax, which is notorious for setting off allergy dogs. If your dog had an allergic reaction on this food, it would be very difficult to figure out what was causing it because of the 4 different proteins in it. Remember that for allergies, the simpler the food, the easier time you will have. Good luck to ya!

Just curious what's going on? I've yet to get a bag of the new formula so I'm curious to hear how others are doing.

They've both been having loose, light colored poops. It hasn't gotten any better over about 2.5-3 weeks. Also, the younger one has been really digging at her ears. I know there are a lot of possible causes for this, but she hasn't been swimming in forever, and nothing has changed in the past month or so, except the food. Also, she's been throwing up, mostly yellowish liquid. It's not everyday but it, too, started right after she had he first meal of the new formula.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have any experience with EVO or with Wellness CORE? I like the idea of the no grain, low carb food but I'd be interested to hear other's experiences.

Lovely. Find a food that works and it changes. I was hoping to hear good things but in all fairness I've yet to hear someone actually likes it. It's scared me off from even trying it since I know I have one lab with sensitive stomach issues. I'm going to the California Naturals Herring and Sweet Potato. I'd like to do the Lamb and Rice but their fiber content is only 2% and I'm not sure if that's enough. At least in the Herring and Sweet Potato there is a 3.7% fiber content. Something to consider for your dogs too.

One of my dogs did well on Wellness Core, bot the other scratched more and I would guess the flax is the problem. My son's dog does well on the Core. Both my dogs are currently on an EVO rotation for breakfast and love it. We give Honest Kitchen Thrive dehydrated with a little canned food at night. Orijen (grain-free) and Nature's Variety Instinct Duck and Turkey (grain-free) work well for us also.

If you can't find a suitable single protein/carb food, why not try a small bag of grain free? It's usually the grains in dog food that cause most of the problems. Evo is grain free but it has more than one protein source. I don't know about Canidae's new formula but their other formulas have a lot of flaxseed in it that causes havoc with many dogs.

Thanks to everyone who replied. One of my labs had a wheat allergy and I suspect the barley is the problem with Canidae's new formula. I decided to go grain free, and I'm trying Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato. I figure it's a protein and a carb they haven't had so we'll see how that works. It's just a shame Canidae had to change their formula. They were both doing terrific on it.
