Hi,

I am currently feeding my 10 month old puppy Eukanuba puppy food for large breed puppies. But lately Dutch has horrible gas and his poop stinks really bad. I was thinking about switching to Iams, but i wanted to see if anyone recommended another brand. I would like to have a brand that is easily available, but at teh same time the best I can give him. I also heard about Blue food, is this brand any good? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

I have a costco near me and was thinking about the kirkland brand also, but I just read the post about that and it seems to be the same problem I am running into. Dutch has teh worst smelling gas around.

anyway, any helk would be great.

hi;
I feed my puppies/dogs ProPlan by Purina..I personnaly don't feed large breed puppy.. very happy with the results..I used to feed iams and I was at a lab speciality (years ago) in Chicago and it was around the time that the food was being introduced to grocery stores and the nutrience (sp) advised that the formula would be changing..trust me it did..thats when I switched to ProPlan and I'm not sorry that I did...18 yrs ago...
I think that the big recall on dog food involved Iams as well...

good luck

ProPlan (large breed puppy because Scout is only 4 months old) is working great for us. She just had her checkup an hour ago and she's in great health. Although I'm always looking at other options, I hate to stop a good thing. We haven't noticed any gas or smelly poop issues. :2cents:

I use Innova but it can be harder to find. I happen to have a store that carries it around the corner from my house. Here's a link to a GREAT site that can help you make an informed decision but from what I know the Blue Buffalo is a good product and it's sold at Petsmart.

At 10 months old, i would definitely be looking into an adult food. My recommendation is Taste Of The Wild, it's grain free, packed full of meat and you can find it at a great price... I think here it is 43 dollars for 33 pounds. You'll find that you feed a lot less of a grain free food vs. a grain included food. It's more nutrient dense and doesn't have the grainy fillers. I bought my raw fed dog a bag of the High Prairie to eat while the lawn was being treated. He maintained his weight on 3 1/2 - 4 cups a day... he's 140 pounds.

From what I have read, and hear, Kirkland is great food to feed. I would feed adult formula though at 10 months.

I ended up buying wellness to try. It got really good reviews and the ingredients look good. But it is awfully expensive.

It is more expensive initially, yes.. but you will find that you feed less than you with do less desirable brands.. so it will even out... sometimes it's even a cheaper investment.

Gas may be because of the food.. Or not enough digestion taking place...

It may be a grain in the food causing an issue...

Look for foods that have plenty of Meat...

Best buy in the market today is Taste of the Wild...for price and it is grain free... Diamonds top of the line product.

If you want safety and quality look at Cal Nat Lamb....very simple and highly digestible diet. You pay more for the quality of ingredients and their new State of the Art facility..

I have had good luck with Eukanuba, Iams, and mostly Pro Plan. Iams and Eukanuba are made by the same company and have very similar ingredients. It may be they are more sold to different markets than any other difference. If the food is causing the problem, you want more than a different colored bag. Look for one with a different protein source. Isn't a lot of the Eukanuba beef? If so, a chicken or lamb might be a good idea. And I agree, an adult chow.

If this is something that just started, you might have the vet do a fecal check.

Most dogs will do fine on most chows. A few dogs will have trouble on some chows. I don't think there is a chow out there that somebody hasn't reported bad gas or soft stools. Many people dismiss Pro Plan, but notice several people reporting good luck with it. There is a great absense of sound information on dog chows and plenty of stron opinions.

Like I said, if you want your dog to do "fine" on a food, good for you. I choose for my dog to do "GREAT" on a higher quality food like CN, Innova, TOW, Wellness, Etc.

Wellness is a good choice. Hope it works for you. ;)
