Someone posted in this section (Diet & Nutrition) with the title "would you switch??"

I have never heard that Diamond makes Solid Gold?

I believe they also make Premium Edge, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul, and Cotsco dog food products.

Me either, but I started to wonder when I read that post.

Its definitely worth researching. With the recall, so many links between dog food companies are becoming visible that many of us had no idea existed.

I knew of the link between Diamond and Kirkland. I knew of the link between Iams and Eukanuba. I used Natural Balance products for years but I didn't know Diamond "made" their food.

The easiest way to find this info would probably be to call the customer service number which should be located somewhere on the dog food bag. You can ask if there is any connection or otherwise any relationship whatsoever between the two companies (and hope they answer truthfully).

Well regardless if Diamond makes it or not, Diamond's own foods are still good and have not been touched by the recalls at all. They are just a big company like Purina and smaller companies contract them to make their foods and Diamond puts in what they are paid too. So don't freak out of your food is made my Diamond and sold by Diamond, all those are still fine. I feed Diamond Naturals myself and the company as assured people that none of their own foods have any of the problem ingredients in them like wheat gluten or rice protein.

Sorry but I hate people bashing Diamond foods because other companies paid them to make their foods and bought bad ingredients for them.

I don't think anyone is bashing any dog food company in particular here. I think everyone is understandably trying to do the best they can to make sure their dogs are safe.

Natural Balance (which I supported staunchly for years) claimed strongly that they and none of their foods were affected by the recall... but a few days later... the truth came out.

I'm not bashing Diamond. I know a lot of people who have been very happy with their food. But certainly Diamond is not without its own tragic history, either.

One board member called Purina this week with questions about the recall and was told that people were "exaggerating the scope of the food recall." What an outrageous thing to say, from Purina who is seen by so many as a leader in the dog food industry.

I think this is the time to seek assurances from the dog food manufacturers we use.

I am sorry to cause panic and I certainly did not mean to bash any food! But I called the company (Solid Gold) yesterday and asked if they made their own food and was told no that diamond manufactures their food. It is made to their specs with their ingredients but in the same facility. And they did assure me that there was no wheat or rice gluten in solid gold products but it still makes me kinds of uneasy and since our puppy wasn't doing well on it anyway it seems like a good time to switch.

I want to start this post off by saying I feed Kirkland which is made by Diamond and am somewhat comfortable continuing to do so.

Has anyone seen the show "How it's made"? I personally am fascinated by how things are created and put together so I watch it quite often. My thoughts are, after seeing so many factories on that show I truly don't believe it is possible for Diamond to completely clean the production line from one brand's requirements to the next brands. There has got to be "residue" on conveyors and such.
My personal concerns is the quanity of that "residue".

I am not trying to alarm anyone, but you have to look at production logically and profitability. It is not cost effective to "hose down" a dog food plant between brand runs

Yep I know Diamond has had it's issues. But then so has Purina and a bunch of other big companies. I would hope the companies learned from their mistakes. And I apologize for getting somewhat touchy about the subject. Heck I have only feed Diamond Naturals for a few months, but as of yet I have no real reason to change, especially since it's the best I can get without driving 75 miles.

I got this off of the Diamond Website about the dog food recall. Thought I would post it considering it talks about cross contamination as Boysmom mentioned.

Posted on 4/19/2007

Q: Is the rice used in your food safe? A: Yes - our white rice, brown rice, rice bran, rice flour, and brewers rice that we use in various formulas are all safe and free from melamine contamination. Q: How do you know that the rice protein concentrate did not contaminate other foods? A: We have procedures for cleaning out our equipment between batches, to avoid cross contamination. We were recently audited by Silliker Labs, a company that evaluates human grade manufacturing facilities. We scored 100% for prevention of cross contamination, something we are very proud of. Q: What is rice protein concentrate? A: Rice protein concentrate is a by-product of the rice syrup industry. Unlike other rice ingredients, it is very high in protein. It is not the same ingredient as white rice, brown rice, brewers rice, rice bran or rice flour. Q: Do you use wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate in your foods? A: We do not use these ingredients in any of our own brands. We did use rice protein concentrate in two Natural Balance recipes that have been recalled - Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice dry dog food and Natural Balance Venison & Green Pea dry cat food.

Hope this gives people SOME small peace of mind. I am still going to feed Diamond Naturals until I have a good clear reason not to. So please I would urge you not to switch your food unless your dog either doesn't do well on it, or something from that brand got recalled.

Exactly what I was thinking!

I guess I'll be switching over to a home cooked diet for my dogs quicker than I was expecting.

If your on Solid Gold and it doesn't contain any of the "products" Jill (Patex) has listed on the alert thread. I personally wouldn't change. If it does contain those products and you haven't done enough research on going RAW yet, please search this board and see what people are saying is safe---as far as kibble style dog food goes.

I feed Kirkland (Costco) made by Diamond. Yes, it contains rice but not the rice protein. Yes, I believe that a production plant can't clean completely between food runs but I am sticking to what I feed unless something drastic happens, either dogs have a reaction or Diamond comes out with the mother of all recalls.

It ain't broke and I'm not going to panic and stress my dogs digestion system trying to fix something that doesn't need fixing.
That being said....I'm keeping fingers crossed too :D

I've been feeding Solid Gold for years and I've always said that if I was to switch foods it would be to a home cooked diet.
There's no better time for me to switch than now. I usually go with my gut feeling and I think it's time for me to make that switch.
