View Full Version : Questions about pig ears, knee caps, femurs etc
RamItOne 06-04-2008, 10:42 PM First off ive only been on this site a few days andhave picked up a few things and have had my questions answered!!!! :)
Every time I'm at the feed store I buy a pig ear or a knee cap etc for my two girls. Is one better than the other for them or does one thing have more of X and the other more of Y?¿? Ive also bought tendons.
I saw the post somewhere on here about a dog gettin its lower jaw stuck through the short femurs, so I went in the garage and took my 30# axe and kablamo, cut right in half.
Noel's Mom 06-05-2008, 03:53 AM I give mine pig ears from time to time, but try to stay away from the cooked, processed bones found in the pet stores or feed stores. If I give them bones, they're usually raw. A pig ear here and there is fine for Noel, but if I give them to much it tears her tummy up.
Charlie'sDad 06-05-2008, 06:09 AM Go to your butcher and pick up lengths of femur bones, 4-5 inches in length. Stick them in the freezer, and give them to the pups raw as treats. The pup will likely spend hours eating the meat around the outside and sucking out the marrow inside. It's a good healthy treat, and the chewing action will keep the pup's teeth sparkly clean.
Personally, I like to give these raw bones over things like pig ears or rawhides.
RamItOne 06-05-2008, 08:12 AM Thanks, any idea what a butcher would charge if any for the bones?
id also like to look into raw feeding, but thatll be for another time...
rbag2blacklabs 06-05-2008, 08:17 AM I don't buy pigs ears anymore. Some brands are sweetened with corn sweetner. I have a lab that's allergic to corn !!
if you "make nice" to the butcher he'll probably give them to you.then see if he has marrow bones too.
Coopspuppy 06-05-2008, 08:50 AM The raw food thread on here is pretty interesting if you are into that. I spent a lot of time learning there.....when you are ready!

Some retailers have picked up on the fact that these bones have some value to dog owners, so they're charging a little. I pay approx. $1/bone--so a couple bucks gets me a couple bones.
I'm sure there's butchers out there who give them away. I don't think they're good for much else, other than maybe making soup.
Heather 06-06-2008, 01:36 PM Our grocery sells bones for $1.29/lb.... but, when beef ribs go on sale they are just .99/lb... Lately my dogs have been eating more raw beef rib racks than bones!

Dang....that's some good eating :thumb4: I have no problem giving mine a raw marrow bone a couple times a month, but there would be a wrestling match between my dogs and my hubby over a rack of ribs. He already thinks the dogs eat better than we do.
RamItOne 06-06-2008, 06:53 PM Noel's mom- is there an issue with giving them too many bones, not like a bone a day or anything.
Since I smashed those femurs I bought into half dollar size bones ive been giving them 1 every other day, so I assume thats not an issue.
LabLoverNMiami 06-25-2008, 06:53 AM Yes, I'm interested in how many bones are too much? My Angel loves knuckle bones- any comments on these?

Charlie's Dad- I have to tell you- Charlie is absolutely gorgeous! We should all take heed and do exactly what you are doing! I have a creamy colored girl Angel that I rescued almost a month ago and I wouldn't trade her for anything-maybe the husband- NEVER the dog! LOL. Anyway, Angel came to me with very dry skin and a few sores -hot spots whatever. So, I got the (pink) Vet's formula shampoo and changed her food to the blue buffalo line hoping that this will eleviate her skin problems. I don't know what she was fed before I got her ( not much of anything she was on the puny side) but now she has filled out a little and doing great :D. I cannot imagine life without her and would literally hurt someone if they ever mistreated her  ! We think she was abused before us because she cowars sometimes and is very submissive when you call her. But, with a lot of gentle talking and loving she has come a long way in just 3 short weeks!:D
Her name suits her well. She's perfect!
