Is there a surefire way to put some weight on my foster without causing loose stools. He is so active, and soooo skinny. He is eating much better and we've only had him 36 hrs. I just know he'll feel better if he could get some padding on him. He is eating Nutro Evo. This is what the foster program is providing. OMG, his ribs show so bad.

How skinny? Ribs? Spine and Ribs? Spine and Ribs and hip bones showing?

Beef is very high in calories - you could mix hamburger into his food, shouldn't cause too many problems.
If he is absolutely emaciated you could try a high calorie supplement like Nutri-cal, but it's awfully sugary so if he's in pretty good health I wouldn't bother.
A bit of organic peanut butter might help (don't give too big of a blob at once - choking hazard).

Wellie was 20 lbs underweight - he got nutri-cal for a few days (left over from ill senior dog), but a regular feeding schedule had him up to normal within a couple of weeks. Actually, I wish I could get him down 5 lbs or so now! :D

Thanks for the advise. He was very skinny when the rescue first got him. He is now about 15 pounds underweight. His ribs still show too much. His hips are starting to cover. His vet says he is a lot healthier and building good muscle tone. He was a street dog for a long time, and malnourished. His coat is starting to shine up and he's got lots of energy. We just want to get him built up pretty so he can find a good home.

Here is his midway picture, not as bad as when he first got there, and he is better now.

My vet would tell you that from that picture he's nearing on perfect :) Just a couple more pounds to go? I asked her if my puppy was too skinny and she said "A dogs gotta be pretty skinny for me to say he's too skinny." She thinks that obesity is the biggest problem in companion animals and the cause of so many other conditions.

Anyways good luck with your foster! He looks very handsome!

I think that him being skinny and active is a lot less of a problem than being the opposite. My Bailey is a couch potato and tips the scales at 111.

Plus, I don't think that you would want to get him to gain weight too quickly. Everything should be done slowly and in moderation.

Since you are feeding him EVO, you could also add Innova canned to his daily meals (unless you are trying to totally avoid grains).

Yeah, he doesn't look too bad, really. I'd rather see one or two ribs than four or five, though. I'll bet a regular feeding schedule of good food, and maybe some hamburger on his dinner, and he'll be good in no time. He looks young, so skinny is better, and if he's got good muscle and energy, then he's not bad at all. It's the skinny and listless and no energy dogs that worry me.

Handsome dog!
