View Full Version : RAW BONE = RUNNY STOOL?

For those of you who do not know, Bucko has been on a limited ingredient diet. After much discussion and thought with members here, I decided to give him California Natural Lamb and Rice and he's doing quite well on it.
Sticking with lamb as the protein source, I tried giving him a raw lamb shank bone (from Global Pet Foods). Unfortunately, it didn't agree with him at all - he had runny stool for 2 days after that........................................

I do know that raw meat digests before cooked, so I gave the raw meaty bone BEFORE supper. However, did I give the bone too soon before supper? Does anyone know if this is why he got diarrhea? Or should I be avoiding these bones?????????? I have 6 more in my freezer, so it's ashame if he can't enjoy them.
I eventually want to go raw, so any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The marrow of bones will often cause diarrhea in dogs the first time its introduced into their diet. Its best to give them only small amounts at a time until they adjust to digesting it.

Right, so I guess I should set a time limit on it? He cleaned & ripped the lamb bone apart in half an hour....

Also, since it's RAW, do I need to avoid feeding him cooked food for a certain amount of time after?

Thanks for the advice. :)

I am somewhat reluctant to answer that for you since I don’t know all of Bucko’s health history.
If it were my healthy happy pups(thank god for that) I wouldn’t worry about it. But the best thing is to ask your Vet. He should have no problem answering that question for you in a quick phone call.

What I heard is that Raw digests faster than Cooked in any dog - healthy or not. So I was just wondering how long one should wait before feeding cooked. I haven't found a vet that I trust yet and would much rather find an answer from someone here at the lab board!

Just a general comment (I know little about raw and kibble and mixing). When my boy gets a full lamb shank he gets the runs a day later. So yes, a raw bone CAN cause runny stools with some dogs.

I have head that too but I feed my Mal raw and the rest are fed dry and I dont mix the two, except raw eggs, mine eat those all the time. So hope someone is able to help you out with that.

Have you tried limiting his time with the lamb shank, so he only knaws on say 1/3 of it at a time? And did he still get the runs?

unfortunately I tend to forget I even have the bones in the freezer LOL! then by the time he gets one I forget about the "getting the runs" issue and forget to take it aaway. I've been told if I take it away sooner his system should handle it better (or if he got it on a more regular basis he would get used to it)

Scoop out some of the marrow before they eat it it wont be as rich.

Rolph here has a very sensitive stomach. I feed California Natural lamb and Rice too. The first couple raw bones really came out runny. A little rich on his system it seemed.

Anyway now he does fine getting marrow bones, bison knuckles, turkey necks, ect. In fact, of all I feed him, turkey necks come out the firmest, and that is saying something.
