View Full Version : Raw Diet Question: Beef Heart

Finding organ meat has been one of the challenges in our raw diet. Today I hit the jackpot at our local grocery store and not only found nice long beef marrow bones but beef heart as well! We've never tried it before. They had a bunch of other stuff too (pigs feet, pork neck bones but I'm still wary of raw pork). I got the heart & split a 1.5 lb package between them for dinner tonight, with a nice veggie mush, and they adored it. I swear they were moaning the whole time they ate... licked their bowls clean, licked the floor around the bowls, and then relicked each other's bowls. The question I have is this: They are FULL. These dogs massacre huge amounts of chicken wings, necks, even leg quarters at every meal and beg for more, but this smaller meal seems to have satisfied them completely. I gather it's fairly rich. Should something like this be an infrequent treat, like the equivalent of that very nice "special occasion" french restaurant you have to slouch in your chair after for 6 hours?

I know that everyone maintains variety is the best for this diet, so you are right in that it should be too often. I think I've seen some of them safe offal at least once a week. We did get some tripe and they love it, I was really suprised that Nitro would take to it, after all he hates peanut butter. We lucked out as a friend picked it up and it comes in 1 lb tubs frozen, no mess for us.

Just remember that heart does not count as an organ meat... It's a muscle meat (so is tounge). So you still need to include other organ meats in thier diets.

Of course it is! (I'm slapping myself in the head as we speak). Okay, I knew the heart was a muscle, but for some reason I lumped it together with organ meat in this instance. Thanks for the wake up!
I don't think I'm going to feed it again too soon, they both got soft stools from it. I gave them some pumpkin, but Drum didn't like it and only took a tiny lick.
