I know that rawhide bones are bad for dogs, but are rawhide strips just as bad- just curious.

There are a lot of chemicals in those things to preserve them. We give our dogs raw beef bones, but scoop out as much marrow as possible because one of our tends to get diarrhea from that. They love to chew them and the raw bones don't splinter. Take them away and replace with fresh after two weeks or so.

where do you get those type of bones? From the butcher?-can i get them at the grocery store- what specifically do you ask for?

We get them from a butcher -- he keeps a large supply frozen. We usually buy the shank bones -- if they're real long my hubby cuts them in half. You can usually buy different sizes, but if you call a butcher shop and request a certain size, they'll usually cut them for you. I've also seen some nice, raw bones at our regular supermarket -- packaged as "soup bones." Some are real fatty, though, so I cut that off. Those are usually the knuckle bones (we scoop as much marrow as we can out of those, too).
