a little bit of peanut butter seems to do wonders! but you have to put in the small opening.. otherwise they just lick/suck it out in minutes!!

i use anything i can freeze LOL

someone on here suggested a mix of peanut butter, banana and uncooked oats and freeze it. my 2 love it and it takes about an hour for them to go through it.

also, put peanut butter in the small hole and then fill with water and soft kibble and freeze.

I don't use peanut butter too much, it gave my puppy the runs! I do use mashed bananas, 100%pure pumpkin filling, apples, oatmeal, if I have a little left over steak (this is a HUGE treat in my house!), broken apart rice cakes, cheerios.
I freeze the bananas and pumpkin. It takes longer to get through.

i bought vitamin enriched Kong Butter at petsmart and she loves it!! I was also told by the vet to not over do it on the pnut butter bc of the high protein?!

I just tried this today for Tyson's lunchtime Kong.

3-4 small peanut butter biscuits (or kibble rolled in a little peanut butter)
3 tablespoons applesauce

I poured a little bit of applesuace in to cover the small hole, plugged it with my finger and then put the biscuits inside. Then, I poured the rest of the applesauce in. I stood the kong upside down in a plastic cup for a few hours until the applesauce was frozen through and then I gave it to him. It was a hit!!!!!!! He kept licking it long after it was empty.

Something else I did yesterday for my golden retriever was to fill the small hole with peanut butter, then I broke some dog biscuits and mixed it with banana, and mushed up a little piece of leftover banana and mixed that with applesauce. I froze it and she had a nice time getting her dog-sicle out of the kong. :) I'm freezing it now everyday since it's so hot. They seem to love it when it's frozen.

It was a big hit. If your dogs like little pieces of apple, they'll love frozen applesauce. It's like a popsicle!

I love Kongs! What I do is take my dog's portion of food for the day, mix it up with something sticky (canned food, applesauce, potatoes, etc), mix, stuff into different Kongs, freeze over night, then give the next day!

However, if your dog isn't use to working so hard at a Kong (yet), you might want to forget the freezing part.

Enjoy!

you let them have it in the house? I noticed the more she licks at it it will come out of the smaller hole and onto the carpet.... we have the big one

I give the kong inside if it only has biscuits and dry food. When I mix it with applesauce, canned food, peanut butter, etc, I give it to him in the back porch or in the garage.

I have 6 different kongs... I fill them all at the same time and freeze them. I use bananas, carrots, celery, green beans, peas, apples ... whatever we happen to have, then I close off the ends with peanut butter. She gets one every day when I leave to go to work. We have one old bedding on the floor that is used for the kongs. When I open the freezer, she runs to her place and has her kong there, and the mess stays there. It's worked out great !

Since I have Rubi on a hypoallergenic diet (we're trying to figure out what she's allergic to, if anything) I have to use dry kibble....but i mix it in yogurt and freeze it. She gets it in the afternoon after her walk. Oh, because the yogurt is white and i have dark carpets, she gets the frozen kong in her crate or outside.

Does Rubi's food have a canned version as well??? If not, you can also take the dry, soak it in water, mush up, and then stuff, freeze. Just a thought. Oh, yes, I let my dog eat it on the carpet (he stays in my bedroom). I just clean it up any mess.

That's true, I could get the canned version of her food and freeze that. Thanks for the suggestion.

Last night was the first night I tried stuffing the kong and freezing it for Dakota. The breeder gave us a recipe but I just took some of her kibble and stuffed it into the kong, then took some cream cheese to close off the big hole and froze it. My husband put her in the crate for bed last night and she wouldnt even pay attention to him for a second so he could say goodnight. She went crazy for it and we are doing the same thing tonight.

I tried to close it off with yogurt instead of cream cheese the night before and that was a mess (and Dakota didnt like it as much). The cream cheese though was the key!

Try these they are great. Another great idea is to freeze beef broth into ice cube trays for a little treat on the hot days.

Banana Rama
Fresh banana
2 tbs wheat germ
1 tbs plain yogurt (can use your pet’s favorite as well)
In a bowl, mash up banana. Then add wheat germ and yogurt. Mash all ingredients together and use spoon to add to Kong.
Freeze for 4 hours. makes 1 serving for Medium Kong. Double for every Kong size that is bigger.

Cheesy Dental Kong Delight
3 slices of your pet’s favorite cheese
A very simple and creative way to make any pet drool in delight.
Just place the 3 slices of cheese directly onto the grooves of your pet’s Dental Kong (if your model has rope - make sure cheese does not get onto it).
Melt in microwave for 20 to 30 seconds. Give to pet after it cools.

Philly Steak
Steak scrapes
1 ounce cream cheese
Place lace small scapes of the steak inside Kong Toy. Spread cream cheese in large hole to hold scrapes.

Fruit Salad
Grapes, apples and carrot chunks
1/4 th of a banana
Place grapes, apples and carrots in Kong Toy. Mush banana in large hole to hold fruit in place.
You can include other fruits and veggies: Orange slices, Peach and/or nectarine chunks, Celery sticks, Broccoli and/or cauliflower, Tomato and black olive mixture.

Veggie Kong Omelet
1 egg
Your choice of shredded cheese
Any vegetable that your pet may like
Scramble egg and fold in vegetables. Put in Kong Toy.
Sprinkle some cheese over the top and microwave for about 20 seconds.
Cool thoroughly before giving to dog.

Mac ‘N Cheese
Leftover macaroni and cheese
Small cube of Velveeta
Melt Velveeta in microwave until gooey. Add Mac ‘n cheese to Kong Toy. Pour heated Velveeta into Kong.
Make sure it ha cooled before giving to your pet.

Aunt Jeannie’s Archeology Kong - Famous Recipe
(for the advanced dogs)
Layer 1: (deepest): Roasted, unsalted cashews, Raisins, Freeze-dried liver bits
Layer 2: Dog kibble, cookies or liver biscotti, Cherrios, Sugar free, salt-free
peanut butter, Dried banana chips, apples and apricots
Layer 3: Carrot sticks, Turkey or leftover.

Kong on a Rope - Famous Recipe
This is advanced work for your dog.
Take the rope, pull it through the Kong Toy and knot it.
Hang this upside down from a tree, deck or post. The small hole should be facing the ground.
Take the kibble and fill the Kong Toy. Make the toy hang just low enough that it is out of your dog’s reach.
The dog will spend hours trying to retrieve the kibble from the Kong Toy. At the end of the day, take the remaining kibble and give to your pet as a reward.

Frozen Jerky Pops
Peanut Butter
Bouillon
Jerky Strips
Water
Muffin Tin
Smear a small amount of peanut butter over small hole in our Kong Toy. Fill the cool water and add a pinch of bouillon. Place a Jerky Stick inside Kong Toy and freeze.
This also can be put (once frozen) in a children’s size swimming pool for a fun day of fishing for your pet.

some dogs loves turkey. chicken or marrow bites mixed with slightly moistened food nuggets frozen inside there Kong.

now those sound fun!!!

i'm making chicken in the crockpot as part of dinner tonight so i'm going to put peanut butter in the bottom hole of the kong to close it and then fill it with some left over chicken and the chicken broth and freeze it over night. i'm betting they will love it.

Can a Kong hold up to a power chewer?

I have a hound mix who is part beaver, I swear she could eat a tree. I gave Nikki, our little Labbie mix, a large puppy Kong and Cassie ATE the small end off it. Fortunately it came out in the wash, but I was worried for a day. Cassie has a food obscession, so I'm worried that she will eat even one of the big ones.

I had the same problem with our lab and the pitbull upstairs... Two minutes with Mika's red kong and it burst open... We had two red kongs and a blue one... I think we're going to upgrade to black now. He also stole her beef chews and killed her chewy dumbell. But he lets her chew his ears so they're even.

We bought a puppy kong for large breeds and it was a total flop! I had to convince my husband that it was worth the $10 and that Jack would love it.. and he hates it!!

I will have to try some of these recipes and give this kong another go. I tried what the instructions say - plug one end up with PB and freeze chicken broth but Jack still prefers my hands and toes!!

I bought the Kong Stuffing from dog.com. It comes in a can like Easy Cheese so it is really easy to put in the Kong. They have all kinds of different flavors. Boyden really like the peanut butter.

My dog destroyed the first kong in minutes flat. I've considered getting the heavy duty black one, but it's really expensive and I'm wondering if it will be a flash in the pan again. The first one was the red medium one, guess that was a mistake for my power chewer!

All these recipes sound so fun! She would love them!

Molly has destroyed 2 black kongs in about 10 minutes each. I'm always jealous of people who can give their dogs kongs!

So I have started to look into raw diets for Bentley and am still in the research phase of getting all the info but I was reading about the "veggie glop" as they call it that many put in with the raw meat that is fed, and started to think... Humm sound like it would be easy enough to make up and then freeze in a kong for Bents... SO I made sone today with what I had in the fridge, (carrots, some lettuce, parsley..) and then I added some kibble in and mixed it up in my blender with a little water and then put in in his kong and Volia! He Love it!

My dogs don't care for the Kongs themselves. They just like the insides out and leave the Kong be. I would be better off saving the money and filling a plastic bottle with stuff and letting them play with that. At least they would chew on the bottle then. DUH!

I thought grapes were a NO NO? and were toxic to dogs? I think I would use a blueberries instead of grapes...
Great ideas though... thanks

Bailey LOVES her Kong and it buys me an hour of peace :D I have been plugging the little hole with a baby carrot and she loves working on that but it keep it plugged even after it starts to thaw. I also have been using the applesauce (natural unsweetened)with some broken dog biscuits and then a layer of low fat vanilla yogurt capped with a big dog biscuit in the whole with the yogurt drizzled around the opening, then freeze overnight. She loves them so much I have to make it after she goes in her crate for the night. Bailey also knows whe can only have Kong on her place or on the deck cause it can get messy !!
