Im the proud owner of a new lab puppy :) and I was about to register him, but have a question. The name....We call him "Riley", but I have heard where you keep the same start of a name from the dad, etc. His dads name was Crumplers Modo Ice and Gpas name Marks-A-Lot Cocaine Ice. However, both those dogs are from breeders I believe and Im definetly not a breeder. I know it probably doesnt matter....but I just thought that I would get other peoples opinion. THANK YOU!

You can name your pup whatever you like/fits his personality. If you are looking for a registered name to compliment is pedigree that can be a lot of fun. His call name you can keep as Riley.

For instance, my yellow is Melody but her registered name is Song Of My Heart. A lot of times the registered name is a combination of both the sire and dam's names.

If he was a she, Honey Ice would be a great name. I see Rocket and Rambling showing up in several names. How about Rambling Rocket - call name Riley, Rocket or Rocky. You get the drift of how my mind is going, play with the names. Then again, you can go any way you want.

Does the breeder (the owner of the dam at the time of whelping) have a kennel name? If so, it's usually customary and appropriate to begin the registered name of a dog with the breeder's kennel name.

For example, Piper was bred by Hayshaker Labradors, therefore her registered name is Hayshaker's Kinderwood Charmed One.

My father in law came up with this one....its just fun I guess....our last name is Shoemaker and he so badly wants a dog named Plano Shoemaker (get it? Plain Ol Shoemaker) So we thought Plano "RILEY" Shoemaker.....would that be dumb?

Some breeders require the kennel name to be at the front...then usually it's customary to have a name that makes sense of the call name...But if the breeder doesn't care, then you could use your last name.

Rookie's registered name is:

Endeavor Put Me In Coach. His call name is Rookie. The breeder's name is Endeavor...and the put me in coach is the insinuation to the Rookie part.

Riley means a luxurious or carefree existence. So my recommendation would be Shoemaker's Carefree Existence. Call name Riley. Or you could use Shoemaker's Living the Life of Riley. Which would mean the same thing.

But if you like Plano Shoemaker...that's fine too...I'm personally not a huge fan, but it's your dog. :-)

You don't even need to include the call name in the registered name. If you like Plano Shoemaker, use that. You can still call him Riley. None of mine have call names that are in their registered names.
