My sister has just contacted me regarding her 1 year old male yellow lab. Jack is a beautiful purebred lab that has had a few medical problems since my sister purchased him as a puppy. My sister and her family are NOT the best dog owners in the world and really just want a cute puppy to turn into an obedient dog all by itself. I have worked with animals for years in vet clinics, rescues, etc. After trying to discourage her from getting a dog, she purchased a puppy last year without doing any research on a breeder and without considering adopting an older dog. Jack came from what I believe to be a puppy mill near Lancaster PA. Jack’s main medical problems are allergies. He suffers from chronic ear infections and sensitive skin. Since Jack was a puppy, he had been treated by a vet that I personally have no faith in and who constantly brushed off Jack’s problems. Since the first of the year, I have been monitoring Jack’s ear infections getting progressively worse. I convinced my sister to trade in the Old Roy’s dog food for Wellness Fish & Potato, hoping it might relieve some of his problems. When I visited her a month ago, Jack had the most severe bacterial ear infection I have ever seen, even his eye was red from the beginnings of a staff infection. I called a better animal clinic and insisted that she take him immediately. The vet confirmed that he indeed had a very severe bacterial infection, prescribed some meds and put him on a strict diet to determine what his allergies are. If the diet didn’t work, she wanted to perform bloodwork to determine the cause of the allergies for about $500. She also told my sister that he might have environmental allergies. I stressed the importance of getting the dog out of the garage to my sister once we left the clinic. Jack is kept in a cage in their garage whenever they leave the house or can’t deal with his energetic behavior in the house. Let’s just say that the garage and the cage have not been cleaned in months and I was concerned that the dirt could be aggravating the condition.

Problem #2 is that Jack has only had very basic training. He does not know how to walk on a leash. He knows the sit and stay commands by not much else. He is such a sweet and loving, loyal dog that it breaks my heart to see him being punished for his minor out of control, typical puppy destructive behavior when he simply has never been taught anything. He his housebroken but will chew, jump, bark and do most typical puppy behavior.

Last week, my sister called me to say that she has had enough and they cannot afford any more care for Jack. His behaviors have been getting more out of control by stealing food off the counters and out of the trash and he is still suffering from allergies. She has stated that the do not have the money to spend on his food and certainly can’t afford any more vet care. She asked if I could help her find a new home for Jack. As much as I would love to bring Jack into my home, my husband and I have already have a rescued Boston Terrier that has emotional issues and he would never allow another dog into our home. I am heartbroken by the whole situation. Now, I simply want to do what is best for Jack and help him find a loving home that will care for him the way he deserves to be cared for. I am concerned that the longer it takes to find Jack a home, the longer his allergies will be left untreated and my sister my change her mind about giving him up. If she can’t find a home, she may give the dog to my father who has less dog knowledge than she does. My father is a strict disciplinarian that believes in beating a dog into submission. My father has never kept a dog in the house for more than a year where it then gets kicked outside to live the rest of its life in a kennel. I have contacted a few rescue groups in eastern PA and NJ but most are over worked with shelter dogs and are not able to help with an owner surrender. Tonight, my sister called and is getting very impatient since I have not been able to get him into foster fast enough. She is now thinking of dropping him off at the shelter.

Please, please help me find a home for Jack. If there is anyway to get him into a foster home he might have a chance to turn his behavior issues around. My sister lives in Bucks County PA. If you know of any other rescues in the area, please let me know. You can see some pictures of Jack on my website, www.abfabpetnanny.com/gallery (scroll past my boston terrier and cat to see Jack's pics).

Thank you,
Kelly Burket

Thanks. Brookline can't take him into foster as an owner surrender. I already have an email out to SPARRO and I will try to contact the Lake Erie rescue. If I didn't live in a condo and if I didn't already have by BT with dog aggression, I would take him but I know it would never work. When I introduced my dog to Jack, my little 24 pound terrier lunged for his throat. Poor Jack just thought he was playing.

Jack is such a beautiful dog! I wish that I would have a bigger home so that I could give Jack the home he deserves. I hope that you find someone to love him like he deserves.

WOW!!! You guys are the best! I posted this two and half hours ago. Jack now has a rescue group based through a vet clinic that has offered to help him. Jack will be getting the medical care that he needs and will find a wonderful, loving home. Thank you all so much for jumping to assist me in finding Jack the proper care that he deserves. Whoever adopts Jack will be getting a loyal dog that will be their best friend for life! I have been sick about this for a week since my sister first asked me to find him a home. I am actually sitting here crying because I am so relieved!

Thank you again!!!

Another user emailed their vet at Mills Pond Vet Clinic in Quakertown (eastern PA). They operate a rescue that rehomes about 50 animals a year. They have offered to runs the allergy tests and give him the medical care that he needs as well as obedience training before adopting him out. Jack will live at the clinic for now with a few other rescue dogs with 8 acres to play.

Kelly,

I'm sure we'll stay intouch regarding Jack. Miriam (Original2labcru) and I both go to Mill Pond with our dogs and also I'm hoping, if all goes well, to get Jack into the beginner obedience class that I help out in. My idea is to have my daughter Shannon take him thru. She would LOVE it (I already ran it by her - haha). This way...I can keep you up-to-date on his progress. We'll make him into one great dog for a family to have. You'll love Mill Pond and feel confident that he'll be well taken care of.

Thanks and I hope all goes to plan. It all hinges on whether Jack will be showing up at Mill Pond in the next day or so and I can get in contact with my friend over there who is in charge of all this. Miriam brought my attention to this and I'm so glad she did. I feel really good that I'm FINALLY able to help out with a dog from this board - haha

I'll post updates to what is going on and maybe some pics too. :)

Thanks again everyone. We are trying to get jack to the clinic today. My sister said that his ear is acting up again. I have not seen Jack for a while but the last time she told me that it was "acting up" it was really severe.

Karen, watch out because Shannon might fall in love with him! Jack loves girls. He will probably latch on to her pretty quickly. My heart is breaking for this dog but I feel so much better knowing the people who will be with him while he goes through this transition. Keep me posted on his progress and I want to see pictures of him!

I am so angry with my sister right now for this whole mess. It has been difficult for the last year since she first bought Jack but how much can you say to your older sister when you're whole family thinks you're the one who's nuts for treating your dog like a child, buying $50 food, and letting your dog sleep in bed. I just pray that she has learned her lesson and will NOT get another dog again. I have tried to keep my mouth shut because I don't want to make her mad at me and not let me help Jack. I feel like he's more my dog than her's since I am the only one that has worried about him from the beginning.

This board has the most amazing, caring, sympathetic and heartfelt people in the world on it.

It's absolutely wonderful that Karen is pulling strings to foster Jack. I'm sure that he will be loved finally! You're an angel Karen by way of Miriam!

This is just too cool!

Well...Jack is now spending his first night at Mill Pond. It broke my heart to leave him there but it went really well. My sister signed him over to me without any problems, and the staff at the clinic just loves him! He will have the needed allergy testing done and will start obedience training. I pray that he will find a new forever home and get all the love and attention that he deserves. He is going to make someone a very happy dog owner.

Hi Karen,

I called the clinic today to see how Jack is doing but Nancy wasn't there so I couldn't get too much info. I also tried to email you back but I have having some issues with my email. I'm glad to hear that the staff likes him so much and he seems to be doing well with the other dogs. Keep me posted!

Lisa, jackadog has contacted Mill Pond where jack was taken. He will be there at least a month to get healthy and go thru some training, hopefully with Kbob's daughter. There has also been a lot of interest in him at Mill Pond....one way or the other, this boy will ahve a home. Karen said he was wonderful! I haven't gone up to see him yet.

I received an email from Mill Pond today. Jack is doing great! They are running the necessacary tests to determine what he is allergic to and he has made so many doggie friends. The staff loves him and he seems to have become best buds with a Husky that is in the doggie daycare at the clinic. There is already a growing number of people that are interested in adopting him so if there is anyone here that would like to meet him, get up there quickly!! You guys have answered my prayers and Jack is now in a fantastic environment. Thank you to everyone on the board!!!

Hi and sorry I haven't been on much lately. Been helping my brother and sis-in-law with the move into their new house. These past 3 days have reminded me that I NEVER want to move - LOL Anyway, my husband was over at Mill Pond today buying some dog food and checked in to see how Jack is doing. He is doing well and is being treated for his ear infections. My dd, Shannon, is really hoping to start him with his obedience training next week. He is a love-bug. :)

Kbob
04-03-2005, 04:18 PM
nope, I'm not adopting him. There was supposed to be a chance I would foster him but Cole was not too nice to Jack and that was on neutral territory. I can only imagine what it would be like if we got him into the house.
