LuvOldLabs 02-19-2009, 11:52 AM OMG- that gash on his back leg is awful. I have a call into the shelter to get some additional information. The man I spoke with was nice, but told me I needed to speak to the shelter manager. She will be available in three hours and I will call back and post what I find out about him

Robinpow 03-16-2009, 05:12 PM The boy is safe and sound.... I'm going to pour a nice glass of wine and poor a bubble bath.
He loves to ride, as sweet candy, full of kisses, much prettier than the photos.... However.
Hay you know there is always going to be a 'however' when things runs that good. The boy has a few little issues we will be working on. Like we don't try to bite anyone that approaches the jeep. We don't try to jump out of jeep and chew on the onlookers. We don't growl at people we don't know who come in/out a doors.
Trust me there will be more to this story tomorrow, but I'm ready to remove dog fur from my body, sit for about 5 minutes and take a very long nap. ;-)
BTW, he is now 40 lbs more than the original photos
JodiB74 03-16-2009, 05:21 PM He is a handsome fella. Thanks so much for saving this guy. I hope everything goes well with him. You're an angel.
Robinpow 03-17-2009, 09:19 AM A bit of rest, I'm a conscious human again. ;-)
Now for the rest of the story....
Yeller, was living in very poor conditions with 9 other labs. In house with the walls, furniture and most everything else well chewed. Floors covered in feces. Food was just tossed in the the window. Things were so bad the animals were removed.
From here there are a few missing details... sorry I didn't ask about the other 9 (but I will). We know he was put in the shelter, and that someone stepped up to the plate and paid for this boy to be treated for HW, and to spend the following 3 weeks at the vets office resting. Yes there is an unnamed angel out there!
Yesterday, it was a double edge sword for the vet's office. Happy that Yeller, was going to find a good home, but several of them had become so attached to the boy... one had tears flowing down her face. Before leaving they did one last role call... "can't have 8 already", "can't full house" and the one that hurting the most... "can't, I'm moving to a place that doesn't allow". They loved him enough to let him go, so he would have a better place to live.
The one who was most affected, asked if she could take him out to the jeep... for one last good-bye.
I opened up the back of the jeep, and Yeller jumped in like a pro. After getting in, he turned round and started giving his old friend a good face washing of kisses, and she gave him a last hug.
It was now time to leave.
This trip I had taken my mother with me. A little human company for the road trip, and she had never gone on any type of rescue run or transport. Yeller checked out the back of the jeep, then jumped to the middle seat and decided that the middle was much more comfy. Every one was in there place and down the road we went. Yeller quickly settled in and went to sleep. All was going great, until....
It was time to fill up the gas tank. I pulled up to the pump, and Yeller woke up, and popped his head up to look and see what was going on. This is pretty much a normal thing, didn't give it a second thought. Then the moment my hand touched the door handle, he flew over the seat, with his rear on my mother's lap, that strong lab tail slapping my mother face so hard that her glasses flew into the windshield. He's so big that the front half of his rear and rear feet were on the console, crushing my coffee cup as flat as a pancake. and the rest was him was on me.
No problem, figure I would just give him a few minutes to settle down, put him back where he belonged and go and fill up the car. So much for plans... Yeller spotted a man getting out of the pick-up truck on the other side of the pumps, and went crazy! Barking, growling and ready to have the man for lunch. The man looked, smiled and said, "Beautiful dog you have." After a few minutes, Yeller stared to settle back down... then came a van with two men... and he got real upset. By now it was obvious, I couldn't risk opening the door. Even with the restraints, I was afraid the would break loose.
The first man who was barked at, must be a lab lover. He never showed any fear, and was kind enough to take my credit card through the one inch opening in my window, and filled up my tank for me. Now with a full tank, and everyone outside gone... Yeller returned to his seat, mom found her glasses, and I just looked at my poor 1" tall coffee cup, which was now also full of fur.... and off we were for the last leg of the trip.
Once we got home, knowing he might have issues with either trucks & vans or men. I got a good grip on the leash and headed for the backyard. No problems, just another happy lab. Until my aunt came to the door of the house, the hackles went back up. She backed up and he calmed back down. Then hubby came out, repeat of the behavior.
It took a little time and effort, but before long, Yeller had figured out that not all men were bad, and was loving on DH.
The quick snapshots I took, don't do the boy justice. He has one of the most beautiful coats, I've seen on any dog. The fur is so soft, you can't help but want to run your fingers through it. Also this is no small dog, as labs go he's about at big as they get structure wise. He's about 70 pounds and still needs to fill out a bit. We also found out that his age is between 18 months and 2 yr.
As to behavior, don't think there is a thing there that a little time, social interaction and training won't solve. This boy is going to make someone a great family member!
Also there has been a vote, we all agree ol Yeller, just isn't the right name. His new name is Marshall.
Buddy's Mama 03-17-2009, 09:58 AM Robin, you are a great storyteller! I laughed out loud at this rescue tale. Marshall is a beauty!! He was in a really horrible situation, and I am just so grateful that he had the opportunity to fall into the right hands. The vet staff sounded wonderful--he touched a lot of hearts. Thank you for getting him and caring for him and for sharing his story with us. He couldn't be in better hands.
Bless you!
Robinpow 03-17-2009, 10:34 AM Update part 2:
Just spoke to TX, and found out about the other nine dogs.
Three were PTS, because they were too aggressive.
Two, were adopted out.
The rest including Marshall, are now in the rescue system.
Marshall was the last to go, because of his medical issues. When pulled, he was underweight, had a temp, and injuries from the other dogs. He went straight to the vet, where it ends up he has been since he was removed, until yesterday.
It was so bad, the local newspaper in Marshall did a story about it. The woman was arrested!

Sad story, but at least it has a happy ending.
Ken123 03-26-2009, 07:53 AM Marshal aka Ol' Yeller, is adapting to his foster home and doing just fine.
He is gaining a little over a pound a day (weighed last Monday at 99.8 lbs.)
He is starving for humane contact and gets a belly rub every day. He is learning not to jump up on you for love when approached.
He is also very protective and will make a wonderful companion to whomever, adopts him.
Carrelabs 06-04-2009, 01:29 AM Marshall aka Ol' Yellar flew out here to me last Friday 5/29/09. I picked him up at the San Francisco airport with another little black lab mix (but she is another story) Marshall is so big he filled a size #700 crate all up. I could hear his tail thumping against the crate as I went out to the cargo bay to get him out. His tail hasnt stopped wagging since! Marshall has been in foster care with Robin and her husband Ken these past few months. He recieved excellent care and lots of love as Ken has turned him into a big mush puppy. He is what I call just a big ole "Goober" lab. (and I am sure some of you on here know exactly what I mean!) Not a mean bone in his body and happy just to get some attention.
On the way back to Willits (home) I was meeting up with one of my adopters Jeff who was returning a 1 year old yellow boy to me as he was just a bit too much dog for what Jeff was looking for. Jeff is an ER doctor and works long hours a few days a week so his parents go over and take care of Jeff's dogs and the 1 year old was just a too much dog for them. Long story short Jeff met Marshall and fell in love and the rest is history. Marshall is doing well with Jeff and learning how to be a house dog. He has a younger black lab mix sister to play with and they are doing great together. Marshall met the parents and won them over with his sweetness and mellow disposition. Happy ending to this poor boy who came from such a sorry situation. He will never worry about that again!
