Helloooo down there. Aren't I cute? My name is Sabrina. I am a 2 year old Lab who needs a forever family to love me. My previous family dumped me at the shelter and left. Nice huh? I suppose they could have just kicked me out into the street, so I should be grateful for small favors. I am a wonderful girl who apparently likes to survey my world from on-high! I do know how to entertain myself and others. Come see me at the shelter or contact them about me. The shelter is open 7 days a week. Daily hours are 10-3, M/W hours are 10-6. Out of state adoptions are welcomed. Adoption applications are available on line at www.bcarl.org. Woof.
This pet is up to date with routine shots.

Hailey's Mom 02-18-2009, 08:25 PM Oh my she certainly has some mtn goat somewhere in there, :) . Hopefully, her skills will help grab the attention of adopters, she looks like a real sweet girl.
Fowl Play 02-18-2009, 08:52 PM I don't mean to take this off topic, but is it typical for shelters to tie dogs out with chains? I get outdoor kennels, but I've never seen them tied out with a chain.
Buddy's Mama 02-18-2009, 08:58 PM Unfortunately...yes. Just about all of them around here.
Lovemylabby 02-18-2009, 09:01 PM Those pictures do not look hilarious to me....they are very sad and upsetting.
To see dogs chained like that....:(:(:( it's awful.
Looks like another Lab in the backgound?
Buddy's Mama 02-18-2009, 09:04 PM Oh dear, I would not ever mean to imply that it was funny. It is awful. I'm sorry if I worded that inappropriately. There are many dogs tied out at this shelter. I could not find the other one in the picture.
KellyinCA 02-18-2009, 09:58 PM I searched the site for the other lab in the picture too and could not find him/her they look sweet as well. I never know they chained them like that, really :(
But the roof climbing antics could catch someone's eye hopefully.
This shelter seems very out of state adoption friendly I was searching and their January dog of the month is in MA. That is good to know...
SablesMom 02-19-2009, 05:22 AM She is Adorable!
SablesMom 02-19-2009, 05:55 AM Elaina, do U know the shelter mgr or vol's there?
can U assist a rescue who would like to secure her.... check your pm.
miskeira 02-19-2009, 06:16 AM E-mailed the sheter about Sabrina saying that Adopt A Lab can take her. Haven't heard back yet.
Fowl Play 02-19-2009, 06:55 AM Unfortunately...yes. Just about all of them around here.
How sad:(. Thanks for answering my question.
Buddy's Mama 02-19-2009, 07:27 AM Susan, you guys are a Godsend! Truly, a Godsend. I am going to see if I can find someone close. There used to be a regular on PF that lived near and helped with the shelter. I will see what I can do. Let us know what you hear back from the shelter. Sabrina needs to get out of the cold--it is terribly cold here today!
Bless your heart!
Buddy's Mama 02-19-2009, 08:46 AM Found a good lead!!:
I can pull depending on where transport is going to meet. I'm only going to be home for a short time this weekend, so if they can meet fairly close on I-70, I can do it.
Posted Thu Feb 19, 2009 10:27 am:
I didn't think to ask, but have details been worked out with the shelter yet? They won't release her without being spayed (if she isn't already) and it might take them a couple of days to get her scheduled (I think they usually do it on Wed/Thurs?).
Labs4ME 02-19-2009, 08:49 AM I just called the shelter and sent an email about Sabrina too!!...guess I should have checked here first to see what was happening. Thank goodness it appears she will make it out!
Buddy's Mama 02-19-2009, 09:28 AM Susan,
just sent you an email with contact's # and email addy.
jrosler04 02-19-2009, 10:01 AM can the transporter/puller get her to Zanesville?? i can get up there to get her to help get her to Indiana if need be!
Buddy's Mama 02-19-2009, 10:03 AM Are you kidding?? Are you going to Indy or just taking a little drive, LOL.
I am sure that we could get her to Zanesville.
miskeira 02-19-2009, 11:45 AM I'm going to need someone that can hold on to her until I can get a transport together for her for next weekend That's Patty's intake date. I haven't had a chance to call the shelter yet.
miskeira 02-19-2009, 11:51 AM Just talked with the shelter. They don't normally work with rescues. I have to go on line and fill out the pre-adoption paperwork. I have to e-mail them Adopt A Lab's 501c3 certification papers, vet reference and adoption application. Then, if everything works out, Verna will contact me and let me know if they'll let us rescue Sabrina. There's a $100 pull fee too. No big deal, but this makes me crazy. I don't know why they make it so difficult for a rescue to pull. Would they rather put the dog to sleep. :tapfoot:
miskeira 02-19-2009, 12:00 PM Filled out the pre-adoption paperwork. Sabrina has to be spayed before they let her go anywhere and a $100 pull fee has to be paid. When I get home, I'll be e-mailing all the paperwork they need from Adopt A Lab. Now, have to wait for this person Verna to call me. If we do get her, the transport won't be until next weekend, February 28 or March 1. This is all I can do for now.

I'm shocked. This shelter is full. She is outside and chained. It's beyond cold. They should be thrilled to have a rescue interested in her. I'm so sorry for the hassle. Thank you for everything. Hoping that somehow, some way, this works out. So frustrating!! :(
deeogee1 02-19-2009, 05:25 PM Are you kidding?? Are you going to Indy or just taking a little drive, LOL.
I am sure that we could get her to Zanesville.
If you can get her to Jess, I can meet her and get her to Indy/Muncie.
Kim Sellers 02-19-2009, 06:02 PM Just spoke to Jess, she asked that I post this.
If someone can meet in Indy or along the way, Jess can get her there next Thursday. Paperwork needs to done ASAP, so Jess can pull her to safety.
Jess can also foster. If anyone needs to ask questions, please PM me for Jess' cell number:) Jess is willing to do whatever she can to help out. But please act fast so paperwork is done and Jess can pull!!

great, and I do know that Susan filled out the paperwork,
but I don't think the shelter will respond tonite?
I will call Susan & alert her to yours & Jess's post.
miskeira 02-19-2009, 06:11 PM I did fill out the paperwork and e-mailed Patty's information to them. The girl at the shelter told me it has to go thru a lady by the name of Verna. She would be calling me about it. I don't think I'll hear from her until tomorrow. I can call the shelter first thing in the morning. I'm on vacation tomorrow.
jrosler04 02-19-2009, 08:26 PM I hope this works out!
If the person there who pulls can get her to Zanesville, that would be great, if not, we will happily drive the rest of the way, it is approx 3 hours (each way) but worth it to save this gal!!
I can foster her until next Thursday.
Is indianapolis near you? Or they said if you would need to meet them elsewhere on our way in, let us know! :)
We are driving my boss' vehicle, to pick up a little pitbull who had been used as a bait dog, I told her about this girl, and she said "by all means, transport her" I figured it may make things easier than doing a handoff. Just go straight!
miskeira 02-20-2009, 08:04 AM I hope this works out!

I called the shelter and got the answering machine. I left a lengthy message about Sabrina. I don't know what else to do. I filled out the paperwork and e-mailed Adopt A Lab's paperwork to them. My hands are tied right now. I'm praying that Verna will call me back and we can get this beautiful girl out of the shelter.
I appreciate everything everyone is trying to do to get Sabrina out of there. I'll keep you posted if I get a call. Thanks so much.
Sue
IndyLabMom 02-20-2009, 09:15 AM I wanted to offer my help in transport too if Joanne can't. I will be her back up.
miskeira 02-20-2009, 09:59 AM I wanted to offer my help in transport too if Joanne can't. I will be her back up.
Thanks so much Cathy. Haven't heard anything yet. I'm about to call the shelter again in a minute.
Sue
miskeira 02-20-2009, 10:15 AM Just called the shelter AGAIN!!! Got the answering machine AGAIN!!! It does say on the answering machine that if the dog you want is not available anymore, they will NOT return the call. Left a message anyway and I'm going to e-mail again right now. I feel so helpless right now.
Kim Sellers 02-20-2009, 12:21 PM Got in touch with shelter and still there.
deeogee1 02-20-2009, 12:47 PM Would they be faster to respond if someone just adopted her and then she went to Patty?
deeogee1 02-20-2009, 12:49 PM I hope this works out!

Jess--is the pittie in Indpls? What about meeting in Richmond or someplace and trading the dogs?
miskeira 02-20-2009, 01:39 PM Would they be faster to respond if someone just adopted her and then she went to Patty?
That would be a plan. If she's still there, then why hasn't anyone contacted me on her? Doesn't make any sense. The shelter is closed now. They close a 3 pm.

Well crap!!;) Are they open Sat? It seems like they just don't to be bothered with rescues--which is a real shame.
miskeira 02-20-2009, 01:48 PM Well crap!!;) Are they open Sat? It seems like they just don't to be bothered with rescues--which is a real shame.
They are open 7 days. I'm going to keep calling until I get someone to answer for the phone.
miskeira 02-20-2009, 05:42 PM Still waiting for a call back. :tapfoot:
jrosler04 02-20-2009, 08:23 PM Jess--is the pittie in Indpls? What about meeting in Richmond or someplace and trading the dogs?
I have no clue, I think she is in indpls. I can find out for sure either tomorrow evening or Sunday. (My boss is out of town for the weekend).
but, i am sure that would work out & definately make things easier! This little pittie was abused, and we believe she was used eiter a bait dog or thrown into the fighting ring, and it's just a pup! :(
Hopefully the shelter will cooperate a bit more!!
deeogee1 02-21-2009, 04:05 PM Jess--let us know and if I can pick her here and meet you with Sabrina it would make sense and help everyone out.
Poor baby--and like most places lately, Pitties get all the bad press around here and none of the good stuff mentioned about them. :tapfoot:
Carrelabs 02-21-2009, 04:21 PM Please contact Brianne. br200305@ohio.edu She helped me get 4 dogs out of the shelter about a year ago. Good luck! Margie of CARRE
jrosler04 02-21-2009, 08:54 PM Keep me updated everyone! I hope we can get this set up before the transport! Would love to get Sabrina to safety!
deeogee1, you have it right, people miss the story about the pittie being the therapy dog, yet, let a pittie bite someone & it covers the media!! uggh, I could rant all day, but this thread is for Sabrina!
jrosler04 02-22-2009, 09:12 PM has anyone contacted Brianne?
My rescue contact sent me the name of someone else, but it was deleted, and she is ill, so she hasn't responded.
I forgot to ask my boss about picking up the pittie/exchanging sabrina (too much stuff going on here) so I will try to remember to ask her tomorrow...
Guys, if need be, I will drive all the way up Tuesday & pull her. we can work that out! I don't want her to fall through the cracks due to a difficult shelter!!
Buddy's Mama 02-23-2009, 06:41 AM Thank you, Jess!
Kim Sellers 02-23-2009, 10:52 AM Susan- shelter told me that just sent you an email to get this girl, have they?
miskeira 02-23-2009, 12:00 PM They have. This shelter charges over $125.00 to pull into rescue. According to Verna, the animal must be altered and utd on shots before they let them go. I did ask her if we would be able to get Sabrina altered in rescue and just do the shots. Haven't heard back yet.
deeogee1 02-23-2009, 01:10 PM :donate:I'll donate $25 for this girl. Come on guys--this isn't the first time we have had to collect funds to pull a dog. She's chained:mad:
bestadmom 02-24-2009, 10:12 AM bump
jrosler04 02-24-2009, 10:06 PM So, it doesn't look like this is working out!! This shelter's lack of cooperation is very frusrating!!
That's ok though, let's keep fighting, if I cant get her all the way there Thursday, I will still be happy to get her to Dayton or so on a different day! :)
Carrelabs 02-24-2009, 11:52 PM I will try to get a phone number for Brianne tomorrow. Maybe she can help speed things up. I am sure we can raise the money to get her out. I will donate $25 myself and am sorry I cannot afford more but those mange pups are draining me right now. I dont have Brianne's phone number but know someone who might. I will give them a call in the morning. If someone wants to call me, say about 10 or 11 am PST I can give you the number if I get it. I am at work and cannot get on here at work but my cell phone I can certainly answer :D. 707-972-3760. If I dont answer just leave me a message with your number and I will call you back within the hour. I have one meeting in the morning and cant remember the time.
Margie of CARRE
miskeira 02-25-2009, 09:16 AM Heard back from Verna, the dogs have to be altered before they let them go. No exceptions.
jrosler04 02-25-2009, 01:35 PM Well, I have explained this to my boss, she is calling the shelter to see if they can get this girl done either tomorrow or Friday, and then postponing her trip to IN for Saturday....maybe this will work out after all?!
deeogee1 02-25-2009, 01:38 PM Well, I have explained this to my boss, she is calling the shelter to see if they can get this girl done either tomorrow or Friday, and then postponing her trip to IN for Saturday....maybe this will work out after all?!
Thanks Jess! What about the Indy pup? Are you still picking him up tomorrow or can that wait until Sat?
jrosler04 02-25-2009, 02:32 PM Pup will be waiting until saturday also. There is no set date we have to pick up the pittie. It is safe in a foster home for at least another week until we can get there! :)
Buddy's Mama 02-25-2009, 06:32 PM The girl who offered to pull contacted me tonight. She said that nobody called or emailed her. She is still willing and happy to pull and help Sabrina meet up with a transport. She's a really nice girl...and would like to help. She has experience with this shelter and works with them.
jrosler04 02-26-2009, 01:24 PM Elaina, where is your contact's info?? Has the recieving rescue tried to contact her now??
Buddy's Mama 02-26-2009, 01:35 PM Jess, I can send it to you as well. I sent it along to Susan, and I don't think that she has contacted her yet. I have both her phone and email and she is still happy to help. She can pull Sabrina, prefers the weekends.
Buddy's Mama 02-26-2009, 01:40 PM Jess,
Just pm'd you the info. Perhaps you can get in touch with her and see where she could meet you if this was to pan out with Sabrina.
SablesMom 02-26-2009, 06:55 PM What is happening?
SablesMom 02-27-2009, 04:47 AM any news yet?
It's sad thinking of her chained outside over there...
Buddy's Mama 02-28-2009, 07:48 AM Sabrina needs a home. Every day that passes is another that she is chained up outside. Is there anyone out there who would like to give Sabrina a home of her own. Please consider her today. She is such a beautiful girl.
jrosler04 02-28-2009, 03:08 PM I will call her. I had hoped she could be there. My parents are on thier way back from Indy now. They just picked up the dog!!
I am so frustrated that this hasn't worked out...
Is the rescue still intereted??
deeogee1 02-28-2009, 03:19 PM I will call her. I had hoped she could be there. My parents are on thier way back from Indy now. They just picked up the dog!!

They just picked up the pittie pup? I was waiting to hear from you on transport.
Lovemylabby 02-28-2009, 03:25 PM Heard back from Verna, the dogs have to be altered before they let them go. No exceptions.
I am just seeing this...
Can I help get Sabrina out of there? If she needs to be altered...I will donate toward that...I can pay the Vet directly?
Not sure how this shelter works and why they are making it so difficult to save her...:(
jrosler04 02-28-2009, 03:54 PM Sorry Deeogee, I honestly just found out they were going this morning, My boss just called this AM, and said they could go all the way. IF it works out that we can get sabrina out, I will be happy to get her most of the way to you guys!! I can get to dayton or so!!
jrosler04 02-28-2009, 04:02 PM ok, I called & talked to the person there who pulls. She said the dog obviously DOES need to be spayed (which we already knew)
is the rescue still going to take Sabrina?? (sorry, can't remember names, been a LONG day!)
She said if the rescue HAS been approved, and still want Sabrina, she will get onto the director to try to get the ball rolling. I am still willing to pull/temp. foster/transport!!
I may be going to Cambridge on a dog transport next weekend, so this may work out well! I can take a day off work of my job to drive her to dayton somewhere over there!!
*If* the recieving rescue has been approved, we need to get it set up with the shelter to pull her going for next weekend. The recieving rescue should REALLY call Brianna, Elaina has her number. She is very helpful, and has graciously offered to pull/transport.
Lovemylabby 03-01-2009, 06:45 AM I believe it was "Adopt-a-Lab" that was going to take her?
Again, I will help out in anyway that I can. Please let me know.
Lovemylabby 03-03-2009, 08:18 AM Any updates here? Can't stop thinking about Sabrina...:(:(
Buddy's Mama 03-03-2009, 08:35 AM That makes two of us. I'm really sorry that things did not work out for Sabrina. Maybe someone will see her and adopt her--that is my prayer.
If anyone is interested, I still have someone to pull her and help get her on her way.
Can anyone please give this lovely girl a chance?
deeogee1 03-03-2009, 11:25 AM I thought SUsan was still working on her and ADAL was taking her:confused:
Maybe we should go back to plan B--someone out of state apply to adopt and we'll get her to ADAL that way. I'm still willing to help with transport & so was Jess. And of course I'll still donate for her.

I had offered to help out with her spay...paying the Vet or whatever needs to be done before she can leave.
I hope she is still there...:(
jrosler04 03-03-2009, 03:05 PM Well, we WILL be in Cambridge Saturday, so we can still save this dog.
Anyone want to be the out of state adopter? We can pull her & get her on her way.
The black lab/mastiff mix "blackie" (now named kohl), Goldie (from meigs shelter) and another dog from Meigs will all be going to PA Saturday, and we are doing the first leg of the transport... 3 hours up to Cambridge!
deeogee1 03-04-2009, 09:03 AM I checked with a rescue friend in OH about this shelter. She said they will hold on to any dog that they think they can place for weeks to months before letting a rescue have them.
Can someone with only 1 or dogs apply to adopt her??

:confused: This shelter would rather hold on to a dog, and keep it chained like that for weeks to months, before they would let a rescue take it?
This is horrible...:(

Yes, it stinks. My friend is with a Collie rescue and it even took a long time to get a sick Collie out of there.
Now I see why Susan had such a hard time getting answers.
Additional info after talking to Mike at Happy Labs who read their site closely. This shelter has no intentions of sending any dogs to rescue. the place is run by a rescue & think they can get BIG bucks on adoptions.Who We Are
We are the Belmont County Animal Rescue League. We operate the county's only shelter. We house stray and owner surrendered animals. At any given time, the population of animals in our shelter averages 85-110 canines and 30-45 felines. We offer programs for assistance with having owned animals altered, programs on humane education, and enforce Ohio dog laws according to the O.R.C. Visit our website at www.bcarl.org .
Adopting a friend
Adoption fee is $100.00-$500.00 for all pets, depending on breed, amount of vet care, etc.
Buddy's Mama 03-12-2009, 07:57 PM Just had to give Sabrina a bump.
Carrelabs 03-13-2009, 03:25 AM Please do not give up on this dog. Last year I rescued 4 dogs from this shelter with the help of Brianna. I did not experience at all that they didnt want their dogs out. One of the dogs I got was a beautiful full blooded lab boy that had been in the prison program and was fully trained. What happened with Brianna helping with this girl? Is there a rescue willing to take her or not? Margie of CARRE
Double K 03-13-2009, 07:11 PM :bump: for Sabrina
LadyBuckeye 03-13-2009, 07:25 PM OMG, she looks like my Ava! Please let's get her out!
Buddy's Mama 03-18-2009, 06:23 AM One more time!
rsgrl16 03-18-2009, 06:44 PM Sabrina is still waiting? I thought she was taken care of already.
Buddy's Mama 03-18-2009, 06:49 PM Still waiting.
rsgrl16 03-18-2009, 06:53 PM Sorry to hear that, poor girl...
jrosler04 03-19-2009, 07:18 AM Mustangc posted on Quincy's thread that they are looking for a yellow lab, maybe sabrina would be a good fit??
Buddy's Mama 03-19-2009, 07:35 AM Sabrina is a true gem! She needs out and off the chain...please.
JodiB74 03-20-2009, 12:44 AM Any updates for this girl? Please someone out there help this poor soul. This is so sad.
Kim Sellers 03-20-2009, 09:30 AM Just spoke to shelter.........this girl is still waiting, please help!!
Her time limit is UNKNOWN as they are full!!
LauraNJ 03-20-2009, 09:53 AM Just spoke to shelter.........this girl is still waiting, please help!!
Her time limit is UNKNOWN as they are full!!
Poor Sabrina. It was all arranged, if only the shelter had cooperated, Sabrina would not even be there at this point.
Lets get Sabrina off the chain and into a rescue or home. Anyone interested in taking this girl?
Buddy's Mama 03-20-2009, 09:58 AM I am so heartbroken about this. I see dogs on the PF forums get rescued from there regularly. Sabrina needs out and fast. Spring is here..she wants to be out of the pound!
Kim Sellers 03-20-2009, 09:59 AM They said once they have an app. on her, they will have her spayed and she will be safe!!
WHY OH WHY, do they have to be difficult??
Buddy's Mama 03-20-2009, 10:04 AM Sigh. Again, we have pull help here. We need an adopter or rescue to help. Come on, send in an application for approval today and let's get Sabrina spayed and safe. Anyone?
Buddy's Mama 03-22-2009, 09:42 AM One more time...bump!
I know that there is someone out there for Sabrina. Where are you???
Double K 03-24-2009, 04:37 PM Paws crossed for Sabrina!!
SablesMom 03-27-2009, 08:35 PM I am just seeing this...
Can I help get Sabrina out of there? If she needs to be altered...I will donate toward that...I can pay the Vet directly?
Not sure how this shelter works and why they are making it so difficult to save her...:(
hey just wondering since it is now a month later, did you have
Sabrina altered? thought perhaps you called the vet & did so?
Bump for Sabrina it surely would help her to be more adoptable.
Buddy's Mama 03-27-2009, 08:39 PM Sabrina is still waiting on her chain for someone to love her.
Pull help available. Please....
Buddy's Mama 03-27-2009, 08:39 PM She can be spayed when she is spoken for...
Lovemylabby 03-27-2009, 08:49 PM She can be spayed when she is spoken for...
I am very confused as to how this shelter works. I offered to have Sabrina spayed...but I do think the shelter will only make arrangements for her if someone is interested in adopting her..:(
Wasn't there a rescue here on the board that was interested in her? What happened??
Buddy's Mama 03-27-2009, 09:04 PM Yes, I'm almost sure that she must have a commitment before she is altered. Adopt a Lab was interested but that was quite a while ago. I think the paperwork and back and forth got frustrating.
We are fortunate to have pull/transport help at this shelter. We just need to find a place for her to go. Sabrina is one that breaks my heart.
Marie0604 03-27-2009, 09:55 PM Hello,
I just found this forum...I actually came here to post a couple of lab mixes from Belmont Co and found this listing. Has anyone expressed interest in Sabrina lately? I was contacted a while ago by someone who was going to transport for an interested rescue, but I never heard back from her. She said they were having a hard time dealing with the shelter, but unless things have changed, that is pretty unusual. They don't answer the phones (ever), so most communication is done via voicemail, but as long as you are direct and know what you plan on doing before you call, they will work with you. If a dog has rescue commitment and the fees are paid, they will hold a dog as long as they can for transport. It's just the typical Ohio pound--overcrowded, overworked, understaffed, etc.
Anyways, that's beside the point. I was just dropping in to see if any rescues were interested yet. Sabrina is a nice dog, I saw her when I went out a couple of weeks ago.
Buddy's Mama 03-27-2009, 10:05 PM Hey there! I'm the person who contacted you originally when it looked like we had a rescue. I believe that you spoke on the phone with Jess. Sorry about the confusion. I don't want to give up on this girl.
Thank you for helping Voodoo!!!
Marie0604 03-27-2009, 10:06 PM No problem--it looks like a lot of us post here, there and everywhere :)
Buddy's Mama 03-27-2009, 10:08 PM LOL, so true! :) Any word on any of the others who are due to be put down tomorrow?
Marie0604 03-27-2009, 10:20 PM I think it was today, at 4 p.m. I haven't heard anything...I'm not sure who was on the euth list this week, I try to focus on one or two dogs a week b/c I know I can't help them all, kwim? I know that Voo Doo is safe, I heard that Colonel was safe (but that is unconfirmed), it looks like a bunch of dogs were help over but there are a TON of new dogs since the last time I was there (two weeks ago). I'm in love with Violet, the lab/hound mix and Haylee, the boxer/lab mix. I'm going to work on them this week.
Lovemylabby 03-28-2009, 07:34 AM Yes, I'm almost sure that she must have a commitment before she is altered. Adopt a Lab was interested but that was quite a while ago. I think the paperwork and back and forth got frustrating.
We are fortunate to have pull/transport help at this shelter. We just need to find a place for her to go. Sabrina is one that breaks my heart.
Are we sure that Adopt-a-Lab is no longer interested? Can we contact them?
jrosler04 03-28-2009, 08:28 AM if so, my offer for transport still stands...
Lovemylabby 03-29-2009, 12:22 PM Still waiting for a call back. :tapfoot:
I have also put in 2 calls to this shelter...always get the machine and no response back.
I just called again just now and left another message... their voice mail does say if the dog is no longer available, they will not call you back..:(
I only wish someone would call and let us know if Sabrina is still available..I pray that she is.
My offer stills stands to pay for her spay if a rescue or anyone is interested in her.
Marie0604 03-29-2009, 01:13 PM The shelter never answers the phone :) You leave a message and they typically get back to you...I will say that calling a bunch of times for the same dog will just annoy them and make them less likely to return the call. The director works M-F so does not return calls on the weekend (and possibly not on Monday). Patience is definitely a plus when working with them :) Petfinder isn't updated all of the time, but I doubt they would have had her pts if there had been interest from rescue.
Kim Sellers 03-29-2009, 02:19 PM Yikes- I understand patience but this board has been trying to help this dog for 6 wks:(
Marie0604 03-29-2009, 07:18 PM Well, if a rescue has been lined up, I could try calling? They usually get back to me pretty quickly, maybe since I've worked with them a good bit in the past?
bsdamron 03-29-2009, 07:21 PM Does anyone know where St Clairsville is? I could possibly help transport.
PoundDogs 03-29-2009, 07:44 PM St Clairsville is almost to the WV border (next city is Wheeling) along 70. Are you the person who picked up Dante from Guernsey? St. Clairsville is about 45 minutes east of Cambridge.
margeka 03-29-2009, 07:52 PM Any news on this poor baby.
Buddy's Mama 03-29-2009, 08:01 PM Still waiting...
Lovemylabby 03-30-2009, 10:17 AM I have not heard back from this shelter...:(
I looked at their petfinder site and she is still listed.
There seems to be many conflicting opinions on this shelter..some say that it is actually a rescue?
The fact that no one will call back in not very encouraging...perhaps the only way to save Sabrina is if someone is there locally and can physically go to the shelter to inquire. Maybe they are holding on to her because she is very adoptable??
She is really a beautiful dog and it is sad that no rescue is willing to step up for her...:(:(
knine 03-30-2009, 10:20 AM not really sure what the status is here, but i went ahead and sent her to janie
here was her reply ~
Amanda --
Is Sabrina on the lab forum? Is there a OH lab rescue? This is what I can do: if someone local can pull and arrange transport -- provided this girl is good with other dogs -- we could take her.
Just keep me posted!
Thanks!
Janie
Buddy's Mama 03-30-2009, 10:44 AM Amanda, sending you a pm now to pass along to Janie.
Lovemylabby 03-30-2009, 12:44 PM I finally heard back from Verna, the shelter manager.
Sabrina is considered a very "adoptable" dog and is not in danger of being PTS at this time. She is able to go to an adopter that fills out an application and is approved or if that doesn't happen, she is the next dog in line to go into their "Prison Program".
The only dogs that are available for rescue from this shelter are the one that are actually on the "euthanization" list. These are dogs that have been there a long time with no interest in them.
Verna told me that Sabrina is not available for rescue at this time...and only if she were to get on the euthanization list, which is not very likely because she is a candidate for the Prison Program.
I hope this clears up any confusion...(I was very confused myself)...but the good news is that Sabrina is not in any immediate danger.
jrosler04 03-30-2009, 12:47 PM Well, I guess that's good to hear, at least she has a chance & isn't going to die due to lack of help from the shelter!
SablesMom 03-30-2009, 01:21 PM Glad to now read that apparantly the shelter itself atleast is trying for Sabrina.
Maybe in the future they should disclose only avail to adopters it would
help lessen confusion.
Thank you Susan & ADAL for your attempt for her 1st when she was posted
initially.
Buddy's Mama 03-30-2009, 01:28 PM What an odd place. Sabrina has been waiting awhile. Rather than find a home via rescue, she will languish on a chain.
There is a black senior bl. male named Jet at the shelter. He went through the prison program and is back at the shelter where he has been waiting for MONTHS!!! That is not a life for an old boy like him.
Sabrina deserves better than to spend her Spring on a chain...outside.
I'm so sorry for Sabrina as this shelter is not, in any way, doing anything in her best interest.
Strange, strange place....

Wow! poor Jet! and now poor Sabrina!
Lets try to find adopters for both of them :hug:
Buddy's Mama 03-30-2009, 01:40 PM He has a thread on here, too. Cathy contacted the shelter, and they begged her to adopt him. He went through the p.p. and now lives at the shelter. Seemingly forever. What kind of place doesn't want to help their "adoptable" dogs get the heck out the door to make room for others? After all, this is a KILL shelter!! Dogs are PTS ..so why not make room for the less "adoptable" dogs by moving some into rescue so that they can get into loving, screened homes where they can be part of the family? What interests are they serving here?????
Grrrr...grrrr....
KodahBear 03-30-2009, 02:14 PM Grrrr is right.
Kim Sellers 04-09-2009, 04:46 PM still listed
knine 04-09-2009, 04:58 PM Quincy and Janie both expressed interest in helping here. I gave both the contact info for the woman who may be able to help and has worked with the ACO and shelter prior. I know Janie contacted the woman off PF, I don't know what the upshot of that was but Janie lost her 16 y/o lab Ian, her heart dog, who had been steadily declining this past wknd, so I haven't asked her.
If someone can help orchestrate, than possibly they could contact Quincey - this is what she emailed me...
I would love to take the female labby so if somone can figure out a way to spring her from this place let me know!!

Marie0604 04-10-2009, 08:48 PM I'm going to try to get out there tomorrow afternoon to see what Sabrina's status is...I know that there are a few rescues (not 501c3, just people who rescue dogs) that have given the shelter a hard time. Please, please...disagree with their methods amongst yourselves, but please do not call the shelter to complain. This could ruin the chances of any dogs going to rescue.
The staff can be difficult, but they aren't bad people and the dogs are well cared for and they try very hard not to euthanize adoptable dogs.
The easiest way to help Sabrina would be to put in an adoption application on her...You can do it online at www.bcarl.org. Out of state adoptions are allowed.
Double K 04-10-2009, 09:23 PM Application Sent- Sabrina needs out!!
KodahBear 04-10-2009, 09:43 PM I'm with you... how can I help?

Send an application as well- Just maybe one of us will hear from them!! We can sort the details of where she is going later if we can just get her out of there!!
GrafixMuse 04-11-2009, 07:03 AM I just came across Sabrina at another rescue forum. I immediately thought, "Lab on a Roof!" and came back here to look for her. I was surprised to see her post right at the top.
BTW, not much activity for Sabrina at the other board.
Buddy's Mama 04-11-2009, 08:28 AM Thanks, everyone.....here's to hoping that we can get Sabrina out once and for all!!!!!
LadyBuckeye 04-11-2009, 10:03 AM She looks so much like my Ava - pls keep us posted on her status. With DH unemployed I've not been able to send $....I'd love to know more about her personality, etc. I'm not sure if STLRR would consider a dog outside of the Houston area or not, but once we knew I could ask...doesn't hurt!
GrafixMuse 04-12-2009, 05:15 PM Givin' Sabrina a little :bump:
Double K 04-14-2009, 03:46 PM I haven't heard a word on the application. PLEASE someone else send one and let's see if we can get Sabrina out!!
Buddy's Mama 04-14-2009, 03:50 PM This is so incredibly bizzare!!!!!!!!
Double K 04-14-2009, 03:52 PM This is so incredibly bizzare!!!!!!!!
I agree and don't understand why they wouldn't want the dog adopted:confused:
Buddy's Mama 04-14-2009, 03:58 PM She has been waiting for a long time!!
This is a kill shelter--why can't they make ROOM and let Sabrina find a home or rescue??!!!
This just blows my mind!!!
LauraNJ 04-14-2009, 05:37 PM I can't believe Sabrina is still at the shelter??? What is the issue with one of the applications getting approved?
I just don't get why the shelter wouldn't want Sabrina to go to a great home to be loved on instead of chained outside.
knine 04-15-2009, 04:09 PM Janie submitted apps for both Sabrina and Jet and has corresponded with the Vol there. With the exception of the Vol, no one has gotten back to her. It appears that Sabrina is now in the prison program. Still, no one has responded back to her re Jet. Thank you to the Vol who has been most helpful, but it appears the shelter does not wish to respond to inquiries. Despite that, Janie has asked the Vol for the status of Jet if she is able.

I don't get it.
knine 04-15-2009, 04:24 PM Jets listing has been removed. I dont know what that means for this particular shelter. I hope since Janie was interested and put in an app and since he had already completed the prison program he was either rescued or adopted?

Double K 04-17-2009, 05:02 PM Joe of SPARRO agreed to drive down and find out what is up with Sabrina- The only issue is the pull fee can be anywhere from $100 up to $500- Ideas, suggestions!?

Amanda, do you know if the volunteer who responded is the person on PF who posts & says this is such a friendly place and claims that a few rescues pull all the time?
Buddy's Mama 04-17-2009, 05:48 PM Jet entered the prison program and then came back to the chain...:(

A 500.00 pull fee!!!! What kind of shelter is this??!! That is very kind of Joe. It would be nice to see what is going on with her.....nobody can get any answers or even an approved application...
I don't see how any animal gets adopted from there unless someone shows up in person.
Kim Sellers 04-17-2009, 05:55 PM Well she shouldn't be a ton to adopt as they haven't done much with her yet. I am sure THEY want thier vetting fees back.
Joe couldn't go now until next week but she still needs somewhere to go even if he could pull her. But don't they make you spay before they leave the shelter? Just asking because even if he drove there, I don't think they'd let him take her same day.
nick_charles 04-17-2009, 06:02 PM What a sheltter wanting up to 500.00 does the website say that?
It's right on their adoption fee page:
"Adoption fee is $100.00-$500.00 for all pets, depending on breed, amount of vet care, etc."
I can only imagine how many potential adopters that drives off!

Kim,
You just gave me an idea. We could do a chipin for Sabrina and make the fee a non-issue. I would be willing to donate to see this girl free.
Kim Sellers 04-17-2009, 06:13 PM But who is going to take her even if her fees get covered?

You got me there Kim. Bless her heart, I just want her safe and happy.

You know she can come here until I can work something else out!
Kim Sellers 04-17-2009, 06:36 PM How sweet of you, Nell:)
Mitzi's Mom 04-17-2009, 06:51 PM Nell - you are amazing!!!
knine 04-17-2009, 07:07 PM Amanda, do you know if the volunteer who responded is the person on PF who posts & says this is such a friendly place and claims that a few rescues pull all the time?
yes, she was very responsive to janie, trying to get her info on jet and sabrina, set up transport et al, but the shelter never responded to janies apps - so basically hands tied ~
Kim Sellers 04-17-2009, 07:09 PM Anybody live near this shelter?
IndyLabMom 04-17-2009, 07:17 PM Check out post #126, this person seems to live close by.....don't know if they are willing to help.
Kim Sellers 04-17-2009, 07:20 PM Thanks Cathy........sent her a PM to see if she checked on Sabrina!!
Buddy's Mama 04-17-2009, 11:04 PM She is the person who I originally contacted back in the first few pages when ADAL was interested. I had asked her if she could pull Sabrina and she said she would. She was very helpful. I gave her info. to Jess and I know that Jess called her to try to set up a transport. We came to a standstill because the shelter doesn't respond to anyone...:(
knine 04-17-2009, 11:24 PM yes, she was also trying to help janie

Here is an idea. How about whoever has been emailing the shelter, write another email to the shelter about Sabrina and cc the people over the shelter, the county commissioners, etc.
I would say in the email you have cc the commissioners or whoever because you are concerned that the shelter email is not working, you've sent xx amount of emails with no response and that the emails must not be getting through.
Don't make it accusatory, go from the angle that the emails aren't going through and you have rescue set up for Sabrina, have had it set up for months.
At one job I had, where people would choose not to respond, if I copied someone higher in on it, I ended up with the info I needed and people became responsive. Start out super nice though and going from the technical difficulty angle, no one gets upset or defensive because you have given them a legit excuse to begin with.
LauraNJ 04-18-2009, 09:19 AM Here is the web page for the commissioners which has an email link http://www.belcc.com/
Kim Sellers 04-18-2009, 09:20 AM bump for this sweet girl
Mitzi's Mom 04-18-2009, 09:54 AM I just called the shelter number and the message said that if the dog you are calling about is no longer available, they will not return your call. I'm wondering if that is why there is no response on Sabrina. And, although there are postings on other sites that she is available, perhaps this shelter is not good at removing listings after the dog is gone.
Regardless, I left a message about adopting Sabrina and completed an adoption form. I'm very persistant, and will continue to call until I get a response one way or another.
Kim Sellers 04-18-2009, 10:06 AM When I called about her before it was right when the rescue sent their paperwork and she was still there. They even told me rescue sent their paperwork and they were going to follow up and NEVER did:(
LauraNJ 04-18-2009, 10:15 AM When I called about her before it was right when the rescue sent their paperwork and she was still there. They even told me rescue sent their paperwork and they were going to follow up and NEVER did:(
That is why I suggested cc some other people on email. I think if they wanted to place Sabrina, they could have already, many times over it sounds like. At every job, there are the worker bees and the skacker bees. You always hope the worker bees are the ones in charge.
Sometimes people need a gentle nudge :D so that they do the right thing and there is accountability. If someone else gets cc'd at least it may result it a phone call and some questions asking if the shelter responded. If it is someone smart, they'll ask for the response emails to be forwarded to them and they should respond back to the email.
At this point, I don't see Sabrina leaving that shelter unless some other action is taken. It just makes me sad that Sabrina spends her days on a chain when she could have been curled up on a sofa for the winter instead.
Kim Sellers 04-18-2009, 10:19 AM I have been hitting redial for 15mins, all I get is busy!! They probably have it off the hook now:(
And they sure don't answer emails!!
Kim Sellers 04-18-2009, 11:05 AM They have a choc to!!
bestadmom 04-18-2009, 11:24 AM There was a shelter not far from me that hadn't adopted out a dog or cat in years. The person running it was a hoarder, and the conditions were horrid. A group of rescuers started a local campaign on Craigslist and with the County and they were able to get all of the animals removed.
It sounds like this is a similar situation and will need more coercion to make something happen. If your "subtle" emails don't get you anywhere, call the local TV stations. Anyone who has donated to this group should know that their funds are not being used as intended. You can close them down overight if you want to. Just be sure you've got someplace for all the animals to go.
Kim Sellers 04-19-2009, 03:17 PM Verna just called me back.......they are having computer isses and are not getting applications.
She was very nice and I got lots of info. I will start a new thread with info as they do have a black lab who will go on dogs in danger list this week.
BUT Sabrina is in the prison program and is adopted!! She is spayed, etc.
So Sabrina IS SAFE!!
IndyLabMom 04-19-2009, 03:32 PM Finally ! Sabrina is safe! Thanks Kim for trying so hard to find out about her. :)
Buddy's Mama 04-19-2009, 03:36 PM FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best wishes, sweet Sabrina!! On the chain no more...!!!
Mitzi's Mom 04-19-2009, 09:01 PM Great News!!!
Buddy's Mama 04-20-2009, 09:35 AM Okay..not so hasty. We'll wait for a confirmation to officially move this girl to rescued.

Confused- Sabrina - Labrador Retriever Dogs Chat Forum Board - Dogs, Puppies, (http://www.lab-retriever.net/board/confused-sabrina-t7323884.html)
Kim Sellers 04-20-2009, 10:24 AM WOW!! What a place. Just spoke to Carla a volunteer, as Verna was medicating dogs and couldn't come to the phone. I am NOT sure what this place is all about.
Get any info from this person was like pulling teeth.
Sabrina has application and it is in the final stages of approval!!
Mitzi's Mom 04-21-2009, 10:25 AM Get ready for this. Verna just called me. I had left a message last week and sent in my electronic application. Verna told me that Sabrina is spayed and UTD on everything. She's looks like an English Lab and is around 45 -50 lbs. She's was moved over to the prison because they were out of room at the shelter.
If my application was approved, I could adopt Sabrina and make arrangements to pick her up as early as next week! Her adoption fee would be $125.
Verna mentioned that they've been having problems receiving the online applications so I asked Verna to make sure that she had mine. She couldn't find it, so I did one over the phone. She and another person will be reviewing it in the next couple of days and they'll get back to me then. Perhaps I am being naive, but I have a good feeling about this...
Keep your fingers crossed that we can get that pumpkin out of there soon!!! Jess - aren't you close to Belmont? Could you pick her up for me?
KodahBear 04-21-2009, 10:26 AM OMG!!! totally off subject...did you get my email about the lab in NY?
Buddy's Mama 04-21-2009, 10:29 AM We have pull help if needed--I will give you her addy/phone. She has offered to pull and is close to the shelter.
Kim Sellers 04-21-2009, 10:30 AM Jenn- THank you BUT this goes to show you HOW weird this shelter really is!!
CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kim Sellers 05-26-2009, 01:47 PM Update from new Mom--------
Hi,
Just wanted to drop a line about Susie Bea. Well, actually her name is Sabrina. I know she came to the rescue with this name but you didn't like it so it was changed to Susie Bea. It turns out that she responds to her name of Sabrina so we decided to keep it; figured it would be less confusing for her. Anyhow, we adopted Sabrina on Saturday, May 16th and she is settling in quite nicely to our home and routine. She loves having Austin (aka Brinkley adopted 07/05) around and she even is making nice with her feline brother. She was seen by our vet on Thursday, May 21st. She received one more vaccine of Lepto and her fecal exam showed hookworms and whipworms so we have given her 3 day dose of meds and will repeat again in three weeks and then she will have a recheck to make sure they are all gone. Other than that, she got a great checkup. She is a wonderful girl and she fits right in and we love having her in our family. I have attached a picture of her in her new home.
Thanks again for all the great work that you do in finding these wonderful labbies homes.
Beth
