More About ROMEO -URGENT
Update 8/3/09 "Romeo is doing so much better now that he's being properly taken care of. He has recently been treated to his very first day at the spa and smells and looks squeaky clean! Due to his eye disease (we believe it's PRA), Romeo only sees shadows and light and dark; however, this does not prevent him from pushing his way out the door in his quest to explore the great outdoors! He loves being outside and going for a walk - he pulls a bit on the leash, but once he settles down and gets his fill of exploring, he trots along quite nicely. We believe that with a little obedience training and practice, he would make a great walking partner (and maybe even a slow jogging partner on level, traffic-free ground). One-floor living would be optimum for him. What Romeo desperately needs is a foster/adoptive family who would be home for a good part of the day and would have the patience and understanding to help him acclimate to his new surroundings. Having a set routine each day (in and out of the same door), pushing in chairs, closing drawers/doors, not leaving items in the middle of the floor, encouraging voice commands - all of this will help him to get a mental map of his surroundings and allow him to maneuver more easily. He'll still always bump into things, but Labs with PRA get used to that - they have hard heads!! With an investment of a bit of time and a lot of love, Romeo would make a loving and very apreciative companion animal - he's a gentle giant who, despite all of his deprivation, is quiet and undemanding. He loves to tuck his head in your chest while you rub behind his ears . . .he'll stand there forever while you do that! After all these years, Romeo so deserves a soft bed, good food and lots of hugs and kisses . . . can you give that to him?" ROMEO--CHAINED--STARVED--BLIND-- "FORGIVING" -FOSTER HOME NEEDED THE BEAUTY OF THE LAB ROMEO IS A 9 YEAR OLD, PUREBRED CHOCOLATE LABRADOR RETRIEVER. ROMEO HAS SPENT EVERYDAY OF HIS LIFE ON A 12' CHAIN, ALONE IN HIS OWNERS BACK YARD. HE NEVER HAD A PAT, A HUG, A BALL TO FETCH OR HEARD A KIND WORD JUST DAYS AND NIGHTS ALONE ON A CHAIN. A GOOD SAMARITAN REPORTED ROMEO'S PLIGHT TO THE AUTHORITIES AND WE RECEIVED THE PLEA TO HELP. WITHIN HOURS THE CHAIN WAS BROKEN AND AS WE STARTED TO WALK ROMEO TO OUR CAR HIS TAIL BEGAN TO WAG, A SLOW TENTATIVE WAG BUT IT WAS STILL THERE THE SPIRIT AND LOVING NATURE OF THE LAB!!! THIS SPIRIT WAS HIDDEN AWAY FOR SO MANY YEARS BUT SOMEHOW ROMEO KNEW WE WERE THERE TO HELP---THEY DO KNOW!!! ROMEO LOST HIS SIGHT GRADUALLY A FEW YEARS AGO NOT THAT HIS OWNER CARED OR EVEN TOOK HIM TO A DOCTOR TO FIND OUT IF ANYTHING COULD BE DONE. WE DO KNOW THAT THE BLINDNESS IS IRREVERSIBLE BUT ROMEO'S WORLD HAS BEEN DARK FOR A VERY LONG TIME. MAYBE IT WAS A BLESSING THAT HE COULDN'T SEE HIS FAMILY SITTING IN THEIR WARM HOME LAUGHING AND THE CHILDREN PLAYING WHILE ROMEO CURLED UP ON A DIRT FLOOR AS THE COLD OF WINTER AND THE SWELTERING HEAT OF SUMMER ENGULFED HIM--THIS WAS HIS LIFE!!! IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT WHEN YOU LOOSE A SENSE YOUR OTHER SENSES BECOME HEIGHTENED AND THIS IS CERTAINLY TRUE WITH ROMEO. HIS SENSE OF SMELL IS SHARP AND MAKE UP FOR HIS LOSS OF SIGHT. JINGLE FOOD IN HIS BOWL AND HE IMMEDIATELY BEGINS TO SNIFF THE AIR AND DELIGHTS IN HIS 2-3 MEALS A DAY WHERE MANY DAYS IN HIS PAST LIFE THERE WAS NO FOOD. HIS 49 POUNDS HAS NOW INCREASED TO 75 WITHIN A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THE SLOW TENTATIVE TAIL WAG IS NOW A PUPPYISH WHOLE BODY WAG. ROMEO IS A TRUE EXAMPLE OF THE STEADFAST AND TRUSTING SPIRIT OF THE COMPANION LABRADOR. DESPITE HIS TRAGIC BETRAYAL FROM A FAMILY THAT HE TRUSTED TO CARE FOR HIM HE STILL HAS ONLY KISSES AND LOVE FOR ANYONE WHO WILL CALL HIS NAME, SAY A KIND WORD AND TOUCH HIM WITH A GENTLE PAT. WE KNOW THAT ADOPTING A BLIND DOG IS NOT FOR EVERYONE AND ROMEO DOES HAVE HIS LIMITATIONS. IT WILL TAKE SOMEONE WITH A HEART FULL OR LOVE, PATIENCE AND KINDNESS TO SHOW HIM HIS BIG FENCED YARD, TEACH HIM WHERE THE DECK IS SO HE CAN SPEND THE DAY BASKING IN THE SUN BEING CLOSE BY LISTENING TO YOU SPEAK TO HIM WHILE YOU WORK ON YOUR GARDEN. SOMEONE WHO IN THE EVENING WILL SHOW HIM "HIS" SPECIAL SPOT WHERE HE WILL CURL UP ON A SOFT BLANKET KNOWING HE IS SAFE IN HIS HOME WITH HIS FAMILY. ROMEO HAS WAITED A LONG LONG TIME TO HAVE SOMEONE TO LOVE. HIS GENTLE NATURE AND LOYALTY MAKE HIM THE MOST LOVING COMPANION ANYONE COULD EVER WANT. WE TRULY BELIEVE ROMEO'S MIRACLE IS OUT THERE, SOMEONE WHO IN THE SPIRIT OF GIVING HAS A HEART FULL OF LOVE, READY TO INSURE THAT THIS SPECIAL COMPANION FORGETS HIS TRAGIC PAST AND LIVES HIS LIFE SURROUNDED BY THE WARMTH OF A HOME AND THE JOY OF A FAMILY WHO WILL SEE WHAT A TREASURE HE IS AND CHERISH EVERY MOMENT WITH THIS GENTLE SOUL. WE FEEL THE PERFECT HOME FOR ROMEO WOULD BE A CALM, QUIET HOME WHERE ROMEO WOULD FEEL SAFE AND ABLE TO SPEND EASY CALM DAYS JUST BEING WHAT HE IS A COMPANION TO HIS FAMILY. ROMEO DOESN'T KNOW HE IS BLIND, DOESN'T MATTER TO HIM, WE ARE HOPING TO FIND SOMEONE THAT IT DOESN'T MATTER TO THEM AS WELL.IF YOU FEEL THAT YOU MIGHT BE ROMEO'S MIRACLE PLEASE CONTACT LAURIE AT lottoson@yahoo.com -FOSTER HOME NEEDED ASAP.
