Both my boys have been eating CN lamb and rice for months (may be over a year now) and doing really well on it. But I'm kind'a getting bored feeding the same thing. I'm considering switching/rotating foods...am I being stupid? In this case, does "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" apply?

You won't know until you try.... some dogs do wonderfully with rotation... others, not so much.

IMO, if your dogs can handle it, it's a wonderful thing.

I re-visited Rotation after the re-calls.... I will only rotate inside the company I feel confident with quality of product...

I do think if the dog can tolerate different foods switching can prevent allergy to the same food fed over and over...

I agree with the other posts. I never tried rotation until the last year and a half, but I'm pretty committed to the concept now. Fortunately, both my dogs do fine with changes. I think the longer a dog has been on the same food, the slower the first transition might need to be.

Although we've tried a number of brands, we're tending to stick with the Natura company (EVO, CN, Innova, Healthwise) and Champion Pet Food (Orijen, Acana), because the dogs do well on those products and I have reasonable trust in the companies.

I rotate every bag or second bag and also feed kibble in the mornings and raw at night. I firmly believe in rotation and my dogs are so used to rotating that they switch easily with no digestive problems. Here is a great article from dog food analysis on why we should be rotating.

You and I do the same thing... kibble rotation in the am, raw in the pm. :D

Back when we were living in Connecticut and had easy access to a dealer that carried Premium Edge, we were rotating Cash between the salmon and beef varieties. Cash has a ridiculously sensitive stomach, but he actually did pretty well with that. I'd suggest rotating between two flavors of the same brand of food - less chance for upset stomachs since it's usually just the protein that's different.

When you are first trying out a new kibble for rotation, I believe it's a good idea to keep them on it for a minimum of 3 months. That way, you can see how well it works for their coat, energy level, etc.

Once you have several different successful foods, people are all over the map on their changing frequency. I usually buy the middle size bags (around 15 lbs.) and go through 2 or 3 before changing. Nothing real scientific.

:roll2: Um, yeah. I typed that on my tiny G1 keyboard... Pardon the typos! :teehee:

LuckyLuna, thanks for the reply. Will be switching her to EVO soon & will hang out with that for a few months then.

Thanks for all the info...I have thought about doing a rotation for quite a while, but just haven't mustered up the nerve. Sounds like it works well for quite a few of you.

if your dog does not have severe allergies, I say go for it. I have been doing that for along time with cooper. every bag is a different kibble plus he never gets the same can food twice in a row.
Cooper doesn't need to switch slowly.
