View Full Version : Rotating food?

I have heard about rotating food, but wasn't sure how often you were supposed to do this. Guinness has always been a slowish eater but she's gotten much slower lately. We just got back from vacation, and while we were gone she wasn't finishing her meals (she would eat 1/2-1 cup of it) and then maybe nibble on it later that day. The first day home, she ate a few bites and then walked away. She ate 1/2 of her food yesterday and I left it out in case she got hungry. Today has been similar, and her food hasn't been touched much.

Is she getting bored with it? I had been playing with the idea of raw food, but I think it's too expensive for us right now. She's currently on Solid Gold Wolf King, and she LOVED it initially. She has been doing awesome with it, her coat is really shiny and has great poops.

Christen I think that many people here rotate, some do it every bag (40#'s) others every couple months. If Guinness is not super sensitive then I don't see a reason not to offer her something else. I would love to rotate but Indie isn't on the same page as me...

I understand your concern, I hope that sweet girl isn't causing too much trouble being picky :)

It's just been the last week or two, which is so bizarre for her since she is such a food hound. She did eventually eat her food today, but it took her several hours. I did call Solid Gold to see if they changed the formula, or if this is possibly a spoiled bag of food but I haven't heard back from them yet. She seems just fine health wise, so I'm not terribly concerned. We had a very busy few days camping, and she was totally pooped out the entire time.

And the best part of camping...the little poop was diving off the banks on her own! She shocked the crap out of Will and I, she just went for it.

yeah Guinness, we all knew you were a jumper!

As for the food I guess it's a judgement call, maybe she is tired of it, couldn't hurt to try something else..

Some of the lucky ones with dogs with cast iron stomachs are able to rotate foods one bag after another, with no slow changeover.

I'm rotating now (mostly) among foods I already know work for my sensitive dog (Drum), and I'm using 2 big bags per rotation, though the new one I'm trying now (Solid Gold Mmillennia) is making some pretty awful-looking poops, so I think I'll just do one bag of it (but they're LOVING the taste).

I was initially doing a week-long changeover between foods, but I've found doing a full day of bland diet in between food changes is working just as well for us.
