I feed Frodo Royal Canin LB, and yes, his stools are getting somewhat better..not totally there yet but hopefully with time.

Anyway, I have an ancient Cocker Spaniel as well named Chance, and the only thing ever have ever gotten him to eat is Top Choice, which is like potato chips for dogs... garbage food.

Last night, I went to the Pet Store to get his Top Choice, and they were outso I had to feed him some of Frodo's food. He ate it like he was starving...same thing this morning as well.

Do you think eating puppy food will hurt him? My gut feeling is if he will eat it, it's gotta be better than the crap he normally eats.

It won't hurt him and I agree with you that its better than what he had been eating.

I have Bromley on Royal Canin Puppy 32 and I'm not convinced that he really likes it. He is 8 wks and we give him 1 cup, 3x a day - per the bag recommendations. He has never eaten that much and never seems all that interested in it. He probably eats 1.5 - 2 cups a day... if that. For two of the meals, he will eat fairly well (over half anyway). The third he sort of just eats a few kibbles here and there. He has been on it for about a week. Should I try sometime else or just it more time. I've seen that I lot of people here like the California Natural foods. Do you use the Puppy Dry or the regular Lamb and Rice?

I am trying to remember how much I fed Frodo at 8 weeks, I don't think it was 3 cups.. Maybe Bromely is just full and that's why he stops eating. I feed him just the regular dry but I still add some water to it because he eats so fast it gets stuck in his throat if I don't.

Not sure of the prices where you are, but a bag of Royal Canin is 80 bucks here..but if Chance will eat it, I will gladly continue to buy it.

We've had Chance the Cocker (aptly named...short for Last Chance) since he was about 2. I was in a flea market and seen this poor creature tied to a playpen with a for sale sign. $250. I went to the woman and said that I would not pay 250 but I would be willing to pay $100 and he would have a wonderful home. She didn't want to take the offer so I left her my number just in case. I guess she couldn't get anyone to pay her price so she called me a couple weeks later and asked if I still wanted him because if not, he would be put down. I drove to the next city to pick him up..she lived in a one bedroom upstairs apt with Chance..a Great Dane, about 3 cockapoo's and a toddler. Chance was malnourished and had a severe ear infection. Since we have brought him home, it's been a challenge to get him to eat anything but bread.

Since we adopted Chance 10 years ago, we have spent hundreds of dollars trying to get his ears under control, but they were too far gone when we got him, so we finally had to resort to removing his ear canals because he was in agony with the scratching and itching and bleeding. He has a heart murmer as well, but he is one of the sweetest most forgiving dogs I have ever had the pleasure to own. I know he won't be around alot longer, so yes, we do indulge him and he gets away with pretty much anything he wants. Sorry this is so long, but that's what I mean about if he wants to eat puppy food, he can eat it. He was given such a bad start in life that I feel it's the least he is owed.

Sounds awful, you're poor Chance. I'm glad to hear that you have made it life much better. The Royal Canin here is about about $38 for a 40# bag... which is right on par with the other high end foods. I'm just not sure how long of a "trial" period to use. I wish I would have bought a smaller bag to see if he liked it first because it will take quite some time to go through the whole 40lb bag. I hope you're right and that he is just eating when he is hungry. I didn't know that labs knew of such a thing :D I have a feeling that the person we bought him from just left food out all the time so we are trying to get Bromley to eat when it is time to eat.

Bromleydad,

Our Nikki did not go crazy on Royal Cannin Lab either. She ate it the way you described, a bit here and there and taking her time to finish, not the way she normally inhales food. At first I just thought it was because the nuggest where bigger, and she's only 6 mos, but I switched to Diamond and she's back to inhaling her dish in seconds flat. She loves it.
