I never really put a lot of research into my dog's food. I guess I assumed that because I was using Royal Canine for Labrador's it was good. Now I see all these different things everyone is talking about and supplements that they give. Should I switch to a different food. Price is really not an issue I want my dog around for as long as possible.
Thanks

ThanksHow is your dog doing on this food? This is not one I've fed but I know several people who have fed it for years are really happy with it.

Since that is all I've fed him since he graduated from puppy food he seems ok. I don't really have anything to compare it to though. This if my first lab. What are signs that he isn't doing well on it. I read here about supplements and some foods not making them hungary all the time. He would eat 24 hours a day if I fed him. Do you think this is because of the food not being filling enough?

How much do you feed him? I know the size and shape of the RC kibbles mean they get "lots" of cups of food.

Our guys are really doing well on RC. They love it, have great looking poop and coats are shiny. I mix 1/2 RC and 1/2 Pro plan for my skinny guy. RC does tend to be lower in calories and that's really my only complaint.

I recently put Honney on RC and was wondering if it was any good too? She is on the "thick" side and I noticed she has slimmed down a tad and her muscle tone looks great. I had her on the Wellness but she didn't like it, she was either slow to eat or I had to force her to eat it? So far so good with the RC.

Is Blue Buffalo any better?

LOVE it. Kiley has had ongoing allergies for years, and after her liver infection last summer, the vet recommended we switch to Skin Support by Royal Canin. After she blew her coat in the fall (I mean really blew it, she was bald on her butt for awhile ) her coat came in so thick, shiny and soft. She likes the food better as well. She is on smaller portions as I believe it is much higher in fat content than her old food was.

Good for Honey! I really like the high protein content of Royal Canin for Labradors (30%) and lower fat. The high protein helps your dog to maintain lean muscle mass and trim down.

I think Royal Canin is a very good food. The only ingredient I see that some dogs may have trouble with is the "corn gluten meal", but if you dog is doing well on the food, I see no reason to change.

You really need to feed what works best for your dog.

Blue Buffalo was recently involved in the pet food recall....and I am not sure what the results or findings were.

I give him 2 cups once a day. He is a great weight the vet says, even with all the babies scraps. I guess you are right about his hunger being tied to being a Lab. I think if I left the lid to the 40# bag of food open it would be gone in no time, lol!

Guess I'll stick with this food for now with all of the positve responses about it. Should I be giving him some sort of supplements also?

How old is your Lab?

It is always a good idea to start your Lab on Glucosamine Chondroiton. This helps to maintain healthy joints, which is so important to this breed. Toby has been on this supplement for about 3 years and he does great!

I use Cosequin DS which is made by Nutramax Labs. Here is a link to their site:

Another good supplement to add would be Salmon Oil. This is very good for healthy skin and coat as well as maintaining healthy heart and kidney function.

Royal Canin Labrador formula has an unusual large size and odd shape, which means each cup is very low in calories - less than 300! 2 cups is only about 570 calories a day. Unless you are giving a LOT of scraps, this amount of food would not give him the nutrition he needs, so in this case, his hunger is indeed justified.

I give Honney 4 cups a day, 2 in the AM and 2 at PM feeding.
