Has anyone read this book and finished it? I normally love memoirs/auto biographies/biographies, but this book was so disturbing I literally stopped reading it and threw it in the trash.

Was it boring or gross? AddieGirl 01-11-2007, 12:09 PM Without going into too much detail, the book was interesting but disturbing. It left me with too many graphic images in my mind that I couldn't shake (but I always have a mental picture of what I read so it may not affect others like it did me) so I had to put it down. I was just appalled at what the poor kid went through growing up--I knew I lived a sheltered life! Feather 01-11-2007, 12:35 PM I LOVED this book. Currently being made into a movie. His other books are good, too. It's not for everyone. alinnell 01-11-2007, 12:38 PM I did read it and yes it did have disturbing images. What I don't get is how so many people could live in that house and let those things go on. Were they all mentally ill? And how could the mother give her son to that "doctor" to raise. Very, very wrong. If you like memoirs, read Alan Alda's. That was a good one. More refreshing. I also like Deana Martin's memoir of her dad and another by a guy that had just been told he was dying (it isn't as morbid as you'd think). If you want the name, let me know and I'll look it up once I get home. AddieGirl 01-11-2007, 12:50 PM I LOVED this book. Currently being made into a movie. His other books are good, too. It's not for everyone. I was really looking forward to reading it and I actually liked the book , but I STILL have some images in my head that don't need to be there  . I think a lot of the problem is that I picture things as I read and there were some incidents that I didn't need to picture! alinnell - I wondered the same thing! Also, I'll look for those books you mentioned! An aside, another really good book is The Glass Castle which was also on the bestseller list a while back. Feather 01-11-2007, 12:55 PM Here's a link to show you his other books. I've read "Dry" (fabulous) and Sellevision (so-so). http://www.augusten.com/index_flash.html AddieGirl 01-11-2007, 01:02 PM Thanks for the link, that's a great website! The intro page to his newest book made me LOL! I will look at adding Dry and Magical Thinking to my list to read. NYMare 01-11-2007, 02:31 PM Yes it was disturbing but in a comforting way--like ok I had a crazy childhood, but this guy had an INSANE one!! I loved it. And the movie is out. I also loved the movie! And I also loved The Glass Castle! Both offbeat, unusual lives, just in different ways. NYMare 01-11-2007, 02:32 PM Yes it was disturbing but in a comforting way--like ok I had a crazy childhood, but this guy had an INSANE one!! I loved it. And the movie is out. I also loved the movie! And I also loved The Glass Castle! Both offbeat, unusual (might I add painful) lives, just in different ways. Luc-Luca-Lucas 01-12-2007, 02:57 PM I read it and I enjoyed it for the most part. It definately has disturbing moments. The movie came out a couple months ago, so I'm waiting for it to come out on DVD. (Feb 6th) cc26759 01-12-2007, 06:16 PM Loved the book. Thought it was even better than Dry. Disturbing, yes. Humorous, definitely. LivinLabs 01-15-2007, 10:25 AM :scared: I just bought this book last night, and, like Abbiegirl... I dont need any disturbing visuals stuck in head. you all are scaring me...:hole: LivinLabs 01-19-2007, 04:58 AM I got about half way thru the book... maybe a little more. I tried to stick with it... to see the humor. Couldn't do it! |
