View Full Version : runny soft stool! :(
dfresh55 03-21-2009, 07:50 PM So recently misty my 4 month old pup decided that she didn't want to eat her science diet lamb and rice lb pup food anymore and just stoped eating it! She was doing good on it for a while except for bad gas so I planned on switching any ways.
Well she is now on blue buffalo lb pup, but when I tried to mix the food she wouldn't touch anyof the science diet, and wouldn't really it if it was in her bowl so I just let her eat the new blue buffalo whiched she loves and gobbles down! But the only problem is she has had a runny stool for about a week now and it doesn't seem to be getting any better! Whatcould be causeing this I know the not mixing wasn't good but she wouldn't eat otherwise!:( . She does have a vet app on tues. To get her rabies and last pup shot.
Has someone else had this problem with this food?
Mokhahouse 03-21-2009, 07:58 PM It does sound like the sudden change over may have upset her stomach. Just to be sure I would take a stool sample with you to the vet to have it checked. If the loose stools don't stop you may have to put her put her on a bland diet such as chicken and rice and then reintroduce the new food slowly. Good luck.
3lablady 03-21-2009, 08:04 PM It could be the quick change and maybe the Blue Buffalo is too rich for her.
bsdamron 03-21-2009, 08:07 PM I am not an expert by any means, but both of my boys are on Blue Buffalo Whitefish and Sweet Potato and they LOVE it. My oldest had hot spots and hasn't had any since I put him on it and their coats are just as shiny as a new car!! I do believe this is a great holistic foo---good choice!
Labman 03-21-2009, 08:39 PM Yes, a vet visit, and take a stool sample. Sounds like more than a food problem to me.
dfresh55 03-21-2009, 09:33 PM thank u all for your responces!
NancyO 03-21-2009, 09:53 PM I've heard both. Some dogs do really well on Blue Buffalo and some have loose stools. A friend of mine had her great dane on it and he had pudding poop. She ended up switching him to Purina Selects and the poop is much better.

dfresh55 03-21-2009, 10:59 PM She also has had the worst gas, but that has been from the very start, even on science diet, and so far on the blue buffalo!
She seems to be likeing the new food a lot better tho.
Still seems to be very itchy as well, but only has been on it for a week or so
g'smom 03-22-2009, 07:13 AM If you didn't switch very slowly, that is probably why she has gas and runny poop. Science Diet is a mid grade food, that is very digestible and you switched to a rich, high end food that probably takes time to get used to. You may have to switch to something less rich. Some foods in that price range you might try are Eagle Pack Holistic, Pro Plan Selects, Nature's Recipe but first rule out parasites!!
Lovemylabby 03-22-2009, 07:21 AM I agree that your puppy need s Vet visit. Loose, runny stools could be the result of a bacterial infection, worms, etc....especially in a puppy so young.
Once, my Toby stopped eating his food and had awful diarrhea and we discovered he had a bacterial infection (not sure how he got it...Labs eat everything...) After 5 days of an antibiotic, he was just find and back to his normal self.
I also agree...the Blue Buffalo may be too rich for a delicate puppy's digestive system.
My Toby does best on the "middle quality" foods....the very high end premium diets, he did not do well on.
I would at least start at the Vet and then go from there...good luck to you.
LadyBuckeye 03-22-2009, 07:32 AM Definately need a stool sample evaluated. Are you feeding the same amount of the two different foods? It may not be required - the two dog chows are not "built" the same so you may need to feed less on the Blue Buffalo. It may be a good idea, if it were me, to reduce the food some and even try Libby's canned 100% pumpkin (a tablespoon) to see if it helps. Another suggestion is that I agree with above - a bland diet for a a couple days to see if that firms things up and then re-introduce the food. First and foremost, the stool sample.
dfresh55 03-22-2009, 12:44 PM ya i will definitly be bringing a stoll sample with me to the vet on tuesday! she did have a bacterial infection a while back that was resolved with 7 days of antibiotics, but is now starting to re apear.
i took her off the science diet because it wasnt the best food and she stoped eating it. but had a little bit of a runny stool then the lajst day or two before we changed foods. and the gradual food change is what i normaly do but she wouldnt touch the science diet any more at all
CaraBella 03-22-2009, 02:02 PM I agree, a vet visit is in order with stool sample.
One idea for future reference in transitioning if she won't touch the old food, is use chicken & rice instead of the old food.
Golightly Labs 03-22-2009, 02:09 PM It might be a coincidence that the food change came and got another tummy bug from eating deer or rabbit poop. My Holly has had it several times. It might not be the food at all. I have used BB and thought it was great.
