View Full Version : Salmon Oil...
gatorblueyes 06-09-2008, 07:07 PM I have heard many good things about both for people and dogs...so I bought some today. Jubs has been having some allergy issues so she is getting benedryls and I thought it might be a good time to start the salmon oil. I put it on Jubilee's food and I swear she licked a hole in the ceramic! She will probably have a little sore on her tongue:eek:!
lillybenny 06-09-2008, 07:27 PM Never heard of this, I hate seafood, but I hope it does the trick for your pupper.
spruce 06-09-2008, 07:46 PM does salmon oil differ from plain, old fish oil pills? the fish oil pills are absolutely necessary for my old goldie's skin.
Bella & Mari 06-09-2008, 08:10 PM The fish oil sold for dogs is more concentrated and has the ingredients included that are needed to help make it more beneficial...if that makes sense.
We love salmon oil here! It was a life saver for Bella's coat when we lived in the god-awful dryness of CO. We missed humidity! lol
Puck'sMom 06-09-2008, 08:12 PM Puck LOVES his salmon oil. He goes nuts for it. We used to pop it open and pour it on his food, but we soon realized he liked the whole gelcap thing too!

Ohhh...this salmon oil comes in a pump. I just squished it over her food. I used to give her fish oil caps...she will eat anything. Right now her meal includes food, two benedryls, two ligaplex, a glucosamine and half a proin:rolleyes:. She eats it all. I could probably crumble up cardboard in there and she'd eat that too;).

I usually shut the bathroom door, but I forgot.
Let us know how it does. I've been looking at the grizzley salmon oil pump to squirt on mines food.

SeahawkChic 06-09-2008, 10:22 PM Buddy gets gelcap form.
coopers mom 06-10-2008, 03:43 AM I use the Grizzly salmon oil but after this bottle is finished I am thinking of switching to the seapet brand as that one includes the vit E.
LuckyLuna 06-10-2008, 09:06 AM I used Grizzly Salmon oil from a pump bottle for about a year and it seemed to be very helpful. Seems like a good product. Now, we've switched to giving the dogs the same human grade salmon oil gel caps with vitamin E that we use. It costs less; is higher grade and doesn't need to be refrigerated.
Cook.MN 06-10-2008, 09:12 AM Interesting, glad to see so many people already use and love Salmon Oil...seeing as my company is going to start carrying it for dogs. It's ironic because before we decided to give it a try my boss asked me "Do you think there's a market for it?", so reading this thread gave me a little chuckle.
CanyonLabradors 06-10-2008, 09:49 AM Ok, but let me ask a question. I heard the Omega 3's are good for heart health and the Omega 6's are good for skin/coat/hair. Most of the salmon oil and fish oil I see at the store is Omega 3. Are you paying attention the ration of Omega 3/Omega 6 when you buy what you buy? I honestly don't notice a difference with my dogs with what I am giving. They get 2000mg daily, and nothing.

We use Grizzly Salmon Oil.
"The health condition of your dog or cat's skin and coat is influenced by the contents and balance of fatty acids in the diet. The ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids in the diet of your dog or cat is important in order to avoid degenerative conditions like hot spots, a dull coat and inflamed, dry and itchy skin. Scientific research supports the optimum ratio of fatty acids in the range of 1:3 to 1:6 (omega-3:omega-6). Grizzly Salmon Oil™ has a ratio of approximately 8:1 (omega-3: omega-6) and is thus ideally suited for bringing commonly seen ratios in generic and premium dog and cat foods of between 1:10 and 1:20 in line with the target ratio of around 1:5."
Two of ours have had issues with skin allergies and it has made a marked difference for us in their skin and coat (along with a GREAT diet, of course). We've been using it for about a year and a half now and have found that we have fewer issues with the season allergies than we've had in year's past. That and everyone's coat quality has really improved. AND they love the taste.
Heather 06-10-2008, 10:45 AM Right now Ry gets 5000 mg of fish oil daily as a natural anti-inflammatory. I rotate between fish body oil and Salmon oil. It really is effective.
I don't worry about the Omega 6's as commercially raised meat is higher in O6's than O3's. They recommend that anybody on a raw diet supplement with the O3's to balance it out.

Thanks this is encouraging to hear. Jubilee would have allergy blips every now and then but there definately seems to be something seasonal that bothers her down here. I hope this helps! She already has a really good diet and I would rather not put her on more meds.
Heather 06-10-2008, 11:07 AM Allergies are such a PITA.
Tyson was having major eye allergy issues a few years ago- so bad that he'd paw at his eyes and had to go on steroid drops. Annie had just been diagnosed with cancer and I'd read all about Spirulina. I bought a few bottles and started feeding it to all the dogs (there was 180 tablets in a bottle so I figured that I'd give it to the whole crew). We are on our second season where Tyson is allergy free. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it!

Sometimes its finding the magic bullet. The best part- Cancer Annie is still going strong, too!
Noel's Mom 06-13-2008, 03:51 PM OK, I bought some Human grade Salmon oil gelcaps today (1000 mg), but I assume it's only 500mg per gelcap since the serving size is 2. I'll probably poke a hole in it and squirt it on their food
How much a day do I give to mine?
Big Dogs = 64 - 70 lbs
Little Dogs = 12 - 15 lbs
LabLoverNMiami 06-24-2008, 07:17 AM Ok- I'm looking for advice here- Angel is 6 &1/2 mo old now and she definetly has skin issues. I just switched her food from garbage grocery store doggie food to Blue Buffalo life protection large breed pup formula. I also bathe her in Vet's Formula medicated shampoo to help with skin allergens and bacteria's. I'm thinking the fish/salmon oil maybe a good idea too. Angel has the itchy scratchy's and no fleas. What is the recommended dosage and brand. Can I give her human formula? I am in the market for a good vet too if anyone knows of one in the S.FL area ( Ft.Lauderdale area) I have one right now who just thinks I am a cash cow! and will suggest nothing for me to do on my own but wanted to sell me the same shampoo I bought online for $6-she wanted more than triple for it in her office! Please help...
Patty/Breeder 06-24-2008, 09:35 AM Dosage for dogs with issues is up to 1000mg per 10 lbs of weight.
I would start your pup on 1 capsule daily and maybe go up to 2 and see how she does.
See info on dosage at www.dogaware.com (http://www.dogaware.com) under supplements for arthritis and kidney disease.
You can use human grade but if the product does not contain Vit. E you must supplement it along with the fish oil capsule.
