As I sit here, I look upon this cute little face. He is for sure a lab. But for some reason, someone didn't love him. I rescued him today. From a kill shelter. The worst of all shelters. If a dog/puppy is not adopted in a certain amount of time, they are euthanized. They said that when they rescued him he was so starved that you couldn't pet him because it hurt him so much--and he was only 3 months old. For some reason, they got attached, and that is why I have Sammy today. I already have a 2 year old lab, but being the animal lover that I am, I always knew that I would have more and I knew that I would have to rescue one since the only local shelter we have is a kill shelter. There is no way to change this since shelters are so overpopulated and underfunded. Normally, dogs are only given one week at our shelter, luckily Sammy was well loved. They told me that they get 25-30 labs and lab mixes a month and that 95% of those are put to sleep. That fact made me throw up just at the thought. I saw all the other dogs as I walked out with Sammy and knew that most of them would not be here next week. My heart has never been so heavy. And many we full bred. Please look to your local shelter. The dog's life you save, may save your heart, trust me I know.

Good luck with the new labby. It is so very sad how many dogs are in the shelters and how many are put to sleep. We also got our dog from a shelter - he was pulled from a shelter in the south and transported to us in CT. A few rescues in CT actually do this for labs in southern shelters.

Yeah for Sammy - I'm sure you will give him a good life.

You can read about Theo in the rescue stories also.

Post some pictures when you get a chance.

Unfortunately being the #1 dog breed in the USA, Labs end up being a dime a dozen at local shelters. :( All the shelters around the Houston area are also kill shelters where dogs are given 72 hours before euthanization.

Thanks for rescuing Sammy!!! :)

Sammy has a new home and has become a new friend to your already (unamed Lab). After Sammy is fattened up a bit can you post a pic of them both?

And just a note for a you MonoLab owners out there. You should rush to your local shelter and get your Lab a friend. If you have room in your heart for one..you have room for two..or three....

I wish I could get more than two.

Are you serious? There are no No-Kill Shelters in or around Houston? That is surprising.

CitatioN10, Good for you man. You go Rescue a dog.Yep some of these poor pups have sad tales. Probably the dog you rescue tommorrow would have had a sad tale too.

The way I see it. People who rescue 1 dog and see those thankful faces and that look is always there. Now I understand if it is an 8 week old puppy that does not have a clue of what life is yet may not have those same eyes (thankful) but a dog that is 1 year or more will give you those thankful eyes and melt your heart like a hot knife going through butter for the next 10-15 years. Hey even if you want a puppy? Go for it. Ohh and when you do. Post those pictures.

I know my next pup is comming out of Texas. Or someone is going to kick my arse.:D

Rescuing a dog of any breed is a wonderful feeling but to me Labbys are the best. We adopted my Yellow lab Luke about three years ago. When we got him he was skin and bones and had bite wounds on the inside of his legs. Today Luke is very healthy and happy and also has a tiny little friend (Alfalfa-Tiny toy poddle) taging along. I hope you have good luck with your new puppy!
(I will have pictures of the boys up soon!) :D

We're doing the same. The dog we want is being fostered here in CT, but he came from the south.
