This is a stupid question, but I have never before bought sardines. I just gave my pup a sardine...she loved it. Now, what do I do with the rest of them? I put them in a zip lock bag and put them in the refrigerator...about how long will they last before they go bad??? How often should I give her a sardine? I have been giving her fish oil capsules and flaxseed oil and on occasion have given her an egg. She has never had stomach issues, so I went on and gave her a sardine tonight. She is just over 4 mos old. Thanks!

I am not a real food expert but if sardines come from a can they must preservetives so they don't go bad, and I feed my dog 1 sardine every 3 days, but its your decision of how many sardines you wanna feed him a week. Just give him 1 per day.

I feed Nellie a can of sardines about every 1 to 2 weeks. I use the whole can at once. They will go bad in the fridge. Why don't you freeze them. you can give them frozen.

That is a great idea, I will freeze them. Guests might freak out when they open my fridge and see a bag of headless sardines! Thanks,

Fish-cicles! That sounds like a good idea, especially for summer.
Check the labels, but most canned fish is only preserved with salt. I rinse it before I give it to Java. She usually gets a can of sardines with a meal each week and also a can of salmon each week. Just be sure to get it packed in water, NOT soybean oil.
Some do olive oil or tomato sauce, too, but I haven't found those.
You can work up to a full can at a time... I think I started by giving Java 1/2 a can, about 2 filets.

a quick google search reveals:
http://www.mycustompak.com/healthNotes/Food_Guide/Sardines.htm
"Unopened canned sardines can be stored for up to a year in a dry, cool place. Once opened, they will keep for up to two days if you wrap them well and refrigerate them."

FAO - thanks for the info. Ours are in the fridge for 4 days - going to dump those. Was going to give her some tonight. We started Sierra on sardines last week - she loved them. I will definitely freeze them - love that idea.
I will have to try Salmon too. Bought mackerel - see if she likes that.
Thanks everyone.
