LONGJOHN WAS RESCUED.
PLS. SAVE BEAUT. CALAMITY JANE-SHE HAS UNTIL WEEKEND!
Hi All:
After last week's successful rescue efforts on Petfinders, I knew things couldn't remain "cheery" for too long. Once again, we have five perfectly adoptable dogs (more coming but not just yet) on the shelter kill list --all scheduled for euthanization on Wednesday morning. One is a male Yellow Lab (Longjohn) that arrived at the shelter emaciated and is just now starting to gain weight. The other is a gorgeous, white lab mix (Calamity Jane) with a tan face. She was abandoned at a local veterinarian's office before being moved over to the shelter.
I have been in touch with Rudy's Lab Rescue which is why I am now here, based on referral. I am asking any that reads this with any contacts in the Dallas Ft. Worth to Houston to Little Rock or anywhere else in Northeast or Far East Texas to please pass this info along ASAP and PLEASE feel free to cross-post on these endangered dogs behalf. We are located just in Mount Pleasant, Texas - just off of Interstate 30 between Sulphur Springs, Texas and Texarkana.
Rescue contact MUST be made by Tuesday before 5pm central time in order to spare Longjohn. Calamity Jane has until the weekend. The shelter has filled up with quite a few new arrivals that are not yet posted on our petfinder site.

Mount Pleasant Animal Control and Protection is a small kill shelter in a factory (Pilgrim's) town of 20,000+ - many of them migrants . Currently, there is no animal welfare association of any kind in the immediate area. I am a local junior high school journalism teacher directing the theme "Humane Teens" for this and future school years. I have over 50 students working on alternative shifts to help me photograph shelter animals for adoption on this Web site as well as the local newspaper and public flyer distribution. We have plans to help educate the community about animal welfare and hopefully forge a relationship with the city to improve the conditions for animals. The disheartening part is that so many animals are dumped / abandoned at the shelter that sometimes they are placed on the "kill line" before we can even get to them to give them a chance. The shelter staff is compassionate and and attempts everything possible to work with us. Right now, there are only two adults on my campus involved in this project and one is doing "background work." Currently, I am the only one actively working with the kids on this project with exception to Theri, the shelter director.
YOU can make a difference for our town. Some of you already have! We are grateful for the assistance and rescue efforts. It's extremely meaningful to my teen students. Many of them are part of a high risk population. Reaching out and helping those that can't help themselves gives them a sense of empowerment, purpose and control over their own lives.
Please leave public comments on this post or e-mail us at humane_teens@yahoo.com (note that this is not the shelter e-mail address but our volunteer group's address - we are in touch with the shelter on a daily level).
Mount Pleasant Animal Control and Protection can be contacted by calling 903-575-4174 - Ask for shelter director Theri Brown.
Thank you!
