Don't know if anyone knows about this "new" Science Diet "Nature's Best" food- obviously they are picking up on the fact that people are figuring out that by-products and low grade ingredients in pet food are not "scientifically balanced". Now they are claiming to have "the first and only CLINICALLY PROVEN natural pet food to provide complete and balanced nutrition"... now, if they are going to all this trouble, one may wonder, why not actually create a high quality food? Check out the ingredient list... it may be an improvement over original Science Diet, but is still clearly heavily grain based, and still contains controversial fillers, pork, wheat and soy! Some gigantic industrial corporations never learn...

Ingredients: Chicken, Brown Rice, Whole Grain Wheat, Cracked Pearled Barley, Soybean Meal, Chicken Meal, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Egg Product, Natural Flavor, Whole Grain Oats, Apples, Cranberries, Soybean Oil, Peas, Carrots, Dried Beet Pulp, Iodized Salt, Flaxseed, Broccoli, Vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Calcium Carbonate, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract. too much soy in there; soy eaten every day has been linked to thyroid problems. I wouldn't take the chance, even in rotation

I have heard in large quantities that yes it can cause thyroid problems. Unfortunately I do not know what those quantities are. I occassionally eat Edamame (Soy beans) and drink Soy Milk and have yet to have a problem but I also know I try to eat all things in moderation...

If I have time to dig into Soy research and find out those quanities, I'll let you know.

A lot of people get duped into Science Diet. I ran into a rep once and, after explaining to her why I feed what I feed (especially with performance dogs), she still had the adacity to recommend their "High Energy" formula. What I don't understand is how are you supposed to feed a performance dog off of a 26.5% protein mix of Corn (Ground Corn is the first ingredient)? They've got to be the only "performance" food I've seen that doesn't have at least a meat by-product as the first ingredient and consist of at least 30-32% protein.

While this new Nature's Best doesn't seem like it's the worst food available (and more power to anyone whose dog does do well on it), the soybean meal and soybean oil would probably make me skip it.

Some gigantic industrial corporations never learn...
I read in Forbes magazine that the reason they came out with this food, was to keep up with the public that is going to more natural kibbles, due to the pet food recalls. The problem is their new formula is not much better than their other formulas. My guess is they flat out really do not care, as long as they can stay in the TOP 5 selling pet food companies, along with Nestle Purina, Mars, Del Monte, and Iams.

I would love to think that these companies cared at one time when they started their companies, but I think greed at this point has taken over..

Sad thing is the number of people that will eat it up (pardon the pun).

In humans, too but not sure of the amounts. You can do a google search and type in soy and thyroid and there is a lot of info on it. I'm surprised SD would put all that soy in their food:(

Why surprised? It's not like SD has a track record of making great dog foods...

We all know that. It's just that they could have done much better especially with the bad rep they've had over the years.

Agreed. Like I said, you would think if they were going to bother with a natural food, they might as well have actually made it somewhat high quality... oh well, what can you do? Like tkpaul said, people are going to buy it in droves and there's not much that is going to change that fact.

People buy much worse, as the top 5 pet food sellers prove that:)
