BREAKING NEWS: Second Company Likely Imported Tainted Rice Protein From China (http://www.itchmo.com/read/second-company-likely-imported-tainted-rice-protein-from-china_20070423)

Two US Senators say that a company in addition to Wilbur-Ellis has imported rice protein concentrate that is “also likely to be contaminated with melamine.” [Reuters story here (http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN23332213)]
The senators say that the FDA is aware of the second importer, but is not identifying the company. The information was provided to the senators from industry insiders, not the FDA. Despite a senate hearing, the FDA continues to withhold information about the companies involved.
The senators’ letter came ahead of a congressional hearing on Tuesday to examine the pet food scare as well as the larger issue of human food safety before a U.S. House of Representatives committee.
FDA spokeswoman Cathy McDermott said so far the agency is only aware of one rice protein importer, Wilbur-Ellis Co., but the investigation is ongoing.
The circle of contamination continues to widen. Please stay tuned for more possible recalls over the next week.
Itchmo continues to advise avoiding all foods that contain rice protein.

I'm not surprised, but still very sad.

Let's all keep our eyes peeled.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall when the FDA travels over to inspect those plants in China! That's going to be a tense moment from a foreign relations standpoint.

Indeed it will. Just getting permission to do so seems to be straining it.

Just got off the phone with a Natural Balance representative.. apparently several of the can formulas have the Rice protien in the foods.. they were not even aware of it.. all the formulas have been tested and they are safe.. they are just volunteering to pull all the cans . they dont want any foods out there that has ingredients in them that are NOT on the label.. I personally am feeding the Lamb formula canned.. she assured me it was fine.. but It will be several weeks before the new cans are out in the stores... sigh.. also.. she said that the animals are getting really sick with in 1-2 days of ingesting the bad food.. I am gonna be returning the cat food and I will go ahead and keep the last can of Lamb formula dog food... and just plan on finding a safe replacement till the new stuff comes out.. Man will I be glad when this whole situation is over..

A pet food company that does not know what is in its cans? That is very worrisome to me.
