View Full Version : So what is on your dogs raw menu for the week?
Scouters 11-23-2004, 10:05 AM I give Scout 1lb of raw meat per day. Mostly chicken wings, necks, turkey necks, hearts and gizzards, lamb sometimes, He gets 2-3 pieces of liver three times a week. Sometimes he gets boiled potatoes mixed with two raw eggs. He loves boiled Brocolli... I will give him a cup of this at a seperate feeding. He really really loves the raw diet. His coat is beautiful!
Black Labbies 11-24-2004, 03:11 PM Glad that your raw diet is working so well for Scout. Are you following someones recipe from a book?
Scouters 11-24-2004, 03:36 PM I took Sylvia Hammerstom's advice from Skansen Kennel. She has been raising champion Giant Schnauzers for 50 years and claims that her giants never have health problems due largely to the raw diet. Of course, I give a variety of foods from week to week but the main stay is one lb of meat a day. I also give vitamin supplements. Scouts coat is beautiful. Im so glad that he LOVES the raw diet too.
McBainandLoki'sMom 11-25-2004, 03:19 AM McBain gets chicken frames or Turkey necks (about 1 lb) for breakfast every morning...
For dinner he gets - 1 fish meal a week (usually salmon or sardines), one Tripe meal a week, two meals with organ meat in them mixed with ground meat, and a couple of other dinners that just depend on what's on top of the freezer (like deer, moose, elk, boar, buffalo, antelope etc.) also I often add an egg, or some cottage cheese to his dinners.
He loves it!
I took him to the vet yesterday (one I've never seen before) she commented on how perfect his teeth were, how beautiful his coat was, and that he is the perfect weight!
Scouters 11-25-2004, 03:37 AM WOW, McBain gets quite the assortment! This morning Scout got very meaty Pork necks. He LOVES LOVES the bones! I have found that I look forward to feeding him now.. Its kind of fun to give him so many meals that he LOVES! His teeth are bright white also and I have people ask me all the time how I keep them so white! I say, BONES! He certainly has never had his teeth cleaned at a vet! I also have people ask me how I keep his coat looking so "WET" HA! Im proud of Scout. I am very fortunate that Scout doesnt seem to have any allergies so far... Knock on wood. He can pretty much eat any kind of meat that I give him and loves sardines and eggs (even the shell) He gets raw chicken livers several times a week and or I will feed hearts and gizzards. I have not bought the tripe yet though. I kind of got a little quezy in the grocery discovering it was a stomach! LOL!! It really was only a white blob though so I may give it a try sooner or later. HA HA! It was on my list for sure. I give scout cooked potatoes as well. I have cut back on fruits as he had a blow out on apples and pumpkin!! Im sure it was one of those days where I gave TOO MUCH because he WANTED IT! You cant do that.. I learned the hard way! :)) I have read that it is very healthy to fast your dog one day a week but I havent been able to do that with Scout. He also gets supplements and I believe in All C and Vitamin E among others.. even for my whole family. Well Happy Thanksgiving Mcbain and Mom.. and thanks for replying to my post. It is fun to share experiences and we can all learn something new.
labracorn 11-25-2004, 04:29 AM Along with all those other good things you are mentioning don't forget fish, our gang gets canned jack mackrel at least once a week, sardines are also yummy just make sure if they are packed in soy that it is rinsed off before feeding.

It's acutally different and much grosser than the tripe at the grocery store! The stuff at the store is cleaned and bleached. This stuff for the dog is full of partially digested vegetable matter and stinks soooooo bad.:D
Yup I do have a hunter in the house, he just got a white tail deer and a bull moose a couple of weeks ago so there's another years meat in the freezer!
Scouters 11-25-2004, 05:56 AM Oh GaaaaRross McBain!!! The stinkier the better huh?! Sounds like a biology project... but Im sure very nutricious!! HURL!!
Me & DH are divers so we stock the freezer with flounder, taug, amber jack, just whatever we can get really... the cats and the dog LOVE IT!
Do you have a website with pictures of your labby? I have a ton but they are all too big to attach here. WHen I get around to figuring out how to resizing them and/or using the pic vault then I will post mine.
by the way, Glad to meet ya!!
McBainandLoki'sMom 11-25-2004, 06:36 AM It's good to meet you too! Sound like there are allot of different kinds of food in virginia than here! I won't be catching any fish now until summer.
I can't talk my cat into eating raw food... stuck in his ways I guess.
So how old is your labby? what color? Do you do any stuff like obedience, bird hunting? What do you do?
Lori
Scouters 11-25-2004, 12:59 PM Hi Lori,
Scout is a black Lab and he is 2 1/2 yrs old. I think I have finally resized a picture that may fit on here. We aren't involved in any kind of organized obedience because we move around too much with the military. I guess I've spent more time getting my two boys settled in sports etc than getting Scout back into activities. We lived in North Carolina for a while and I had Scout into every type of obedience training. He took classes with me at Bon-Clyde learning center, he went to Tarhill K-9 for a few months, he went to a hippy trainer type one on one lady called "The Dog Trainer" for several months, and he went off to Weller Kennels for Inboard training where they actually do hunting trials type training. He was pretty much a handful in the beginning and my first big dog but I was bound and determined to learn what I needed to in order to keep him. I actually rollerblade him at HIS speed anywhere from 2-6 miles a day. It is like water skiing behind him he is soooo fast!! I enjoy it but always wonder if I am going to lose my balance at top speed!! :) It is a bit cold here now for boating but I cant wait to get him back out in the water. Boy does he love to swim!!
Are you and Mcbain into agility, hunting or obedience?
Let me see if I can get a picture on here...

Lena's Dad 11-27-2004, 10:12 AM Lena gets 1 lb of meat a day. Either Venison, chicken frames, green tripe, oxtails or fish. I also give her a veggie mush I make from leftover raw veggies I gring in up in my processor. She gets about 4 oz of this a day. Each meal gets a little flax seed too.
If I can get any bones in addition to the above, I just let her gnaw on them any time of day. Her teeth are so white that she looks like a shark.

I Know, Right!?! Isnt that great!! Bones work like a charm! Funny, the vet that I rarely need to use is completely against the raw diet. I say its a risk no matter what you eat these days...you just have to decide which is the greater risk. :-)
