View Full Version : Some Hypoallergenic Dry Dog Food Options

If anyone is considering a change to a hypoallergenic dog food, here are some of the allergy foods we see people using...

Californa Natural (Lamb & Rice or Chicken & Rice)
http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=cal-home

Natural Balance makes 3 hypoallergenic formulas: Venison & Brown Rice, Potato & Duck, and now Sweet Potato and Fish
http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/allergy/home.html

Wellness makes 2 hypoallergenic formulas: Simple Solutions Duck & Venison

There are others, but if you are looking for a food for a dog who you think might be, or who has been diagnosed with food allergies or sensitivities, your best defense is to learn how to read labels and have an awareness of common allergens (though a dog can be allergic to anything, some things seem to be more common than others). Some common allergens are beef, wheat, soy, dairy products (though yogurt is often tolerated well) and frequently corn. We even see some dogs who can't tolerate chicken or rice which often makes the choice even harder.

You should try to choose a food with one source of protein and one source of carbohydrates. The idea is to try to minimize the number of ingreidents so you can figure out which one doesn't agree with your dog.

If anyone knows of any other foods that fit this category, please add them to this thread!

And of course raw and homemade diets are always excellent options!

ok i take that back about the fish and potato...you are only listing foods that have one carb and one protein source...got ya...although right now i can honestly say that the whitefish and sweet potato diet that Wellness makes has worked WONDERS with emma (+ homemade) but shes been horribly allergy ridden for 5+years and this has taken nearly 3 months of being on this diet...but her fur is growing back between her toes and shes licking at htem less and less :) Just my two cents.

I wonder what's up with my link. I'll check it and see if a mod can edit for me.

I'm happy you put your Whitefish & SP info here, Julie. There should be other options for those who struggle with the single protein/single carb concept.

This link should work. Perhaps labracorn will edit for me? And maybe sticky the thread? :D

I have given my pups CN Lamb & Rice for about a year now and since switching to it, Moonpie has not needed anything else for her sensitive skin. Don't want to gross you out but everyone's poops are firmer and healthier.

:floor You clearly don't spend as much time in here discussing poops as some of us moonpiesdad ;) That's about the most ungraphic, daintiest poop description I've heard in a month :D
