View Full Version : some interesting info about different food.. TigerLily 04-26-2005, 10:36 AM http://www.iei.net/~ebreeden/kibble.html - My Sweet Daisy 04-26-2005, 01:46 PM Wow. Thanks for the info! Black Labbies 04-27-2005, 12:26 AM I like using this link, thanks for posting it :). ZenCat 04-27-2005, 06:34 AM That's a good "diplomatic" sit, TigerLily. Its informative without being terrifying. I think its important to read all the comments below about the various ingredients. This one, for example, has been a concern of mine too: *Corn Gluten Meal AAFCO - Corn Gluten Meal is the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm. Solid Gold states that it is: "Added to pet food to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats (think toxic waste). This holds the waste in. Kidneys and liver work overtime. Dogs may chew their lower backs. Feet may swell, so the dogs lick their feet. Corn is thought to be the #3 common cause of food allergies in dogs. 3dognite 04-27-2005, 09:09 AM Interesting that she had no objections whatsoever to wheat, eh? Keep in mind that this article is dated 3/99 - six years is a long time in the dog food industry! Many of the formulas cited have changed and at least one of the companies is no longer in business. "Toxic waste"? Hmmm. I would take anything Solid Gold says with a huge grain of salt. Remember that this is the company whose owner actually did jail time for making false nutritional claims. Corn gluten meal should be avoided if a dog is senstive to corn, surely, but to assert it is added as a clever means to maximize exposure to toxic wastes...well, that sounds like classic Solid Gold propaganda to me. (Note to those who feed Solid Gold: I have nothing against this food, just the bizarre and intentionally alarming nutritional claims appearing in their ads.) ZenCat 04-27-2005, 03:10 PM Very good rebuttal, 3dognite. I had missed the wheat omission (how could I? wheat is my nemesis!), the age of the article AND forgotten Solid Gold's "shady" history ;) TigerLily 04-27-2005, 05:11 PM oh well i thought it was informative.. Black Labbies 04-28-2005, 12:03 AM You know why I like it?... It has phone numbers right at my finger tips ;), always handy when you want to ask a kibble's manufactures rep questions about why they put this or that in their kibble :brow:. ZenCat 04-28-2005, 06:10 AM It was very informative, Tigerlily!!! But 3dognite is right on target about it being published in 1999. Companies can have changed their forumulas since then. ALWAYS happy to have food info links! |
