View Full Version : how soon can I give my puppy bones?

I have a 15 week old pup -- he stole our next door neighbor's Lab's soup bone and loves it, but most of the marrow was already gone. My neighbor said the marrow might upset our dog's stomach?

How soon can we get him bones from the butcher?

Thank you in advance!

The marrow can upset their stomach a bit. You can always get one and scoop out most of the marrow and slowly let him have more to allow his stomach to get used to it. Be sure you give it raw, cooking it can cause it to splinter.

I regard bones at best as causing excessive wear to teeth. The dog guide school I volunteer for forbids giving any of their dogs any real bones.

So what do they suggest your puppies chew on? Nylabones?

While I am sure this is true for some dogs, some are moderate chewers and don't have a problem. Abbey has been having bones two or three times a week for many years and at fourteen has very good teeth with minimal wear.

Pippa is 13 weeks (I think) and she enjoys Abbey's 'used' bones. They have no marrow to speak of, but still seem of interest.

I have to agree with the excessive wear to teeth... from personal experience. I used to give bones to the GSD's I had years ago and their teeth wore out, especially the front teeth. All dogs I've had after that were not allowed bones and they died with nice white healthy teeth that were all there. I now only give raw hides and compressed raw hides, but only for 20 minutes twice per week. My vet is amazed at how nice my 6 year old dogs teeth are. We both contibute it to the weekly rawhide chew session.

Nylabones are good. Make sure they are too big to get into the back of the mouth. Slick new ones may need roughed up before they will appeal to some dogs. Kongs are a standard. I am selective about using Gumabones. Some puppies chew them up too fast.

For a while I found Rex Bite-a-Bones at big Lots. Cheap, very durable, and the puppies loved them.

Remove anything when outgrown or gnawed down too small.

We have been using Kongs for our Lab puppies and when we are in the room with them I will give them large rawhide retriever rolls this really seems to help with the teething.... neither like Nylabones... I bought some expensive ones and they just sit in the toybox.

Have you tried roughening them up as I have suggested?

Yep the dachshunds rough them up but the labs still show no interest in them ... dachshunds only like them when they are new! lol

Maybe you can rent the Dachshunds out.
