MickeyTheLab22 07-16-2009, 05:58 AM same happened to my mickey when she switched to solid gold but hers got better faster her poopp is soft but not direrrea
mygalsal 07-16-2009, 08:40 AM we have been on CN for 6 weeks now and have the same thing, first poop of the day is firm but from then on its all mush. i am going to the feed store today to check out an alternative formula to the L&R.....also sally is super gassy the past 2 weeks and i think its the food.
Baffle 07-16-2009, 09:41 AM Any chance you're feeding a bit too much? Unless you can readily see his ribs, perhaps try just cutting his food back a bit. If what you're feeding is what the company recommends, it still may be a bit too much based on your dog's metabolism. Practically every dog I've had has needed less food than recommended.
All dogs are different, but I've never had a problem with CalNatL&R.

no, we're feeding a lot less than it recommends. i gues we'll try lowering it even more to 2 cups a day
pingsay 07-16-2009, 10:01 AM bonnie is on purina pro-plan(for puppy) for a week now . before that she was on royal canine. these days she has the same problem , but not diarrhea. the first poo is firm enough but the next ones are shapeless...i have to say i increased her amount to 3.5 cups per day , that could also be the probable reason .... i should try to go back to 2.5 cups per day ....

As long as he's not skinny, that's the first thing I'd try....perhaps just lower to 2 1/4 and see what that does. A little food makes a big difference, poop-wise.
Good luck.

lisam 07-16-2009, 11:32 AM HOLY COW!!!!! you guys are great! I have had this same problem for about a month, (sine I increased her food from 3 to 4 cup daily because she was a bit thin) I have done stool test, and stressing myself, now my vet says change her food..... well I think before I change her food I will decrease it first..... these forums are great for info...!!:smile
LadyBuckeye 07-16-2009, 01:46 PM Pingsay, no need to drop the portions by an entire cup...feeding as much as 1/4 cup too much can cause soft/runny poo. If your dog is thin then just drop 1 meal by 1/4 cup and if that does not correct drop the second meal of the day by 1/4 cup.
Lab4Life 07-18-2009, 02:19 PM My dog had a different issue, it wasn't overfeeding that was the problem with the loose stool, I'm pretty sure it was the brown rice in CN that caused the issue for me. It came out hard then it got real soft, making it yucky to pick up.
It was just a sensitivity I guess to the brown rice.

ImWithThePyr 07-18-2009, 03:35 PM Have you tried giving a spoonful of pumpkin after a meal? Or just mixing it in?
I THINK that the reason Maxwell's new food is working for him is because the fiber content is so high! (7%)

Wellness Ocean Core. (I used to think it caused him to have black stools... then I realized that if I don't pick up his stools, they turn dark.)
ZoeysMommy 07-18-2009, 06:11 PM I am having the same issues with my lab puppy, somewhat solid at first then turns runny, the continues to be runny the rest of the day.
Do labs have sensitive stomachs? more than other breeds? Ive had dogs my entire life, large breeds and small and never came across this poop issue...

I wonder that myself. All three of the labs I've had seem to have somewhat sensitive stomachs.

uplander 07-23-2009, 11:37 PM Because they run around enjoying life.. they get thirsty and drink lots of water... think of what your bowels would look like if you drank that much water...:D
A dogs intestine is around three feet long... a humans is over 20 feet...that is why the Giants of the Pet Food industry spend millions figuring ways to slow down the food passing through ... making a glue like product with little nutritional value... so they can live in your house, sleep on your bed, and make a perfect stool for clean up in the yard...If you could teach your dog to use the toilet the soft stool would be the least of a dog owners worry..:brow:
jasonfin1128 07-24-2009, 12:43 AM It took a little while for Rolph to get used to Cali Natural and now he does fine. His poops were still off and on for the first month. Is there anything else you are feeding as treats or snacks that could be contributing to the inconsistent poops?
ZoeysMommy 07-24-2009, 11:23 PM We have solved the runny poop problem, i gave up on the high quality dog food search, I tried many different brands and none worked for my puppy, it was pure torture for my baby and my wallet was taking a heavy hit as well with trips back and forth to the vet. I spoke to the vet who told me to try her on beneful puppy. I bought a bag and within 2 days she was back to normal. No runny poop, she has her energy back and she loves it.
I am going to keep her on the beneful for a while then when she is older I will switch her to a better dry adult dog food, for now its working and she is finally better and that matters to me more than anything
KCLabLover 07-25-2009, 09:01 AM Glad to hear it's resolved itself!
Leah, wow! 7%!!! I am so happy to hear that Maxwell is back to his old self now.
And yes, 1/4 C can be just the amount it takes to create loose stools. I tried to up her food last night, thinking she wasn't getting enough (see my post on switching to EVO for more). This morning's walk told a whole 'nother story. EWWWWW... Soft and then the runs where prior to upping it 1/4 C she had nice small firm stools. Lesson learned!!
Zoeysmommy, while Beneful might not be the best out there, if it's working for her right now - and nothing else that you've tried did - then you ARE doing what is best for her. Keep it up! Maybe in the future you can try giving your beautiful girl a higher quality food, like you mentioned. Until then, keep doing what works for her so she can thrive! :D
