I really didn't want to start a whole new thread, but...does kibble go stale? I don't have one of those plastic storage things for the food. 18.99 seems WAY to much to pay for one, even if it IS on wheels...but this has been bugging me for some time. The cat food is in a plastic thing, but I don't have anything big enough to put the 50 lb. bag of dog food in, so is it OK to leave it in the corner of the kitchen, open? Bull can't get to it.

Yes, it does go stale. While most dogs don't mind stale food, staleness is indicative of the nutrient quality. If the food is stale, it's likely the vitamins have been oxidized.
We have a deep freezer, so I put about 1/2 of Jes' 40lb bag into smaller 20 gallon Ziplock bags and freeze them. The remainder stays in the bag and is placed into a plastic container. Now you don't have to go through all the trouble of freezing, but at least keep it in the bag and in a sealed container (you don't want to empty the food into a plastic container).

ok, maybe I could get one of those storage bins at walmart and use it to put the bag in! Thanks!

That's what I have...the pet stores will usually sell an overpriced version of what's at Wal-Mart.

In my unwiser days when we were buying Iams and Pedigree..{gasp} They had a special offer..buy the 20 lbs bag and get a storage container free. I use those to store my dogs food and the way we go thru it..it doesn't have time to go stale! LOL
I like the idea of freezing it..you can also buy the large 2 1/2 gallon size bags and freeze those. I store my cats food in a popcorn tin and never had any problems with it. Actually..I only buy the popcorn in the tins at Christmas just for the tins!! I use them to store decorations and toys and you name it!
I know this going to sound silly but..do you have a dairy queen by you? You can buy their large plastic air tight pickle containers for next to nothing..they hold quite a bit of food..they are either 3 or 5 gallon. You'd be surprised what places will sell so they don't have to pay to recycle it or trash it. WAIT!! In Wal Mart in the paint aisle..you can buy brand new 5 gallon paint buckets..they work great for food..they are air tight and have a handle..check there..or Home Depot or even Lowes. We used to those years ago..I totally forgot about it.

What's nice is that they are brand new and never had paint in them so you don't have to worry about paint chemicals getting into the food. We only used paint buckets when we lived in Florida..the ants were horrible and found their way into every other container we tried.

Wow, paint buckets are a great idea! ANd they take up less space. I'll hit up wal mart today. Since I hate going there for only one thing, I'll have to buy some thinks that I don't even need! LOL!!! Actually picture frames! I took a pic of Bull and printed it out off the computer as a 8 by 10 and I bought a $5 frame with a mat and franed it! It looks pretty neat!

Dad of Jes already mentioned it, but make sure you keep the food in its bag inside whatever container you use. Plastic can leach vitamins from the food, particular non-food-grade plastic.
Great creative ideas, you guys!
