I make Maxwell his "ice cream" with Kroger Private Selection organic plain yogurt..

He's been itchy lately and I could not for the life of me figure out why!

I looked at the yogurt and what do ya know... it contains cornstarch. :tapfoot: (Max has a corn allergy)

Why in the world would they include cornstarch in plain yogurt?

ETA: Does anyone know of any other yogurt that has no cornstarch? It doesn't matter to me if it's organic or not.

Not sure, but that is interesting. See if you can find Stonyfield Organic Non-fat Yogurt. It doesn't contain anything but cultured Milk. I just checked my Dannon All Natural too, and it only contains cultured Milk and Pectin. Both are fairly well priced with the Stonyfield being slightly more than the Dannon.

YoBaby yogurt does not have any cornstarch. It's by Stonyfield Farms. It's a little pricy, but it's what I've feed my kids for a long time.

Here's the link with the ingredients:
http://www.stonyfield.com//ourproducts/YoBaby.cfm?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=yo-baby%2Byogurt&utm_campaign=branded

Click on the yogurt type (Plain) and it will pull up the nutrition info.

Hope that helps! I'm pretty sure corn starch is a tool of the devil!!:tapfoot:

Also, check if it's nonfat. On occasion I've seen nonfat yogurt with additives to make it a little thicker---so if that's the case, maybe you can just buy full-fat and solve the problem that way. We buy Trader Joe's organic; it's pretty cheap as those things go.

Dannon fat free plain...it's not organic, but that's the one I use, it only has the milk & the yogurt cultures - nothing else in it...

Um... hang on a minute and sorry if this is a dumb question, but I thought milk was bad for dogs (lactoise intolerance?) I feed Fergus the occasional bit of cheese, but I thought yoghurt would give diarrhoea?

We're talking small amounts of yogurt - like maybe a tablespoon per day or 2 at the most. As far as being lactose intolerant, I know that humans who can't consume milk often handle quality yogurt quite well - something chemically different about it, but can't remember the explanation.

I'm lactose intolerant....I can have yogurt but I'm a pretty mild-moderate case so I don't really know how someone with severe intolerance would fare w/ yogurt. My doctor did say that he suspected I would be ok with yogurt. Oddly enough, I can't tolerate frozen yogurt...like Edy's, etc....makes me sick. Go figure..

I'm lactose intolerant as well, and I can only handle about half a yoghurt cup at a time, and only once every week or two. Which sucks, because I love dairy, but I'm always forgetting to replenish the supply of lactaid in my purse. Two of my dogs, on the other hand, have an actual dairy *allergy* which is different than lactose intolerance, and worse in that they can't have anything that has dairy ingredients no matter how few or benign seeming. And lactaid won't help them. :(

Privae Selection Organic Yogurt appears to have NO live active cultures in it, therefor the only way they can get it to be thick is to add (and all this crap IS in there): locust bean gum, pectin, corn starch. Ick. It's the worst tasting yogurt, too, plus being lactose intolerant, I got really sick from eating this b/c it didn't have the live active cultures in it that digest the lactose sugar... I'd not recommend this to anyone. Or any dog!

Kind of late joining here but thought I'd add my :2cents: I give Palomar Nancy's brand. Its not organic but its with the organic yogurt, and they do make organic, it just a little more expensive. I emailed them and asked for coupons and they sent me 5 .55 cent coupons so he'll be getting the organic for a while anyway. He LOVES the yogurt.
